lol @ touchscreen gaming
LOL at tablets for gaming. When games AAA make their way to mobile and we get some decent controller options then I will take them seriously.
@22Toothpicks:
Your saying you'd rather spend $65 on games you can get for $6 or less on the App Store and get the same experience ? I would rather pluck out my nose hairs with a dull tweeser than waste that much money on a console game,when I can get the same experience for little or no money out of pocket.
@Slimmin360: The same experience? **** you talkin'bout? I'm willing to pay more for a much better product. Besides I mainly game on PC so game prices are a non issue but if I were stuck with consoles I would still be willing to pay more.
The usual short sightedness in the majority of replies.
All tablets need is the ability to either plug in directly into a TV or even stream to a TV, that over comes the small screen. Add a controller and there go the touch screen controls and they will be completely viable home gaming devices in their own right. Tablets will surpass the power of static consoles, that's inevitable given a home console's static hardware nature, opposed to the annual increase in power of the tablets. They'll never catch up on PC's as all the cutting edge home hardware are designed for PC first and then gradually shrunk to fit other devices over the course of years. That in no way means that tablets won't also replace many home PC's for gaming as well but their power will never be on par.
They will eventually replace all home consoles or the home consoles will evolve and become tablets, maybe not this year or next but certainly by 2020 we'll see them becoming the average families choice for home gaming. If the tablet manufacturer's decide to go down that route.
I play a few Ipad games to waste time, but none of them compare to the console experience in quality of games nor the functionality. Ipad games can litteally be 10X better than console as far as output of graphics, but people will still prefer the console/pc experience.
It's laws of physics, they can't have similar powerfull hardware in a tablet as you can in a console or PC. Which means the games has to be scaled down, not only in graphics, but also in physics, audio, and gameplay. It ends up as completely different games. Yes, the Ipad Pro has a theoretical processing power of around 1.2 Tflops, which is close to the X1. But the architecture is different with more bottlenecks, and all the games would still have to be made to work on the slowest available product, which is slower than last gen consoles. Or will you have to buy the newest Apple product to be able to play the latest games? Because paying over a 1000$ each time they release a new product will be expensive.
And what kind of low quality games would we have if the expected price for the game to sell would be 2$.
Granted most die hard console or PC fanboys detest this topic but it is more and more apparent.
I've played games on my IPAD Pro that are very close in graphical performance as my PS4 or my son's Xbone.
Now although the touch screen control scheme is not the preferred controls of most gamers, they do have dual analog controllers that work with tablets, and I'll admit the sheer size of game selections in the App Store, be it for free or between $1.99 to $9.99 is mind blowing.
So I ask myself, why make return trips to the game store and toil through the shelves trying to decide which PS4 game to buy costing between $19.99 to $59.99, when I can get a nearly identical fun gaming experience for either free or a fraction of the cost ?
I couldn't really justify it, especially when there hasn't been much to choose from lately in the console section, once again I'm left waiting for upcoming console releases......whereas I just peruse the App Store and get instant satisfaction.
Well I know most PC or console boys will dismiss this as a non viable topic or utter waste of time but I always weigh pros and cons and nowadays the tablet gaming world is more graphically impressive and always more affordable.
Tablet Graphical advances search YouTube for these titles:
Afterpulse ( Call of Duty clone )
Orc Vengeance ( Diablo 3 clone )
These are not new titles but they do run at 60fps and 1080p.....and impressed the heck out of me.
Overpriced Apple device. Check.
Dat horrid Tablet touch interface, lol. Check.
Tiny Tablet Screen size. Check.

A lot of solid choices!
Maybe we drop the "i" and just call them Phonies. They are phony gamers, and/or they are telePhonie gamers, lol.
It definitely works for SW as the fanboy names are not supposed to be complimentary to a brand.:P

From http://www.futuremark.com/hardware/mobile/Apple+iPad+Pro/review
Apple's iPad Pro scored 33,560 points in Ice Storm Unlimited (Average score or Overall).
That's along way from Radeon HD R7-260 class GPU...
Apple is using TSMC's 20 nm process technology.
Intel is using it's 14 nm FinFET process technology.
AMD is using Global Foundry's 28 nm process technology. AMD plans to move towards Samsung's 14 nm FinFET process technology sometime this year.
For web forum with proper cited source references, I still use Windows tablet instead of my Ipad Mini.
@ronvalencia: How does the surface book's 71k compare to a modern console equivalent?
For PS4, have you looked for Radeon HD 7850 scores?
@kuu2:
LOL, the IPAD a toy ? I guess you forgot the fact that not only was the IPAD the very first tablet in existence and also that the App Store has billion of apps and games, which far exceeds the amount of choices offered on the crap STEAM service.
@Martin_G_N:
The install base of IPADS.is in the billions since it's original model was released, so if devs could get $2 a pop for the game, then your damn right they would put in the time and effort it would take to make it a high quality title..
@clyde46:
So buy a controller that's made for the tablets and that will solve your touch screen control issues, next fold your iPad cover into a stand and prop it up on a table, and there you have it, your playing games exactly how you would on your console.
So I magically get surround sound on my table? My iPad also grows to the size of my TV?

That's not true.... Microsoft invented the tablet in 2000. In 2002, they even ran Windows XP, not some gimped POS operating system.
Microsoft just didn't capitalize on the idea/was ahead of the times.

