Is this the worst year in gaming so far?

"Bad years" are a concept unique to console gamers.

I often wonder if these PS4 fans realize that it's a problem with their system, and not actually something that affects the rest of the gaming industry.

It seems they think that since a Playstation system had a bad year, that means all other systems must have had worse years... You know, since Playstation is teh best.

Why do people act as if Sunset Overdrive never happened?

And hell no this isn't the worst year ever in gaming. Actually for year 2 of consoles it has been damn good.

Then you take PC into account.

Not a great year, but once again saved at the 11th hour thanks to mordor, wagon age, talos principle. Couple of other decent games, I guess.

Not everybody cares about or likes Sunset Overdrive.

Sunset Overdrive was shite. Year wasn't that bad at all though. And in 2012 you forgot about Far Cry 3, which was pretty awesome.

It was really articulate with examples (pros and cons) but I don't want to type it again.

tl;dr:

2014 sucked for me and I own all the machines. There was some good games, yes, but not enough to save the year. It's all subjective based on what you play though. I don't like racers and I like fighters.Some people like racers or RTS. Others like MMOs and Mobas. It all depends. A lot of HD ports of games I played yesteryear mixed with some games I liked (Bayonetta 2, Super Smash Bros, Shovel, Infamous 3, etc) but none of these games corrected the disappointment of the year for me.

A lot of buggy 2014 released games (two buggy Assassin's Creed games released in one year, Halo Master Chief Collection, Sonic Boom, Alien, Drive Club, and many more). Many gaming websites and even Gamespot.com chose multiplats for the GOTYs on many of these machines, that's certainly not good imo.

It doesn't help that it's still 2014 so some people are going to defend the year because they are still immersed with 2014 titles they paid money for...they haven't traded them in yet or realized what the year was just yet. They may not have actually played that many games this year or maybe they did and enjoyed the games. Experience also plays a role too. Older gamers may have more expectations that teenage/20 somethings. There has never been a year in SW where it was declared a great gaming year and everyone agreed. Same with poor years. There will always be holdouts on what is considered a poor and good gaming year. In a few years, there will be a far more obvious answer. Years after the bad year or good year? A few holdouts convert.

I remember debates in SW about 1998, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2007 being great years. I'm no stranger to these discussions.

All gaming years are technically good in the sense that some good games release in those years, but it's by comparison that we rank the year and that's where 2014 falls short for the majority of users that don't dig the year. This generation is so new and people are excited with their new machines, it's going to take awhile for all that excited energy to wear off and be more objective...or they really loved the year.

That's true... That doesn't mean it didn't happen. A lot of people haven't played it either?

Dude doesn't even mention one of the best racers to release in years in FH2.

Just because you dismiss something. Does not mean it didn't happen. That's what I call selective memory. You don't make a list of the worst years in gaming ever, then omit 2 of the best games to come out this year.

Bayonetta 2 is one of the greatest games ever. That does not mean everybody has to acknowledge that either.

I got Super Smash, Stick of Truth, Mario Kart, Walking Dead Season 2 and Godyonetta 2...it was a damn good year.

Dark Souls 2 was great...being a 7th gen peasant for much of the year was an eye opener though. As a recent PS4 owner I'm backlogged as **** and 2015 shall only improve.

I've purchased less games this year than other years by a large margin, though I'll be getting a chunk of the ones I've missed this Christmas.

What I've played though has made it a memorable year. Good enough to say it's not the worst year? I'm not sure. I haven't really kept track of how much I enjoy each year as its happening; I've usually been able to find something to play which keeps it exciting.

Overall, I enjoyed it. By no means the best, but pretty solid.

2014 sucked. The PS4 has nothing on it, the X1 only has one game. AAA games suck. 2014 was a bust.

A year of disappointments.

Had a busier last few months than summer that's for sure. I've actually accrued a bit of a back log. I don't measure it in best or worst year, there is always enough for me.
