Serious question. Are you guys content with your current gen purchases so far? Outside of handhelds, this generation of systems have been a major let down. All of them, for various reasons.

I was just wondering if you guys thought differently? If not, what games have made it worth your while?

I'm having an alright time. Got too much stuff to play though, but honestly, this shouldn't be a complaint.

That's kinda what I think too, "having an alright time" but last gen I was having a great time. Don't know if it's just me being jaded, or is this gen off to a slower start?

@Bigboi500: Dunno. Maybe you're just getting older, been in this hobby for too long. That kind of stuff. It's not weird to feel like this. Hell, just being on message boards can really influence your view on things.

Since I play 90% of games on PC and only play exclusives on consoles, yes it is a bust as there have not been many good exclusives. If I was a console only gamer, I would also consider it a bust because most games run like shit. Thankfully, I don't have that problem on PC. :)

Nothing that made me go mental and run out and buy a console on day one. An effect previous gens had on me.

But hardcore fanboys tell me this generation is awesome because there is so much to look forward to.

Ok, but just on the PC side of things, are you having an absolute blast right now with current PC games? If so, what are they and what makes them spectacular?

I'm just asking because I'm curious about how others, from all kinds of gamers, are seeing things these days.

I have seen this sentiment in many forums so obviously a lot of people are disgruntled for various reasons. I personally have owned consoles dating back to NES. I was a bit later on this gen and got a PS4 during the Black Friday sales last year with Uncharted bundle. So far I have purchased:

Mad Max / Dark Souls 2 / MKX / Witcher 3 / Dragon Age: Inquisition / Bloodborne / Diablo 3 (Indies I didnt get via Steam previously: Don't Starve, Transistor, Rebel Galaxy, RCR, Crypt of the Necrodancer)

Overall I am enjoying the console. I like the improvements from last Gen albeit the consoles are underpowered. Things like ease of jumping back to the home screen, and jumping into other games quickly is nice and the PS4 is whisper quiet. I haven't even touched Blooodborne or Witcher 3 yet and I feel like I never have enough time to get to all my games with other things in my life. For me, the graphics in the games I have played are crisp and framerates seem solid. I like the controller and PSN has been stable for me and I get fast downloads for games.

I would have gone with a gaming PC if not for the weak Cad dollar and expense of putting together a beefy rig. However, in 25 years of gaming I am not disappointed in this gen's offering of titles or the console itself. I am also certain I would be enjoying the Xbox One if I had chosen that console instead. To me if I am having fun with the games available to me on my console I am happy. I dont see anything this gen that indicates there is a lack of quality games to play and it looks like 2016 should be a good year regardless of your current gen console.

What, in your opinion, is so great about PS4 and its games? I have both systems too and a XB1, and have had only one or two really good times: Witcher 3 on PS4 and Ori and the Blind Forest on XB1. On WIi U I've played a few more great games than that, but not enough to compare to last generation of great times on those systems.

Street fighter V starts this gen for me just like Demon's Souls (took til 2009) started last gen for me...from there on out it looks great.

In retrospect all the people who were hyping The Witcher 3, Fallout 4, and Batman must have realized all their games weren't that great. lol you guys must not have as good of eyes for great games as you thought.

Mine are spot on however and trust me when I say SFV is going to be the start of what makes this gen truly great and it's only going to get better from there on out.

The gen didn't really get into full swing until last november-ish. That is bad, but the last gen started slow too imo. Not this slow, but within a couple of years the game libraries on these newer consoles are going to be impressive. The games are coming faster, and there are fewer cross-gen games

On WIi U I've played a few more great games than that, but not enough to compare to last generation of great times on those systems.

Mad Max - I think the graphics are beautiful, I really enjoy the car combat although it can get repetitive (you can aim this complaint at a lot of games).

Diablo 3 - Fantastic on console after my disappointment with the original D3 release on PC (pre expansion and during AH fiasco). My brother and I co-op this one online.

