This year blew away 2013 like it was not even there.
You're kidding right? There's not a single game from 2014 that even touches GTA V, The Last of Us or Bioshock Infinite. Anyone one of those 3 could have swept every 2014 GOTY like it was nothing.

Logic = Meltdown
Feel free to omit games from your list too. Make a thread with your list. I'll be good.
I'll be quiet I promise. :p
You can stop derailing the thread, bro.
The OP derailed the thread. How am I not on topic? Explain please.. I need to hear this.
Attacking users and disruptive posting.
Attacking users and disruptive posting, something you've been warned about before.
Show me where I attacked a user.... that didn't attack me first. I think I showed restraint. Then some Nintendo homer comes in to try to discredit my post. Then calls me crazy, a loon... That was the derail. Then @lostrib saying I'm having a meltdown. That's another derail.
Now who actually is derailing the thread?
That OP list is garbage. I said why it was garbage. I never derailed shit.
Notice its the people who game primarily on a PS4 who keep making these threads?
2014 has been a great year for me.
I don't have a PS4, the only gaming system I own right now is a PC.
There goes that theory..
If alm you do is play on next gen consoles, sure.
PC:
Divinity Original Sin
Ethan Carter
The Talos Princinciple
Legend of Grimrock 2 (i should play that)
etc
Wii U:
Bayonetta 2
Super Smash Bros
Mario Kart 8
Donkey Kong TF
etc
Multiplats:
Dark Souls 2
Far Cry 4
Shovel Knight
South Park TSoT
Wolfenstein TNO
Transistor
Titanfall
Metal Gear Solid V GZ (short has ****, but for the right price, the gameplay is awesome)
Games that i haven't played but want to, and got good reviews:
Forza Horizon 2
Dragon Age Inquisition
etc
So, no
Well I don't play on next gen consoles, I play on PC (since half this thread is telling me I'm supposed to enjoy this year if I had a PC.. so wrong)
and your list mainly consists of shovelware,
but I have all the proof in the world that 2014 was a garbage year for gaming:
Shadow of Mordor is Gamespot's GOTY.
'boom.
There are indeed some good games there (as every single year since 1974 has) but where are the GOTY worthy games? Where are the classics that I'll remember in two decades time?
@Mozelleple112: Shovelware? Please.
And who give s ahit about GOTY? I've been saying for ages it's a terrible metric. If you wanna play it like that, Bayonetta 2 was the first 10 on GS in 5 years. So is it now the best year in 5?
Personally I can't complain. At all
There are indeed some good games there (as every single year since 1974 has) but where are the GOTY worthy games? Where are the classics that I'll remember in two decades time?
huh?
Bayonetta 2 is arguably the epitome of character action games and absolutely GOTY worthy.
As are some others on that list
Can you understand thinking this if you were a PC gamer since the 1980s? Because this is the worst so far, and it's only been getting worse and worse for the past decade. Sorry if you're new to gaming, you might not understand my perspective. But I'm sure you can trust me that gaming today isn't even a shadow of what it was in the 90s.
If you really gamed that long, how the hell can you fail to mention the constant reference to the bundled manual for a code to input whenever starting the game. If you lose the manual, you're screwed. Or, having to use a bulky codewheel.
Then there's copy-protected floppy disks, a myriad of graphics standards (EGA, CGA, Tandy Graphics, VGA), manual sound card setup (if you have one) with each game, IRQ hell, enough expanded memory.....multiple config.sys and autoexec.bat set ups.
Plus...... there was the move from MS-DOS to Windows 9x (the single worst period for PC gaming), fledgling (and sometimes conflicting) 3D-acceleration, even more IRQ hell.
And still more.....
The move from AT to ATX was a whole can of worms by itself.
oh lord, so now moderators doing there job is derailing.
that is some cranler level thinking. good stuff
Stay on topic ... You're derailing again.
I don't agree with the OP post. I said why. Animals attacked. I defended my stance.
All on topic mind you. Drive by shit posting is derailing. Not what I did.
So what do you think of my initial reply to @Heil68?
He seemed to agree. How about you?
@Mozelleple112: Shovelware? Please.
And who give s ahit about GOTY? I've been saying for ages it's a terrible metric. If you wanna play it like that, Bayonetta 2 was the first 10 on GS in 5 years. So is it now the best year in 5?
Ah that just proves my theory about Bayonetta 2 getting a 10 being a fluke. Of course it didn't win GOTY, the general consensus of GS staff acknowledges it's not a 10/10 game (probably all except that one guy who reviewed the game) so everybody but said-reviewer voted for something else.
I can rephrase my thread question/topic...
I can name at least 2-3 games from every single year (2001-2014) that are better than ANYTHING released in 2014, coming from an objective stand point and not just because I play on PS4, which I don't because I don't even have one (yet some people are trying to claim I do lol) .
I don't even have a PS4 or Xbox One because neither of them have any games that makes them worth buying. That'll probably change with MGSV: Phantom Pain, Uncharted 4, etc tho.
@Mozelleple112: Shovelware? Please.

