IGN ranks the Final Fantasy games

I agree with almost everything else. I think Final Fantasy IV should be the second and Final Fantasy VII the third. Final Fantasy X should be the eleventh, just before Final Fantasy XI. The lack of a world map was the stupidest idea ever.

That is the trendy thing to do, but it happens with FFVI too. Also, x Final Fantasy that isn't as "popular" as FFVII.

It's not really amano vs. nomura. It's "new" vs. "classic" and "popular" vs. "unpopular." The same thing happens with the Persona games.

A: Man Persona 3 sure is great!

B: Yeah, way better than FFVII!

A: Man Final Fantasy IX sure is great!

B: Yeah, totally better than FFVII

I agree with VI at #1, but VIII and IX should be #2 and #3 respectfully. VII should be near the bottom of the list, along with X, XI and XII. I, II, III, IV, and V are ones I really don't care much about.

VII, while definitely not my favorite in the series, deserves a Top 3 placement, if only based on the title's significance to the genre. It was alot of RPG fans' first RPG, made Final Fantasy a household name and brought the genre into the mainstream.

I will agree with you, however, that IX should be in the Top 5.

You should really give IV a second chance; it's my 2nd favorite FF right behind VI. Try the DS version, it's fantastic.

My own personal top 5 would be;

IX, VIII,VI,VII, X in that order.

Indeed. FF1 is pretty much unplayable by todays standards.

There are currently thirteen games in the main franchise that all have a completely different cast, tone, world, and even completely different game mechanics. That isn't even counting the multiple spin-off franchises and direct sequels. It's very rare to find someone who likes all twelve, let alone everything with the name Final Fantasy on the box. And it's a given that the truly diehard fans of a particular entry are the most adamant that everything since then has sucked and the franchise is dead.

◦Final Fantasy VIII seems especially prone to this; as the follow-up to one of the most phenomenally successful and popular games ever and containing many storyline and gameplay elements that are controversial in their own right, it's pretty much inevitable.

◦Final Fantasy VII is arguably even more of a case of this than Final Fantasy VIII. The user reviews on Game FA Qs can be mostly summed up as either, "This game is awesome, Jesus H. Christ!" or "This game is overrated trash." In fact, message board threads about Final Fantasy VII have a tendency to draw out the die-hards that swear it is the greatest game ever made and the haters that would rather eat shards of glass than play it.

◦It seems that all Final Fantasy games split the audience in some ways, with the exception of Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VI, which are more unanimously praised, and Final Fantasy II, which is pretty much universally regarded as the worst in the series. For Final Fantasy V, you either love the job system and Gilgamesh, or dislike the characters and its generic villain. For Final Fantasy IX you either love the return to the classic themes or you feel it is too childish (it is the PS FF that sold the least). You either like Final Fantasy X for its love story between Yuna and Tidus and its beautiful environment and soundtrack or you hate it for its confusing story, annoying characters, and poor voice acting. You either like Final Fantasy XII and its ensemble cast and mature themes on war and cooperation or you hate its story and new gameplay system. Even upcoming Final Fantasy XIII seems to split the fanbase.

Why is Tactics not on this list? Tactics is my faviourite of the ones I've played, the only FF game I've played that actually has a good plot.

VIII and X are to high. IX is too low. VI and VII while not my personal favorites, it's good to see VI as 1 and VII as 2. Glad to see Iv get some recognition. And while V could have been better it was much better then VIII.

Just my thoughts.

Switch IX and VIII and perfect list.

I really loved VIII and think it should even be higher. I liked all the characters, the story, the pacing, the graphics, the side quests, etc.

I think it's highly overrated or simply not for everyone. I can see why others may not like it as much for it being so different, but I connected with it.

Heck, I even have the limited posters and action figures.

Its nice to see FF IV place in the top 3 and FF V finish in number 6. Aside from moving IX up, I'm happy with the list and glad that FF V(Probally the most under-rated entry in the series) place so high.

Eh. They went too emo with Squall and everyone else just lacked the feeling that the other games in the series had.

It was okay. It seems like they ditched the "epic" plotlines and went for a love story which IMO didn't work out too well looking at how emo Squall was.

Yeah, this was pretty good. Not to my taste, but very well done.

Again, well done.

battle system.

My biggest gripe. I didn't like the draw system at all TBH and junctioning just felt like a bore to me. I prefer the ****system of IX.

Well, I do think the setting was pretty strong for VIII, probably the best thing going for it, maybe even Top 3 in the series. And the enemies are one of Square's strong points.

The huge gripe I had with the game was the battle system; I'm not the most patient person in the world, so I tend to skip over the long-term game fillers like the chocobo farm from VII, so incorporating something like that (the Draw system) into the battle system, where you have to prolong battles just to get spells almost made the game unplayable for me. I did manage to stick with it until the beginning of Disc 4 but at that point it was such a chore that I just stopped.

Also, playing through a game with a giant **** for a protagonist is not conducive to my enjoyment.

Final Fantasy 10 is better than Final Fantasy 4. I've noticed the biggest three fanboys argue over are 6, 7, and 10, so that comes to personal opinion. My favorite is 10, and I liked the combat much more than the other ones. I don't think there will be a consensus between 6, 7, and 10. Fanboys on all three sides will fight over it and cast Blizzaga on each other.uyiop0t

The combat system in X is by far the best in the series, and one that I wish they'd revisit at some point. FF X, however, is definitely not in the same league as IV overall.

I wonder why they left off Tactics, X-2, and Mystic Quest. If you going to include 11, should probably include those as well.

I strongly think one should of been ranked higher. Not only did it help create the turn based rpg genre, but it was a great game with lots of replay value.

And I could surmise the reason why FF6 fans are so confident in 6 being the greatest is because most of the people that played during the Snes days have probably played most all of the FFs, where most FF7 and beyond fans have not.

why even bother posting then? if you dont want to support your perspective thats fine, but it just means its an entirely worthless perspective. you dont have to support something like 'i like big rigs' with emperical facts but theres certainly no harm in explaining what you see in it. if youre talking about which games in a series are better than each other, like the context of this thread, it only really makes sense to at least explain what you think if somebody is interested. that said the guy actually did support what he was saying well enough in his post so i dunno what the other dude was talking about.

on the other hand, for some reason opinion is apparently sacrosanct around here. its bizarre

Still part of the series on the primary console the series was being released on. CC was on a seperate console, with a seperate focus.

Good list. VI in its rightful spot, FFIV in the top 3 as well. FFX should have been lower, IX could be bumped.

FFVI FFIV FFVII FFT, IXWould have been my top 5. After that doesnt really matter.

I think this list is perfect...

Personally I feel IX needs to be up there more. That was the last great fantasy world of the series. To me, Gaia beats out Spira or VII's the planet. It's too much technology in Final Fantasies these days. They've pretty much jumped from fantasy to sci-fi (Not saying they are bad worlds it's just my preference).
