IGN's Lair review (4.9) - edited with link.

First, MP3 flops, then Blue Dragon... now it looks like Lair is destined to flop as well.

Looks like fanboys of all colors and creeds lose, except for the hermits.

Metroid Prime 3 only flopped at Gamespot. Avarage score at Game Rankings is 92%, for Lair it's 62%.

In other words Metroid Prime 3 is a good game which Lair (apparently) isn't.

I knew all the time it would get dull after a while, from the moment i saw the first couple gameplay videos, because all the videos showed the same thing. HOWEVER i dont think that a game should be rated so low, because the only thing it does wrong is repetivness and bad targeting? Heck, even ffx was repeative.....Koba123

All games are repetitive to a certain extent. What is important is if it gets old quickly. You can distill any game to a repeated series of inputs. The sticking point is: Are those fun the 100th, 1000th time you do so? It's the 30 seconds of fun theory Bungie applies. According to IGN, the answer to the question is no, it's not fun.

As for bad targeting, that can pretty much break a game. Imagine playing resistance and having your weapon shoot a random enemy on the screen, even if your crosshair was targeting someone's skull. Good luck.

I don't know who said it, but someone said Factor 4.9. I loled.

I said it would get an 8.0, so my guess was pwned. But it's such a cool concept... too bad it's terrible. And I'm glad I decided to wait to buy a PS3 in 2008.

These reviews mean nothing to me... I have no idea why everyone hates motion-control on the ps3 but **** their pants over it on the wii. I love it for both my wii and ps3, for instance reviews thought the sixaxis was "tacked-on" for motorstorm, but for me it made it worth buying for the same reason I will actually buy a new mario kart. I think they are just old dogs who can't learn new tricks, and only support wii-controls becuase they would expose themselves if they critisized it considering its mass appeal, but if the Wii sold like the ps3 has (which isn't bad just not AMAZING) they'd be ****ing all over the controls. And for those of you who really can't adapt to motion-controls in games, give up on consols now... you have no future with them.Galaxybear

it was very much both games. and nobody is saying the visuals aren't stunning (when not choppy), right? no reason to knock the games visuals just because the gameplay sucks and swallows.

Apparently the framerate is really bad though, and it's not that easy to just gaze at the scenery because stuff is usually happening, not to mention the controls are difficult. But that's just from what I've read.

Lair does look good in pictures, but if it has issues in motion, visual quality in still pics doesn't amount to much.

What's funny is that when Gamespot comes out with its Lair review and likely low score, a flop thread about it will probably be made by Casey and stickied. Poor cows won't hear the end of a flop of this magnitude for a while. Maybe Casey will take pity on them and consider this the official flop thread. Or maybe not.

ou know why I enjoy this? Because just a couple of days ago cows slapped around Metroid Prime 3 saying that it's a massive flop and that all the Nintendo fans should stop trying. Even before that they bashed one of my favorite games yet BioShock for being a flop.

Now one of the biggest PS3 scores and flops even worse than Killzone did...and strangely I approve.

Can't stand the cows.

Doing a quick search on GameBrink I came up with 54 separate posts containing screens or video of Lair in action. Looking at all this media I can't help but wonder how it all went so horribly wrong. I mean there have even been positive impressions at several game conferences for this beast and yet the final release is one of the largest steaming piles I've ever had to endure. After failing many of the missions an insane amount of times I headed to the bathroom for some relief only to realize that my latest bowel movement was more fun than the "game" I had been playing. I don't think that's ever happened to me before. I guess there's a first time for everything unfortunately.

Yes I know they're good at making trailers.

Insanely huge mistake number 1 is all sixaxis control all the time. Tilting does not work at all and requires you to make giant circles to turn around. This means that anything on the ground that you miss the first time will require you to fly way the hell out of your way to turn around and try the approach again. And forget about gesturing for actions as it rarely works right.

Number 2 is that the game tries to do most of the targeting for you. This would be fine if it worked but alas it doesn't. There are many times where you'll need to lock on to a certain target in a confined area only to have the computer lock on to something you're not facing screwing you over completely. And whoopdeedoo at the time limits that completely hose you and make you restart the levels more often than you'd like to. Didn't we get rid of these stupid time limits ages ago?

And shocking mistake number 3 is the framerate. Running in 1080p you'll have several situations where the game chugs like no other. Massive amounts of enemies will make the game a slideshow and will ultimately lead to you breaking something. Protip: clear out the valuables before you play Lair.

Unfortunately the dragon fights are the worst.

Ok now here's the one no one will believe until they play the game themselves. The graphics aren't that great. I don't know how they pulled off screens and videos that make this game look amazing all the time but it's just not all that. Sure at times it can look amazing but too often enemies look low resolution and the drab brownish color that the entire game exudes makes what you're looking at blend into one indistinguishable pile of pixels.

Ok now for the few minor pluses. The cinematics are incredibly gorgeous. They're really the only thing that kept me going. That and the story that unfolds in movie like fashion was great. Maybe they should repackage Lair as a straight to Blu-Ray epic CG movie?
