lol as per usual so much Apple hate on these boards. navstar29

It's a gaming forum with most of its users that know one or two things about computers. What did you expect.

That's cool Apple's not targeting most of the people here. I disagree with most of the sentiments of the TC. But at the end of the day iPad is a device for media consumption, and surprisingly, in some aspects it does that better than a computer does. It does a lot of other things worse than a computer. But it's not meant to replace one (regardless of what some fanatics believe).

And Apple's design philosophy about user experience and lack of tech specs, although likely annoying for most people on this board, who love to be able to customize everything, is something that is clearly embraced by a large majority of people who find technology a barrier to their every day life. (Again likely not anyone here, but for those who don't want to bother with the innards of their PC or worry about optimizing their system, it's a fairly good option for them).

At the end of the day Apple made the iPad to be a portable device that wouldn't replace your computer or your phone, a niche which many thought didn't exist at the time, and I'm still not convinced it's required either, even after their resounding success. But clearly this area is growing and Apple was smart to capitalize.

Is the iPad meant to replace a DS as a portable gaming device ... No! But to say it doesn't have games is a mistake, it has plenty of great games and more developers are starting to make full fledged games for it. But if someone wanted something to do beyond gaming alone, where something like the DS shines, its an option for them. Its been useful in certain areas where I was surprised nothing like this already existed, like in medicine; in hospitals, doctors offices and pharmacies. I can even see it being useful for certain aspects of my job. But I'm not planning to get one any time soon.

Why is it that everyone that claims "not to be a fanatic" apple fan, writes 3 pages long comments. Base line to your book you just wrote: "apple makes cool shiny trendy electronics, that neither have the technological power or FUNCTIONALITY to attract actual technology users." So yes, you are right. Apple makes cool hardware, I like their quality and design.. everything but the specs, and the OBSESSIVE control they(apple) have over everything you do with your(really their) piece of hardware. Did you know that even news article apps have to agree to be edited under the license agreement with apple? Try to watch the G4 PODCASTS that dont speak highly of apple products, oh wait you can't you will only receive a "this file can not be viewed on this device".

lol this thread reminds me of a debate we're having at my school

Our school is planning to distribute iPad 2s to all the students because it's cheaper than giving everyone a laptop, which we have done in the past. But right now there's a huge arguement going on about which device is more efficient for school work, the laptop usually wins. But the teachers are pretending that they're still deciding whether or not to implement the iPads, but the word is that we already ordered them. I'm getting mine soon, can't wait :P

[QUOTE="Gta3-fan334"] I think tablets overall are stupid. They are just oversized smart phones. :|

Rikusaki

Using Android 3.0 on a smartphone would be a user experience nightmare.

I get that 3.0 is designed specifically for the larger screen of a tablet, but capability wise Tablets are pretty much like smart phones.

Again its not about specs. Apple has optimized their OS for their hardware, obviously because they only have one or two devices to worry about it works so well. But the iPad blows away most comparable tablets in terms of speed. The issue that arises with Android is fragmentation, which thankfully Google is starting to take more seriously now (at least thats what the recent rumours say), which should finally put more pressure on Apple to do something different with iOS for a change.

At the end of the day I still prefer jailbroken iOS to Android. But they both work well. navstar29

Just because the OS runs smoother doesn't mean it performs better.

  • iOS uses hardware acceleration for the scrolling and window animations. Android 2.3 only accelerates some aspects of the UI.
  • iOS also has restrictive multitasking while Andorid has multitasking enabled at the kernel level.
  • Android apps, the interface and API run on Java in a JVM with layering. iOS does not.
  • Google is also working with ARM to standardize the CPU architecture so they can fully optimize the OS without comprimize (you know, like Intel and AMD CPUs in your PC).

Android is a much more heavy-duty OS while iOS is watered down to ensure a smooth, fluid experience.

I understand that. That is beside the point. Fact is, Android 3.0 was built for tablets from the ground up, iOS wasn't.

Also, you are very, very wrong about Honeycomb being a user experience nightmare.

