The developer's senior community manager James Stevenson tells Videogamer that it was the long-running fan reaction to Resistance 2 that weighed heavily on the team. Stevenson laments that "the overall opinion of it is that it was a failure by fans, that Resistance 2 was a failure, because maybe the expectations were so high for it."

Stevenson bemoaned that negative fan feedback to Resistance 2's design choices was "like your dog turned on you."

Didn't care much for the SP, but loved the co-op and MP.

I've yet to play Resistance 2, for some reason none of my PS3 owning friends picked it up. I played the first one with my roomate in college a bit, thought it was a cool concept. what was supposedly so bad about the second outing? was it a gameplay thing or was it like the Gears 2 backlash were people just moaned about the plot?

They should bury the franchise, or make the third one the last.

Yep Mehsistance 2 was a pretty run of the mill shooter, with very few remarkable features imo.

Insomniac will have to try harder with number 3 for it to even be considered alongside greats such as the Halo and GeoW series.

Thank god, they really need to pick up the slack for the 3rd game

While i did enjoy R2, they took the series a whole step backwards from the first game. No co-op on the campaign? A boring, generic story? Nothing in R2 really set it apart from the billion other sci-fi shooters out there. lets get something fresh this time around, eh insomniac?

Haha. You're comment reminds me of Joe Dirt:

*******************************

"There's a snail in the desert?"

"Yea 'cuz the alien space ship dropped him off. "

"And he can talk?"

"Yea, because they gave him magical powers–Dude, you're focusing on the wrong part of the story!"

*********************

Seriously though, the point of the comment wasn't to be derogatory.

I wouldn't call R2 a failure, its a good stepping stone to R3. Insomniac will become the first dev to create 3 exclusive PS3 games, they have to pull something out big in R3.

I liked R2 a lot, and the critics liked it, but I do feel like the competition improved from R1 to R2, and the fans didn't love R2 as much. Still, the 8 Player Co Op was bad arse, and the MP was fun. I had a blast with the SP, even though the ending was a bit sad.

That's interesting. I really enjoyed all the aspects of Resistance 2. About the only way they could have made the experience better was adding coop to the main campaign instead of just doing select missions. It was still great fun though... really need to return to it.

But if they took it hard and believe what some of the fans say, that is was a failure, well I can't wait to see what they pull out with Resistance 3. :)

They only failed by totally ruining the SP narrative and story telling style. They nailed the MP though, among the best I played on consoles last year.

It was awesome, much better than RFOM but XBOX fanboys talked bad about it all the time because of Gears 2 and the stupid PS3 fans believed them. I feel very bad for Insomniac , such a great developer.

I liked the first better. Something related to gameplay makes the two of them feel different. I remember playing through RFoM. I was almost addicted and wanted to know more about the story. On the other hand, I've been unable to finish R2 because it doesn't have the same feel as the first one. Its still good but not as good as the first one, IMO.

Yeah they need to listen to the real fans not the lemmings who bought a ps3 to play one game...lol.. seriously the game was fantastic, it was the first ps3 game that I actually beat , and did it without switching to another game...usually i will play a game get about half way through and something new will come out and I play that. R2 came out when a whole bunch of other top notch games came outa and I couldn't put r2 down. It was way better than r1. People just didn't like the lack of weapon wheel, but they are fine with it in halo? Double standards if you ask me. I loved r2, it also came out when cod5, and a few months before kz2... that was their only bad decision, they really had no choice though, MGS4 came out in the summer and kz2 in the spring....

I thought R2 was a pretty good game. The reason I don't play the MP is not Insomniac's fault. It that I couldn't stand the community on there

Bring back the weapon wheel. Bring back the life bar. Get rid of orange hue and bring back old color scheme. Also bring back the difficulty.

Thats a shame, ive seemed to notice an even amount of people hating it and liking it. Some hated the SP but love MP, some were the other way around. I guess its just an inbetween kind of game. Some people are just too fussy though, wish they didnt listen to them.

That's a little better. But, when A Crack in Time comes out, it'll be the third in the Ratchet & Clank Future series. Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty(if you count that, which I do), and A Crack in Time. But I understand what you're getting at.

