Half-Life 2 is definitely deserving of the first spot (It's personally my favorite game of all time).

I have yet to find an FPS that has an atmosphere of the level of HL2. The game just sucks you in the universe. The pacing is just perfect with a mix of conversations, gunplay and puzzles. Another thing is how the transitions between levels are so fluid. No **** like in Halo how you finish a level and it seems your teleported to the next one.

Not to mention the graphics still hold a candle to a lot of games out today. Played through the whole series last year for a 3rd time. And the game on max settings still looks very very good in comparison to games today.

There is ALWAYS going to be people who find high rated games overrated. It's normal. People have opinions. To be honest I found Halo CE to be overrated but I can see why it is acclaimed.

Half-Life 2 deserved it. I would have replace SOTC with RE4.

Pretty ridiculous list. I don't really mind HL2 getting the top spot (althought I'd personally place Deus Ex there). Not including Deus Ex at all though just enrages me.

IGN missed a lot of great games, much better than most mentioned: Deus Ex, Diablo II, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, The Witcher, Dragon Age: Origins, Rome: Total War, Freedom Force, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, etc.

It's a good choice, personally i would have put GMod or Metroid prime top, followed by a total war and then HL2, but still, HL2 is awesome, and it spawned GMod, one of the best games ever.

HL is awesome but I can think of a game or 2 maybe 3 even 4 :P that are superior.

I am getting tired of you bashing the PC platform in every thread. Fact is no game in 2004 came close to Half-Life 2 or even today. Name me one game that was as good as HL2 in 2004? Good luck with that.

Yeah I saw it, it really deserves to be up there. But come on, I'm so sick and tired of people overlooking Metroid Prime it's not even funny anymore. There is no other game like it this generation and it was one of the biggest sleeper and underdogs in video game history. Gamingcucumber

That list is terribly flawed. But I like HL2 at the top, although IMO it should have been WoW if only for it's impact on the industry, as well as it being the biggest game ever made.

World of Warcraft should have been number 1 imo or WC3 :P.

i really tried to like half life but it was just boring. the gens are lame the story is meh . gordon freeman is one of the most facels person in gaming

Lack of Metroid Prime is disturbing. Wouldn't be my choices for a top ten, but it's a decent list I guess. Still don't see why they wouldn't list MP and then go on to mention Fallout 3.

Uncharted 2 should not be on that list.

Half-life 2 seems to fit very well. Though no Halo CE makes me upset.

People need to also realize that while Half-life 2 is amazing game with one hell of an engine, it also includes the most competitive FPS ever made, Counter-strike Source.

HL2 is probably the most boring game that I ever forced myself to finish.

One good thing I admire is the efficient programming. That game looked great on the most bargain PC you could find. PC game developers should use that as an example to strive for.