Here are a few reviews of what I call the first true tablet OS:

Although it's not true multi-tasking I've never had a problem or situation where I wanted something working in the background but it wouldn't work, regardless i'll take the considerably better battery life as a result of that over multi-tasking at the kernal level.

Call iOS watered down, but the fluid experience goes a long way to its usability and ease. And with jailbreaking there isn't exactly anything I'm unable to do on my phone that I've come across yet.

Just stating the facts. I have no problem with you choosing iOS over Android.

Personally, I'd rather have an open-platform that allows me to customize the functionality of my device. Can't do that on iOS. :)

Gladly.

Windows 7:

Android:

In Windows, you can right-click a file and select a program to open it with. The same can be done in Android.

With iOS you can simply use a different app instead of the stock app, but Android lets you make the 3rd-party app the "default action" for the requested activity.

For example, the launcher itself can be replaced.

What you see below is Launcher Pro. My favorite launcher by far. It expands the functionality of my device.

Another example is messging.

Now my messaging app is fully customizable from head to toe.

sorry, but all those games are NOTHING new, and can be bought on any ipod touch or iphone. And no, I don't think it's funny you made this thread as troll bait. Really, the "..(i) regret wasting my money all these years on consoles and other portables... i love my ipad2".. that was a BIT over the top.. remember when troll baiting, same rule applies to life "if it seems to be to good to be true, it usually is"... even trolls can spot fake enthusiasmdRuGGeRnaUt
Umm NO, there are IPAD specific games and they can't be played on IPHONE or IPOD, so you are wrong you can't play all games that are on IPAD on an IPHONE or IPOD.

And what does that have to do with anything? :?

Ever hear of the Xerox Star Information System?

It was the first computer to use icons, folders, windows, mouse pointers, bitmapped display, ethernet networking, file servers, print servers and e-mail.

Not Apple,

Xerox.

Xerox isn't getting the credit they deserve. They were the true pioneers. Everyone believes Apple was the first to bring a window-based UI. Wrong. It was Xerox.

And it happened all over again with the iPhone and iPad.

LG Prada + Microsoft Surface > iPhone > Android

Tablet PC + iPhone > iPad > Android

I guess that's what Apple is good for: Making unpopular ideas popular. It's just too bad that they have to lock it down and keep it to themselves... :?

as far as im concerned there are a few categories of portable. there is 1. things that can go on your finger. 2. Things that can go in your pocket. 3. Things you can put in a bag. (laptops/ipads) 4. things you can set up on a desk. AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED laptops and ipads are the same as portable.

It's fun but it provides a few brief minutes of entertainment. Good games on the 3DS or NGP will provide hours of varied entertainment, my iPhone serves me well for about 5 minutes at a time. The best game I have on there is Street Fighter IV which I got for a buck, and it's not even comparable to the 3DS version.

The whole point was that tablets are more portable than laptops... that was all that was being argued. If you truly believed that, then you wouldn't have argued at all.leadernator

Nope. I argued because you made it seem like laptops are so big and bulky and compared to them tablets are sooo portable. I disagreed with that and made my opinion (that the difference isn't big) clear.

You saying they are in the same category when it comes to PORTABILITY... think about it man, what on earth is there to interpret? There's no other way around it, and you're simply trying to weasel your way out of an argument that you clearly lost.leadernator

Nope. You just got owned. You thought I said something and you were proved wrong. So now you're trying to twist my words. But all you've achieved is looking like somebody who doesn't understand the word "Category"

Clearly, you have a blind hate... and I'm just pointing that out

leadernator

Nope. I'm objective. You're the one blinded by love to a piece of metal with fruit logo. You love it so much you can't even think straight whenever somebody posts anything besides absolute praise to your object of worship

Apple fans are funny, though it's kind of sad to see them get abused so much by Apple.

Must be fun to spend that much money for shallow, short experiences. At least Infinitey Blade is good, but it's not something I'd buy hardware for. You're better off using an iPad for some computing ... though limited.

Why not just buy a netbook that does basically everything and more, its also cheaper and has a physical keyboard, not a shoddy touch screen one...

