Seriously though, as much as Nintendo's fans keep trying to downplay it, things are pretty bad for Nintendo right now. Iwata even said he might step down if they fail to meet their next earnings projection, which means bad things. The shareholders were pissed off enough over the 3DS's poor initial sales, and this is the second system Nintendo has released in a row that has performed poorly at launch. The difference is, the 3DS was being sold at a profit before the price slash, so the price slash did not hurt Nintendo that badly. They currently lose money on every Wii U sold, and if they cut the price by $50 or more that means that they will be taking a much bigger hit. The system will have to have a very strong attach ratio, and unfortunately, the Wii's attach ratio was poor.
It's a case of "damned if they do, damned if they don't." The Wii U is about 6 years too late, and for such a whimpy system to release before the PS4 and Xbox 720 are even announced, Nintendo pretty much doomed it out the gate.