Looking through your childish comments, it was you who derailed this thread, not me. I've been discussing relevant ethos to the topic at hand here. you say this thread sucks, but I've posted nothing but the truth.
A game that wouldn't even be a contender in any given year 2001-2014 (except 2012, terrible year like 2014) wins GOTY; and that GOTY decision is not because I am upset by any means (which is worse) it was chosen as GOTY because it literally was the best game of the year.
Now that's embarrassing.

Maybe not. Some people here agree with me, some disagree. Yet I don't see people stating which years were worse.
The OP derailed the thread. How am I not on topic? Explain please.. I need to hear this.

I'll agree with you 100% SOM did not deserve GOTY. I struggled to finish it.
To say this is the worst year in gaming ever... is a little hyperbole wouldn't you say?
Then to omit quality games from the list? Show me how to do that. My mind won't allow it.
I have seen the gaming crash of 83'. I played ET. It is not the worst game ever.
There were damn fine games released this year. If you didn't get around to play them. That's cool too.
There are games that deserve GOTY though. IMO
You're free to have your opinions too. I just don't agree with them.
Peace.

Why in the world do people struggle so much with objectivity .vs. subjectivity on this forum? It's ridiculous.

That doesn't prove anything. I know you desperately don't want to accept Bayonetta's 10 but Kevin has said before that GS takes 10s very seriously and all the review staff has to approve them.
What about the years of the video game crash which was flooded with bad games?
No it wasn't flooded with bad games really. The market was saturated with Atari 2600s causing the shares to plummet. Do to no sales. Everyone had one that was going to buy one. They put most of their expected yearly earnings into console sales that were not there.
They hemorrhaged money so fast they had to lay-off 100s to 1000s of employees. At that point it was over. The suits crashed gaming.
There were still good games though. That dried up quick, due to suits miscalculations on the market and lack of funding. PC still had great games. The cost of a personal computer back then was ridiculous though.
The years sega stopped making consoles and when good pc game design shifted to a more console oriented structure.
It was disappointing if
A) you have shit taste in video games
B) broke as hell
Other than that it was pretty decent except the games that got released unfinished/buggy and the games that got pushed back to 2015.

