FFVI had a better story than Chrono Trigger, but th ebattle system for CT is better.[QUOTE="texasgoldrush"]
[QUOTE="Human-after-all"]Only game that exceeds FFVI RPG greatness is Chrono Trigger. hakanakumono
They're pretty close though.
FFVI story wasnt that much better than CT. Multiple endings and time travel made CT uniqueand theatmosphere was better in some placesbut characters werent as good/interesting but CT battle system was leaps and bounds beyond FF.To this dayI tink ifCC could score a 10 on the old system here CT would have been 12. i dont think CC is overrated but it just shows u how awesome CT rly was.

I find cecil, kain, rydiaand rosa far more memorable than mostly any game after it. Other then that gameplay was standard but still good for its time. It also defined the entire series for the most part. Dwarf Cid FTW, Golbez was a decent villain too. Been awhile wasn't Cid a dwarf in it? I forget but there is one he is and it was win.[QUOTE="hakanakumono"]

What? IV is a fantastic game.
For it's time. And every Final Fantasy that came after it was better than it.

I don't think so. Hell I just played the after years (right after replying FF4 again for a brush up) and I had more fun with both than I did with FF12, FF10, FF9, and FF8 when they came out.

Well, that's your experience. I didn't enjoy FFIX, but I think that it was definitely the best one in terms of quality, although ... FFXIII may pass it up (because the gameplay quality is better).
One thing that's interesting is how this list devides fans about where X iteration should be on the list.
Not bad of a list if I say so myself, but there are some disagreement as expected with any lists here. I feel that Final Fantasy VIII should be higher up, as for Final Fantasy VI and IV I wouldn't mind seeing them a little lower on the list. Final Fantasy VII could be number one but two is fine by me, and Final Fantasy X is deserving of this spot.
[QUOTE="uyiop0t"]Final Fantasy 10 is better than Final Fantasy 4. I've noticed the biggest three fanboys argue over are 6, 7, and 10, so that comes to personal opinion. My favorite is 10, and I liked the combat much more than the other ones. I don't think there will be a consensus between 6, 7, and 10. Fanboys on all three sides will fight over it and cast Blizzaga on each other.Human-after-allLOL FFX isnt a candle to IV and should be futher down that list. What was it about FFX that was so bad?
Yes and no. Yes it was the best FF game. No it wasn't the "last" good one.I agree ff6 was the number 1 final fantasy it was the last good one for that matter.

It wasn't that great, for me anyways.[QUOTE="WilliamRLBaker"]Yes and no. Yes it was the best FF game. No it wasn't the "last" good one. This always cracks me up, even if people might hate VII or whatnot, they have to have liked something between 7 and 12 if they liked the old FFs.I agree ff6 was the number 1 final fantasy it was the last good one for that matter.

The DS remake of IV has unfortunately (or fortunately, however you wanna look at it) proven you wrong.

I think his beard can't handle the others...
6 is definitely the best in my book. I just wish that they wouldn't have butchered the dialog on the DS version. The SNES version (3) is much better....superclockedummm...no SNES version was censored....what they did with the attempted suicide scene was atrocious. The original Japanese script is the best.
II basically has a broken leveling system. Not that I cared, I absolutely loved I & II.Switch II and IV (I'll never understand why people don't like the former but love the latter) and IX and X and you'll have my list.
WAIW
I would have put VII at #4 With X and VIII as #2 and #3jg4xchamp
I'm actually surprised with the amount of VIII-love in this thread. You don't see it very often.:P
Whats with the IV hate?
It wasnt the best FF but hell if it was anywhere near the worst.
Shirokishi_
After playing it I have to say, it really was overhyped by the Old School fanboys. Granted, it's not going to be as story driven as the more modern Final Fantasy's, but all the copout deaths really killed it for me. That and I found all the dungeon crawling tiresome.

How has it "proven" me wrong. Gamespot scores? Okay, maybe in terms of gamespot scores. But the gameplay is unbalanced and the story is a joke. I own the DS ver, I was really looking forward to it because I bought into all the hype for the remake.

Yeah, but no one seems to be able to stay dead. Even if they blow themselves up and fall into the underworld ...

Yea, that final dungeon in 4 is indeed long and pretty hard if you're not prepared, but in terms of longevity, 12 sure has that beat, the lighthouse at the end takes several hours to complete.[QUOTE="Shirokishi_"]Cause it's depressing, everyone dies!Whats with the IV hate?

Nope, essentially all but two characters turn out to be okay.
Hmm well I've been a FF fan since Nintendo Power previewed FF1 back in the late 80's and my top 5 looks like this:
5. FFX - absolutely hated this when it came out, but I gave it a chance finally last year and it was way better than I thought, best use of turn-based combat.
4. FF12 - its emphasis on gameplay and a huge world to explore felt like a throwback to the FF1 and I loved that, 115hours of fun I had in Ivalice.
3. FF1 - Ah yes I poured over previews of this game like crazy before it was released, and boy did it deliver when I got my grubby 10 year old hands on it. Respect!
2. FF4 - This game pulled at my pubescent heart strings like few others could. My bro would watch me grind for the imp call for hours in the starter area, we were that obssesed.
1. FF6 - Duh! The most complete FF package to date, nuff' said.

Oh I know, I'm just joking :PWhy is that? Because the "graphics" suck? :/ Did you give the game a fair shake? There's a reason why FF6 is consistently regarded as the best FF.Highly disagree with both IX and VI. IX had so much charm and heart, it's the most underated imo.
On the other hand, VI may have been good at the time but its aged terribly. I played it last summer and couldn't see why I held it in such high regard.

I often wonder what that reason is. FFIV and Chrono Trigger were much better JRPGs from that gen, imo. Plus, FFIX hardly has great graphics by today's standards, yet it might be my favorite game period.
SPOILERS - I found FFVI started pretty strong until Kefka pushed his statues (which I always though was lame) and the World of Ruin started. Sure, it was much more open, but the storytelling really suffered imo. The last 10 hours had no story progressioin, essentially just turning into one large quest to fetch all the different characters.
I also remember at one point in the World of Ruin, Celes' random whim that a bird she saw near the airship would lead us somewhere was actually used to move the plot forward (let's go to that town because Celes thinks the bird travelling there is significant for some reason!). Another part that typifies the storytelling in the World of Ruin was how we randomly found Cyan writing letters to some heartbroken woman for no real reason. These parts just didn't make sense to me.
edit: I also found the esper system do be pretty boring compared to the other FF character development systems.