Yes Xerox invented the graphic user interface or G.U.I., but Xerox corporate had no interest in it, so, they willingly sold it to Apple, and Apple redesigned it and created there O.S. From it.

MIcrosoft, however stole it from Apple and turned it upside down and called it Windows, then they beat Apple to the mass market by 6 months and succeeded in stealing one of the biggest fortunes in history. Microsoft didn't even invent D.O.S.

They bought it from a guy in new Mexico for $50,000 and licensed it to IBM, until they stole Apples O.S. That is.

Microsoft has never created anything they just stole, bought, and copied from others, and every time Apple reinvents an O.S. or hardware Microsoft or PC manufacturers try and copy them, because like it or not Apple is the only true innovators.

Like it all not Apple steals most of their "innovations" too. The only difference is that MS gets bashed for that, while Apple gets a pass.

Also...MS has been coming up with lots of fresh ideas recently. Implementing them properly is a whole different matter though.

LOL oh really like what, between Apple's software and hardware of O.S.-X, I.O.S.-4.3 , IMAC, MAC Mini, Macbook Air, IPOD, IPHONE, IPAD. The only thing that Microsoft can say is that there most recent edition of Windows is there closest thing yet to copying O.S.-X, while all the PC manufactures strive to copy Apple hardware from computers to tablets and MP3 players and cell phones. If you have a list or even one innovation from Microsoft i would love to hear it.

Windows 7 is copying OSX? That's complete BS. All hardware manufacturers copying apple's hardware? There are companies that are trying to so they can soak up some of Apple's revenue, but there are plenty of alternatives out there with pay no mind to Apple's technology. You just have to actually look for them instead of spouting off this nonsense.

Nothing innovative about either of those really.

And fresh (not really innovative, but fresh is propably good description) ideas from MS? Take a look at that's Microsoft Research does, like their surface projects. MS's fatal flaw is that fail to bring those solutions to mass products time after time.

The only thing that managed to come out was Windows Phone, which is the first fresh mobile UI design since 90s. But even that is still unfinished.

Also...lol about "all pc manufacturer" trying to copu Apple. Sure, there are some. But there are also plenty of companies who follow their own path instead of copying Apple, which is a smart thing to do, because you can't be more Apple than Apple itself, so why even try? Better to find your own way.

I don't recall EVER seeing people lined up for over a month in a row outside retail stores like Target, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart, for Laptops, or any other Tablet for that matter, but here we are nearly a month later, and the mere whisper that any of those stores or the Apple stores are getting in some IPAD 2's and people are lined up hours before opening to try and get there hands on one. Umm nope don't recall any PC device like a computer, tablet or otherwise getting that kind of attention...

Slimmin360

It's called marketing, and Apple are masters at it. That's why people line up for hours to buy an overpriced tablet computer when they could take their pick of superior products for less money just a few shelves over.

Microsoft has never created anything they just stole, bought, and copied from others, and every time Apple reinvents an O.S. or hardware Microsoft or PC manufacturers try and copy them, because like it or not Apple is the only true innovators.

Slimmin360

Your iPhone and iPad wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for Microsoft Surface.

Also, there's this:

Meet the LG Prada. The world's first capacitive touchscreen smartphone.

Microsoft Windows.

They made an OS and opened it up to the world. Runs on billions and billions of hardware configurations flawlessly.

If it weren't for open-platforms, we wouldnt have competition between hardware manufaturers (Intel, AMD, ATI, Nvidia...).

That's one hell of an innovation if you ask me. ;)

Eh, I wouldn't say flawlessly, but they've defintely cornered the world-wide OS market. Now whether they did it through innovation or by brute force is another matter.

When it comes to Apple, their true innovation is marketing. They take existing technology, add a little marketing magic, and you suddenly have people lining up by the hundreds to buy one. It's really quite an amazing spectacle.

[QUOTE="leadernator"]

ARE YOU KIDDING.

You can rest the tablet on one of your arms, while using your other hand/arm for the touch functions... You know, how people manage to write on clip note pads while standing up WITH EASE. AdrianWerner

Ermm..tell me..how is that not using two arms? You don't make any sense.