Actually the market was saturated with too many console choices and anyone able to make games no matter how bad they were. Which led to the glut on the market and unsuspecting people making bad purchase decisions.
PC gamers are the most spoiled brats on the internet. The amount of options we have had this year in gaming has been breath taking. I mean we got DS2 early this year, we had a well made action survivor horror game for god's sake how often does that usually happen? A great hack n slash, a great fighting game, great racing games more than 1, good shooters, sports games always around, MMO's WoW had a damn expansion, great RPG's, fun action games, GTA V was last year but still a great deal of people replayed it again this year. This year has spoiled a broad too many gamers more than anything PC gamers that just wanna bitch about everything that's not exclusive to them, and sadly the whole console exclusive BS that is non-sense when there's too many great 3rd party games out there available for everyone that are much better than most exclusives.
This year was pretty good though, even in comparison to 2012
2012
2014
and I didn't even have to resort to 2014's Reissued games to make that list, and I didn't mention Need for Speed Most Wanted on 2012's list and I neglected Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes, Child of Light, and Forza Horizon 2 on 2014's list, heck I didn't even mention Super Smash Bros. on 2014.
2014 just simply had more to offer than 2012's list so in comparison no 2014 was not lackluster, it just had more disappointments than not, people had high hopes for Watchdogs and it flopped, People thought Titanfall was going to trump Call of Duty (another game I neglected on both lists) and news flash it didn't. Dark Souls 2 wasn't what the game looked like at E3, Destiny was anything BUT the next Halo.
All this year did was show that what is shown at E3 doesn't necessarily mean that's the product you're going to be getting at release.
This year blew away 2013 like it was not even there.
You're kidding right? There's not a single game from 2014 that even touches GTA V, The Last of Us or Bioshock Infinite. Anyone one of those 3 could have swept every 2014 GOTY like it was nothing.
Bayonetta 2, dragon age I, Smash bros, shadows of mordor, child of light. I hope you were kidding.
I've enjoyed this year, Shadow Of Mordor is the only game which has actually come out with something new and fresh and next gen for a start, nothing else this year has reinvented anything like Shadow Or Mordor has.
but then again the games which have come out this year, have been good, not great but good, but it's only the first year, try making a claim to the worst year of gaming and using the years that consoles launched to find out if it is the worst, not a few years in to a consoles life and using them.
Notice its the people who game primarily on a PS4 who keep making these threads?
2014 has been a great year for me.

Have you played Divinity, Wasteland, CK2 DLC, Civ DLC, Beyond earth, South Park, Wolf amongst us, Dragon Age I, Football manager 15, Walking dead season 2, AC unity, Titanfall, Farcry4, Shadow of Modor, and god knows how many I've forgotten, just on the PC alone. If you game on a PC there's been tons of fantastic games.

Translation - "I hate PC gaming so I will generalise everything".
@Joedgabe: so you're generalizing PC gamers just because of PC, but ignoring the PC gamers in this thread that disagree?
yes i'm willing to discriminate PC gamers in general as opposed to gamers. Though every fanboy is bad the pc gamer circle jerk is spoiled beyond recovery.

well it's just that your generalization doesn't make a whole lot of sense
Nah...There has been a lot of good games to play this year. Also Shadow of Mordor was a damn good game. While I personally feel that Dragon Age would have been the better choice I get why GS picked SoM.
The OP derailed the thread. How am I not on topic? Explain please.. I need to hear this.

Well to be the worst year ever is quite hyperbolic. I'm born in 1993, so I've only been playing video games for 17 years, which is longer than some people on this forum's entire life, but a far cry from the oldest. I'm sure there were many years in the 70s/80s that were a lot worse.
but in my opinion, this year was definitely the worst by a long shot from 1996 to 2014. the only year that comes close to being this bad is 2012.
This year blew away 2013 like it was not even there.

And not a single game in your post is on the same level as The Last of Us, GTA V or Bioshock Infinite. Especially The Last of Us, a game with 250 something GOTY awards and one of the best games of the generation, comparing that to those games you mentioned is an insult and like comparing a Cadillac and Lexus to a Rolls Royce.

What console choices? The Atari 2600 woody... or the Atari 2600 woody? Pong? If their were choices maybe there wouldn't have been a crash. :D
Back then it was a crap shoot on buying a good game. I would go to MOM & POP stores to test them first or at a friends house. There were places where they would demo games.
There was no coverage to steer you clear of flops like there is today. I imagine a lot of people were duped into buying trash. There were still good games to be had.
Who cares what the GOTY winner was and whether you agree, the year was full of great releases all around, and a still a rather impressive year considering it was a first year for both Xbox One and Playstation 4, and a great year for the Wii U as well. We saw releases like:
If nobody can find a good deal of fun in any of that they should probably stop wasting their time gaming.