Mortal Kombat X - was a huge fan of MK as a kid, haven't played since MK3. I love the graphics, combat, etc... its a fun game to pay - DLC Kombat pack prices are crap (boo dlc).

Indies - I love that Ps4 has a huge list of Indie titles. I could get them from Steam, but I like to have some so that If I am jumping from one of my bigger titles I can play one as a break

I am excited at some point to start Dark souls 2, Witcher 3 and Bloodborne! So far I cant say compared to last gen with my 360 and PS3 (man, I have nothing to play, I dont like the performance of this console, why did I buy this... etc... ). Perhaps if I had a friend with a beefy gaming rig and I was watching him play games at 60 FPS and then had to go home and play at 30 FPS I may change my tune in terms of performance but I dont have that reference point :)

The consoles are leaving a bit to be desired, but on PC and especially with indies I'm having a blast. I haven't been happier to see the rise of some long lost genres coming back (isometric, turn-based strategy, and space sims, for three examples).

Right now I am playing Rise of the Tomb Raider. It is a great game. I recently played TR 2013 again too. I recently finished Batman: Arkham Knight, and Mad Max. I really enjoyed Ori and the Blind Forest, The Witcher 3, SOMA. There are plenty of shooters and racing games that I like to play: BF4, Insurgency, R6: Siege, Americas Army, Assetto Corsa, Project Cars, Dirt Rally. Some of the bigger titles that I still need to play through are MGS V: Phantom Pain, Dragon Age Inquisition, Shadow of Mordor, Fallout 4. There are many other games on my backlog or that I am interested in. My biggest problem is finding time to play everything that I want.

I would say, yes for me that is. I got my PS4 at at launch, been enjoying it for awhile now with great games to play with and my friends online to boot. Got a Wii U back in May 2014, been enjoying it but lack of 3rd party games is disappointing but unforgettable. Got Xbox One when MS was offering $50 off back in 2014, got the CoD: Advanced Warfare 1TB model cause it was a good deal for $350. Been enjoying a few exclusive games, freebies are a hit or miss for both PS4/Xbox One.

In short, this gen wasn't a bust for me, no complaints and just like last-gen, it was alright, so I ain't mad at all this gen. It ain't the best nor the worst, it's alright for me that is.

This is the generation that introduced games like Destiny to me, a game with over 50 days of gametime spent on it, a game that introduced me great players and clan members, this is the generation that introduced games like infamous second son and tales of zesteriria, etc

list is too big to talk about but im in-love with this generation of gaming

if this generation is too boring to you might try to exit gaming for few years

As some1 who plays mostly on PC, exclusives on consoles: Yes it has been, Wii U been ok, haven't bothered getting xbone yet because there's nothing on it, ps4 has Bloodborne and I've maybe played it for um 100+ smt hours but that's it.

But this year should be big, planning on picking xbone when Quantum Break hits, ps4 getting great games like Uncharted 4, Last Horizon etc

Honestly I've had a blast this gen on PC and I still have a bunch of the bigger AAA's to play (witcher 3 first and foremost), time has been my biggest issue. There has been so many varied and engrossing experiences.

I think on the console side a whole lot was promised and very little has been delivered. 1 or 2 decent games I can't play on PC a year and honestly none of those have grabbed my interest at all. Bleach.

(EDIT and XCOM2 should be playable tonight! Booyah!)

Nope. As a Wii U/PC owner I've been delighted with this generation. Mainly on the Wii U side, admittedly. On PC there has been a couple good games, but no amazing games. But with Wii U I've been blown away by the quality games on this machine. Xenoblade owns my soul right now. I'm thinking that Nintendo got it right with Wii U, and that the twins got it wrong. A bunch of random crap and mediocre exclusives don't mean anything to me. But the quality on Wii U has been top notch.

I don't think that would fix anything. It's just that I have more fun playing older gen games and not much new has really impressed me. I think I'll work on the ole backlog and replay some favorites instead of not gaming for years.