A laptop requires you to fold out a keyboard... and seriously nobody types with one hand. The laptop needs a LAP or a DESK to be comfortable.

I don't understand why you are fighting this... really.

leadernator

Tablet also needs lap or desk to be comfortable for anything besides the shortest periods of time. That's the problem...when you stand up...phone is far superior, when you sit down, laptop is far superior. My problem with iPad is that it doesn't excell at anything.

I have a high poewered desktop for Art work, and a tablet to replace the laptop. The tablet does a few things that make it automatically better than my old laptop: no need for a mouse (I know laptops have the nub, but after using touchscreen tech I cant go back. Even my desktop is using a 21 inch Wacom cintiq monitor that you draw on. I don't have much use for a mouse at all.) The Ipad allows me to quickly navigate any interface. The keyboard can be operated with one hand easily, if you can type a text message on an iphone with the tiny buttons, then the Ipad is cake. So everything that I use my entertainment center PC for, I can use my Ipad. I'm not trying to play the lates PC games at maxed settings, just watch movies, listen to tunes, and surf the net, Ipad has it covered, it even connects to the TV. My work PC is irreplaceable though.

Yeah, I guess you're right. If it wasn't for Apple, the term "closed-platform" probably wouldn't exist.

[QUOTE="navstar29"]Could you elaborate on customizing the functionality of the device?Rikusaki

Gladly.

Windows 7:

Fair enough, I agree that Apple has way too much of a hold on the iPhone and the OS. Thankfully jailbreaking and the resulting community exist, to make applications like BiteSMS, iFile, SBSettings, LockInfo and allow proper theming etc.

As a result, i also have the ability to choose default applications to open certain files, customize my messaging app head to toe, although, I like the minimal look, so other than a couple of things, it remains untouched.

But here's my lockscreen and homescreen (I honestly couldn't live without jailbreaking):

... and yes I realize I'm very very late at cancelling my bell internet ....

Again though I assume that it probably would have been a lot easier to do what i did to my phone on an Android. But when it comes to using the OS and the integration with all of the other programs I use in my life, I still prefer iOS, maybe I'm just a sucker for all those silly animations :P .

It's not about chaging the way it looks. Opening files in different apps is nothing special either.

It's about expanding upon the way your phone functions.

And since this is a standard feature in Android, we have tons of alternatives available made by thousands of talented developers.

The entire launcher itself can be replaced. And let's not forget about widgets.

Windows Phone 7 or Android?

You don't need to hack your phone to accomplish this. Simply download Launcher7 from the Android Marketplace.

Want to stick with your current launcher? There's a widget that accomplishes the same thing:

Not as much as you might think. That was the point of Iwata's GDC keynote speech. By selling games for so cheap, app developers are lowering the expectations of consumers and significantly reducing the profit margain of gaming software. Less profit means less money to develop a game which means lower quality games. Yes, Angry Birds has been a huge success, but look at its low production values and simplistic gameplay (never mind that it's essentially a 2D ripoff of Boom Blox). That's the kind of game that can make a profit at a few bucks per sale because it costs so little to produce. Now ask yourself, do you really want every game to start looking like Angry Birds?

Nintendo isn't worried about losing to the competition, they're worried about the value of gaming software plummeting to the point that it will become increasingly difficult for high quality games to turn a profit.

Yes I understand that, there are some other way more crazier "hacks" which alter the functionality of the phone. But again its not really much of an issue for me, I guess what I'm trying to say is that both communities have a large developer backing behind them, so it's really just whatever floats your boat. I'm not trying to say iOS is better than Android. What I'm saying is iOS is better than Android for ME. I don't mind the closed eco-system of apple, so long as i have the ability to open it up a bit via jailbreaking.

And in reference to some of the people mentioning iOS games being great for when you have a minute here or there. I completely agree that that's what 99.99% of the games are good for. But right now my current addiction is Final Fantasy 3 on the iPhone, really well made for the touch screen, have actually spent hours playing it continuously, something that hasn't really happened on the phone before, so I guess GG Square.
