lol no. It revolutionized nothing and will no way in hell pass the test of time.

Renegade_Fury

actually the mod community might make sure that the game looks good later on... if they're willing to improve character models, rather than just make new ones.

Yeah, that's nice, but I have always viewed mods as an option, and I don't give the credit of whatever they do towards the devlopers. My post was referring to gameplay though, and if you have to use mods to improve that, then might as well not even consider it the same game anymore.

gameplay is pretty barebones as it is lol :P

Yeah I'd say so. I mean, let's be real here: Yes, most NPCs only ever really say one line. Yes, dungeons are incredibly predictable. Yes, there's issues with reanimated corpses, missing items, arrows protruding from your character, poor pathfinding, getting stuck, etc. Yes, it spawned that awful "arrow to the knee" meme. And yet despite all of that, I can't tear myself away from that universe. The combat is fun, the exploration is fun, the looting and upgrading is fun. Even with all the technical limitations, I find the game extremely immersive. And at the end of the day, isn't that what the purest essence of gaming is all about? Immersing yourself in another world? Skyrim gets it done.

I personally preferred The Witcher 2, but hey, to each his/her own, lol. ;P

On the other hand, while it may not be one of the best games ever made, it should at least be known as one of the most praised/acclaimed games ever made, at most. I mean, the former is far more opinion-based, anyhow, so...

FFXIII-2 pulled me in like no game this year so by what your saying its the best game ever made

ChubbyGuy40

What other games have actually released this year?

Soul Calibur 5 and Resident Evil: Revelations (In EU, USA next week.)

Woah didn't even know SCV was reviwed :o

Damn 7.5? Gamespot was not lying when they said they were going to be a lot more harsh on games this year!

Maybe I'll win my bet now

Skyrim is a great game, but it's not one of the best ever made. In fact, I feel it's more a product of it's time than a standalone accomplishment. There are better games in the series. Were Morrowind made with the technology we have now, and specifically using the same engine used to build Skyrim, it would have been several magnitudes ahead of Skyrim in every aspect.

Even as it stands, I still like Morrowind better, awkward combat and all.

No.

Simply put, no.

Because no, that's why.

It is waaaaaay too shallow to rank amongst the best games ever. There isn't a single aspect that is developed with some depth. The player character development is shallow (saying "shallow" is a compliment in this case by the way), the characters are monodimensional, the faction quests are ridiculously short, most of the combat is monotone, the world interaction is much less than what you'd expect it to be.

It gives you a lot to do thanks to the HUGE world...that's pretty much it. And the shouting, that's an interesting concept.

i got beat over the head with that "arrow to the knee" meme and was finally glad people got over it, but today when i was playing skyrim some homeless guy was talking to me and then he said something about how he wish he could be out there fighting but years ago he "took a sword to the chest" hahaha i couldnt stop laughing when i heard that, maybe sword to the chest guy should tell all the whiterun guards to suck it up

Elder Scrolls 6 will surpass it.

There's no reason it won't considering Skyrim is average on everything.

So, what game in this genre is better? Risen, Witcher, Arcania, Divine Divinty?

It's good and does alot of things right but I wouldn't put it in that league. It does not do anything drasticly new and different and redefine RPG's.

Wasn't even the best RPG of the year. The Witcher 2 was way better. And so was Deus EX honesty. Skyrim is sooo overrated. It's like an ocean 3 inches deep.

Wtf? Why?

Because most people are weak minded and are easily blinded by cutting edge technology, to the point that it makes them overlook some blatantly obvious gameplay issues and game design flaws, that will only become apparent to them over time when they aren't caught up in the hype.

That's why there's a big difference between absolute timeless classics, games like Doom 1/2/Ultimate (despite the tech), Yoshi's Island, GoldenEye (despite the tech), A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Super Street Fighter II Turbo...and something that's just technically impressive for it's time like Tomb Raider was imo for example (it was all just tech and boobs) and I would argue Skyrim is too (it's all about the big scale and scope and that's about it).

Let's see how much people love going back and playing this game in 10 years time and then we can decide how truly great it actually is...

No. What it is, is a technical achievement for gaming, a Concorde moment if you will. There is no game out there with Skyrim's sheer scale, breadth of content, there is no game which is as large, has as much attention to detail, looks that good, is as varied, has as many dungeons, forts, buildings, quests, NPC's, simply as much in the game as it as Skyrim, and likely no game will for quite some time, it's startlingly expansive, like nothing ever. Whilst being the greatest technical achievement gaming has seen, it is not the greatest game ever. What Skyrim lacks is what would make it a fantastic 'game' - the combat amounts to little more than 'wave pointy thing at man', the story is weak and very anticlimactic, the voice acting is generally just alright, the writing is just 'alright', the side quests are repetitive and rather dull, as are the majority of the dungeons, the lacks in the quality by which we judge other games. That's not to say it isn't good, I've thoroughly enjoyed the 100 hours or so I spent with it before leaving it alone to clear my backlog for a while, it's fantastic, it just isn't a very good 'game'.

Skyrim is subpar in almost every aspect. It is big, moddable, sounds great (which is a given, Jeremy Soule composed the music) and it feels epic. However, various elements detract from one another, the game is very repetitive and has no depth or challenge.

Ok, I can also mention Skyrim does thieving better than 95%+ of all RPGs. It is worth noting that Skyrim understands that thieves/rogues arent warriors with an invisibility spell. Too bad stealing is pointless because it is so darn easy to make money anyway.

World of Warcraft **** on Skyrim so hard in terms of scale, size, content, and depth, Skyrim is like an ocean 3 inches deep. And I rather play an RPG that's actually good at what it does like The Witcher 2.

In my opinion, yes. It's not often I've seen such a well-crafted open world game. It has its weaknesses but it makes up for it with a lot of cool stuff. I personally still prefer Oblivion in terms of the overall feel it had, but Skyrim is admittedly better in nearly every area.

But maybe I can just appreciate recent ES games because I don't really give a crap about the RPG elements.

Maybe you are playing it on the wrong platform

Personaly, it´s the most entertaining singleplayer game i played this gen. My biggest complain is the dificulty. It´s too easy, even on master dificulty level, dragon encounters should be more rare, gold, magic stuff like artifacts, armors, etc should be harder to find and, of course, some minor bugs.

Its not a master of any one element, infact kinda mediocre in some. Still the best game of 2011, probably. I wouldn't say best GAME EVER though, not even close baby.