I agree with everything except for the difficulty. Thought R2 was plenty difficult. Also bring back the narrator.

I think the majority of the negative response comes from the fact that R2 was so different from not only the prequel, but most shooters out there as well. I personally wasn't too welcoming of the style at first, but eventually it just got to me. But I'm sure insomniac is now gonna ditch it and make something that sticks more to the norm if they do make an R3.

Um... A game should not be a stepping stone, that's practically the definition of a rehash. Anyway, Resistance 2 was disappointing for me, in pretty much every area. Still a solid AA game, but I was expecting much more.

I think it was a design problem, they only cared about more bigger, that was it. Things need to make sense in a video game, it isn't simply about making things bigger for the sake of it.

Hopefully this motivates them to do better.

I'm assuming the complaints center around regerative health and SP issues like that as the MP did offer a lot (though I was not really fond of it)

The two big Sony developers have traditionally been great. But Resistance series just does nothing at all for me. I finished the first one, but I just cant take any more first person shooters. Not to mention Naughty Dogs Uncharted series has just taken a whole cinematic leap that Insomniac really didnt do with Resistance. Theres just nothing about the series that stands out.

Oh and Uncharted 2 rock the hisouseeeee. I just wish it was a little harder.

^THIS^ A lot of the backlash Insomniac is receiving is due to the SP. Anybody who has played both knows how much better the story was in R1, in R2 you had no connection or investment to the story. I don't know to many people who love to read pages of intel to understand a story? I think one of R2's biggest flaws was it became too CODish. If Insomniac can take the parts of 1 and 2 that were great and build upon them R3 will be an amazing game.

Wow nice dev. I like it that they dont equal huge profits from random people cuz of nice boxart and hype to sucess :D

This is how devs should be. Fans are the people that should guide them, not money....

Good work Insomniac

Those are the strong points of the game. I would go as far as saying R2 is the premiere FPS co-op experience.

Im on my first playthrough on Hard. Havent really run into any situations that were hard yet. I like that they added some platform elements to the shooting parts though. But the graphics. My god. Incredible. I want a bigger tv now. 42" isnt big enough anymore.

Fans make no sense. R2 was an improvement over Fall of Man in every conceivable way, apart from the lack of campaign co-op. FAR superior guns (the augur actually works!), prettier visuals, an insane conclusion, some cool boss fights and a unique co-op mode really made it superior to the original. In my opinion.

I'm glad. The single player was one of my biggest disappointments. Fall of Man was sooo much better.

SOME SPOILERS!!!!

Resistance lost its identity with R2. Resistance felt like its own world and everything, but R2 kinda threw that all away to follow popular trend, and it received quite the backlash from fans because of it. The atmosphere, the enemies, and everything, all felt much more oppressive in Fall of Man.

R2's story was mediocre, characters were mediocre, loss of weapon wheel sucked, boss fights were extremely underwhelming... especially after Insomniac's hype for 'em, and environments just weren't as good or cool. I still remember playing the snow level in Fall of Man for the first time.

The bosses were very typical and standard, even though Ted Price and crew hyped them up as otherwise. Hey, here's a rocket launcher laying on the ground in front of you. Hey, there's a boss walking under a bridge-like structure. Hmm, I wonder what I should do? And if I don't, what will happen? Very predictable and average. Then you have the other that crawled around the top of the building. Then the one where you're standing on the platform in the water and using the rocket launcher. Etc. Then the last floating squid-like main villain was a joke of a boss. The outcome was pretty awesome, because you go FORCE POWAZ! But yeah, the bosses were lame.

I loved Resistance 2. One of the better stories in a FPS that i've seen in awhile. Multiplayer and coop are excellent as well.

the multiplayer is awsome if you like either playing class based co-op or just large competative battles, but the single player just didnt do it for me, and i didnt even finish R1, they didnt flesh out the charaters at all, nor did it extend the story a whole lot by the end... just a string of reasons why you go from one place to the next fighting chimera, but atleast the multiplayer extended it legs alot