@Slimmin360: How do you expect Devs to make quality current gen titles on hardware weaker than the Wii? If the Ipad pro struggles, don'the expect previous Ipads to be able to.
I have an Iphone6S plus if I ever feel the need to play PS2 ports. Also bought a laptop tablet hybrid almost 3 years ago that still has better specs than most surface pro models released today. Neither even come close to matching PS4 quality. Swing and a miss TC.
lol do you guys not realize that the Surface Pro is just a glorlified Windows laptop that has access to the entire Steam library of PC games and whatever PC based emulators you can get. You can attatch a keyboard, use a stylus, plug in a mouse, use your fingers/touchscreen (which is better than a controller for strategy games), plug in a controller. You can feed the display onto a TV if you want or if you're really desperate for portability, stream from a nearby Gaming PC.
Been using my Surface Pro to play games on it for awhile now. It's surprisingly capable even if the thing runs hot (which isnt an issue for the surface since it has a built in stand). Although I dont think it matches the PS4 or XB1's graphical capabilities right now, it's definitely set up to surpass them with the way portable technology has been progressing compared to the lengthy and fixed console generation cycle. As of now, my surface is capable of playing Cities: Skylines, Rocket League, Civ 5, Pillars of Eternity, Endless Legend and DotA 2 quite well when it comes to 3D games. And I've been using it mostly for indie games, which works wonderfully.

I think people are mocking him for his persistent praising of iPad/iOS gaming, not full-fledged Windows (non RT) based tablet gaming. After all, he's even turned against himself and has started mocking Surface tablets as well. You're right about everything else.
But iPads specifically are weak in the gaming department due to the AppStore being full of mostly knockoffs of better games on better systems with better hardware for less/same amount of money and using iPads as a dedicated gaming platform just doesn't make much sense at this point in time.

I thought it be cool for company like GOG to set up tablet interface for old game, so you could use Windows tablet to play game like Sim City, and LucasFilm adventures with full touch control. No need for mouse or keyboard.
Some Valid points , I tried gaming on a tablet and could not stand it. Now many tablets can be connected to an HDTV, and you can use a console controller, but the problem with that is most games are not designed with that setup in mind. They are mostly designed to be played on the touch screen, for quick play sessions. This is my experience anyways, to each his own but it is something I have thought about and quickly dismissed.
I guess you can play regular games on them, like Steam games and such, but again you are using a device not really designed for that(and probably paying extra), for the same money you could probably make yourself a much more powerful PC for gaming purposes, or buy a console with multiple other games.
@The_Stand_In:
Wrong Apple invented the very first tablet back in 1990 called the Newton, IPAD was just the perfected 21st century incarnation.
@kuu2:
Really how exactly does your Surface runs circles around any IPAD?, right off the bat it"s got the infamous buggy O.S. of Windows, and even STEAM does not have the amount of games offered on the App Store.
My IPAD PRO-can do anything your Surface can do and do it better....watch any and all versus videos on YouTube comparing Surface Pro 4 and IPAD PRO, I'm sure the majority winner will be IPAD because of it's vast apps, solid build quality and flawless O.S.
I like how people say things like "My iPad can do this" or "My PS4 can do this." People really do identify with their toys at an obsessive level. It's strange but entertaining. Being offended when someone says Apple sucks is strange to me. I'm an iPhone guy and own an older iPad. I switched over to the darkside for a couple of years with the Note 3 but am glad I switched back to Apple with the iPhone 6s. I can talk pros and cons all day but would never get offended by people hating Apple products. Apple fanboys are some of the worst.

I don't think that's even true
Newton was a PDA,launched in 1993. Wasn't really a tablet.
Actually the first PDA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psion_Organiser

run games from steam?
@lostrib:
The fact that the IPAD can"t run or be affiliated with that crappy service known as STEAM , is in my opinion the biggest selling point of the IPAD.....I HATE STEAM.
@The_Stand_In:

Then google the apple Newton and look at it yourself.
and it says that the newton released in 1993 and not that it was the very first tablet.

Then you have a very limited definition of "anything" and what is crappy about Steam and why do you hate it? Why would it be a positive to not be able to do something?

"iDiots, iPhonies, iRobots, iBots, iSlaves, Appleheads and iSnobs".
IMO. These are the best ones. Lol.

So now you are openly contradicting yourself?
I guess you forgot the fact that not only was the IPAD the very first tablet in existence...
So now a PDA is a tablet? No. It's not. Quit moving the goal posts. The Newton was closer to an old Blackberry (also a PDA) or a Kindle (non Fire) than a tablet.
Does this look like a freaking tablet to you?
No. It looks like a damn Telxon. Look that up. I dare you.
You are completely delusional....

It's a shame that our friend @musicalmac doesn't get
@The_Stand_In:
The word or definition of an electronic device called a " tablet '" did not yet exist, just like a PC was called a computer first, and a MAC was called an Apple computer first , PDA's were tablets in their infancy....and the Apple Newton was one of the first.

keep those goal posts moving
@lostrib:
I had very bad experiences with STEAM, and their lack of customer service made it even worse....So hypothetically even if I preferred PC's to MACs which I don't, but if I did, the mere fact that the STEAM service is needed to play most PC games would be enough to keep me from ever buying a PC.
