I don't know you guys but open world and sandbox games completely wore me off this year. They're too unfocused and they have an overwhelming things to do.

I mean... When they're like Horizon Zero Dawn, where you have the whole world but NOT SO MUCH side quests, it's fine, but when you have something like assassin's Creed origins or Just Cause with obligatory side quests (since you have to level grind or to liberate some settlements) to progress with the game, said game start feeling like chores.

As of now, I'm completely getting away from open world games, I'm not going to play Zelda BoTW because of this.

Anyone else tired of these Kinds of games?

I am a side questing fool. I always make it a point to try to hit the side quests before finishing the game. That is where you get your moneys worth from a game. Playing through Shadow of War right now. While not your typical side quest I make sure to kill or turn every enemy captain on the map and find all collectibles before I even try to take over the castle. Just how I've always been.

@heathen75: I wish I was this kind of gamer but o always get bored with the side quests and I tend never to do them one after the other, I usually complete them alternating between them and the main missions but ultimately, the games start to feel repetitive and I simply rush to finish them.

1. cut scenes

2. icons all over the world helping you autoplay the game

3. no crafting

4. no building

5.no farming

6. easy

7. story gets in the way.

8. no first person mode

at least from what I have seen

something like Space Engineers is RADICALLY different

Shame. Personally find BOTW to be ingenious. Interesting art design, catchy yet familiar music, ambiguous sense of direction within the game i.e. "results may vary". It's a game you can get pretty creative in.

To each his own.

I guess with what I was saying earlier it depends on ones definition of 'Open World' vs 'Sandbox' which for me is a gray area.

yeah I do as well for the most part.

For me personally its not an open world or a sandbox if it doesnt even have crafting (and much perfer also has building) in it.

So that min bar is different for different people I suppose.

Horizon is actually the worst kind of open world game. Game felt like a glorified tech demo. If you're going to make an open world at least give me something to do in it.

@NathanDrakeSwag: I like HZD because it didn't overwhelm me with stuff to do, unlike AC ORIGINS that had way too much content and lots of it were repetitive, HZD didn't have this problem.

I don't know if Zelda has this problem with repetitive content

The problem with a lot of content, at least to me, is that the game gets too unfocused and I just don't like it.

To each his own, I guess. I'm still enjoying a lot of open world games. I just alternate what I play. After a huge open-world game I'll normally play something more conventional before I play another one. Just beat Ni No Kuni 2 then Ni No Kuni 1 now it's some Witcher 3 and some Chrono Trigger while I wait for The Shenmue Collection then Dragon Quest XI

To me a perfect example of an 'open world game' would be Empyrion - Galactic Survival.

sure there are plenty of other examples that are more or less 'open' but I think that is a good benchmark.

Simple, don't do fetch quest unless it's very mandatory lol. Fetch quests doesn't rub the wrong way as other gamers here do.

I haven't played HZD yet but Zelda is probably not as cohesive, if that's what your looking for. For Zelda, content wise you can expect spending alot of time just figuring out all of the game's mechanics, and applying it to dungeons and general puzzle/problem solving.

I don't like the single-player campaign in most open-world games. However, I love the free-explore aspect once I'm done with the storyline.

I spent more hours free-roaming Fallout 4 than the storyline which I finished in 374 hours. The bad guys respawn regularly which keep me occupied.

I like the Reset Outpost mode of Far Cry 3 and 4. Just drop into the game world and cause mayhem. They have respawning enemies near enemy outposts. There are also locations that continuously respawn bad guys if you know where to look. Far Cry 5 is somewhat of a letdown because the Reset Outpost mode is gone. There is Outpost Master. But, there aren't many enemies patrolling around. I hope Ubisoft fixes that because Hope County is now my favorite game world. It would have been perfect for Reset Outpost.

I also play Call of Chernobyl (mod for STALKER: Call of Pripyat) in pure free-explore mode. No story. Just a pure daily grind (like real-world living). Start out with a so-so weapon, some ammo, some cash. The rest is up to the player.

I used to have GTA V installed. But, its game world is kind of boring after I finished the singleplayer campaign.

I'm burned out on 3rd-person games which is why I also uninstalled The Witcher 3. Once I get over the slump, I'll resume playing the latter.

Sounds like you're sick of Ubisoft's style of open world games.

And yes, having played BotW for about 20 hours, I would totally include it in that category.

Nintendo Ubified Zelda. It sucks.

that was your hint to say 'oh yeah well I have played open world games that have crafting, building, farming and homesteading and I feel that they are .....'

instead of just stating the obvious which of COURSE an open world without crafting, building, farming and homesteading is going to be low on content

@recloud If you grew out of open-world games, what are other types of games that you want to try out?