That is more of an issue with games becoming formulaic. Publishers are not willing to take big risks. So, we are seeing more of the same. Some sequels even become worse. I am not too worried right now as I still have plenty of quality titles to play in my backlog. We can wait it out until we start seeing some more innovative AAA titles.

I am completely thrilled and excited about this gen. I've been gaming since the late 70's. There has never been a time when I didn't go back and play old games. It doesn't mean the current gen is bad if you do that.

I was not quick to adopt this gen. I bought a PS4 when the Witcher 3 came out. The game is fantastic and the best fantasy open world game I've ever played. People bitched about it complaining about all kinds of tiny details and missing the forest for the trees.

Then I bought MGSV and was truly, totally blown away! That game is absolutely incredible! The most amazing gameplay, it's like a miracle to me. People whined about the story. The story? Seriously? This is what you play games for? You need to get into movies. Those are stories. Video games are for fun. And this story was stupid and funny just like the others. Taking it serious seems impossible to me but people manage to do it.

Then it was Fallout 4. This game had a lot of glitches but they really weren't very detracting from the over all experience. This game was so fun. I loved the atmosphere, it was quirky, it really did a lot of impressive things. Settlement building was awesome! Sure it could always be better but I appreciated what I got. I had a blast with it. People whined and whined.

I think there are two possibilities here. The forums on the internet such as this one are so incredibly negative it can really skew your perspective. There is so much nonsense out there you do really need to keep your head and not be influenced by it. Also it could be your age. When I hit my late twenties I had a lot going on in life and a lot less interest in games. I have absolutely no idea how old you are so this is just a shot in the dark.

I'm someone who has only owned a 3Ds and Wii U for the majority of this gen (only just got an Xbone around Christmas time, which I have been enjoying), and I've been very satisfied and have spent plenty of time playing games these past five-ish years.

Makes me question how people who have owned more system than I have for most of this gen, or own systems that are allegedly supposed to have such bigger and better libraries than the Wii U, are having more trouble finding fun games to play than I am...

If it wasn't for the Wii U, I'd say it has been a bust so far. I've got a lot of games to play, but only a few titles have caught my attention and have been amazing. And fewer feel like completely fresh experiences.

I'm having fun with plenty of games but it could certainly be better.

Seems like the majority of people complaining about this gen being a "bust" are these dudes who blew 3-4K on a nerdrig and got stuck playing X360 ports.

Me? I just went ahead and bought the gen 8 console leader PS4 for a fraction of the price. I'm playing Bloodborn while Neckbeards are walking around a fucking hanger in Star Citizen hoping that shit doesn't crash. Lol!

How is that 30fps with the added bonus of dips and frame pacing issues? I will tell you... it is terrible. How do I know? because I also have a PS4 with Bloodborne. It is a shame that game was wasted on a console with shit performance.

Super Metroid will occasionally slow to a crawl. Like a few frames per second kind of crawl. It's also the best game ever made. My biggest pet peeve? Obsession with performance. Yeah it's sorta important but doesn't actually rate that high.

Serious question. Are you guys content with your current gen purchases so far? Outside of handhelds, this generation of systems have been a major let down. All of them, for various reasons.

I was just wondering if you guys thought differently? If not, what games have made it worth your while?

This generation has some great games out and better coming. I dont get what else you would want ... More options than ever in many genres.

My biggest pet peeve is the poor performance or broken games. To me, it is very distracting if a game is not technically sound. I don't want to be constantly pulled out of the experience because of poor performance or bugs. Good solid performance should be the standard. It shouldn't even be an issue that is brought up. It should just be at a certain level.

More games that innovate. More games that are unique and fresh, while at the same time being large and deep. I'm not seeing much of that this gen.

The Witcher 3 for a deep, well made game. Splatoon for being original, creative and innovative. Rocket League for the same reasons as Splatoon. Ori and the Blind Forest for top notch level design and knife-edge sharp gameplay mechanics.

Four non-handheld games that have impressed me this generation, and we're how many years in so far? I just want more of it, and at a faster rate.
