[QUOTE="Senor_Kami"] You wanted to boycott Activision because they wanted a PS3 price cut, but now you're happy that there might be a PS3 price cut? I don't understand.

navyguy21

Your Sarcasm meter broken?

Why would I care if Activision does this, whatever, I'll just buy it on 360, I just wanted to beat a Cow in this thread, is all.

I thought the tear was a dead give away, or the praying for god bit. :P

Sorry SolidTy, but you know System Wars is serious business :P Also, a statement like that are completely possible on here, some people are really that fanatical about PS3, so its not entirely far-fetched :lol:

Wow, that sounds like a challenge, it may just be impossible.

Again... this doesn't seem like a Sony official announcement, but merely a prediction by some self-important gaming publicist who wants to be "right."

Sony wouldn't announce a price cut until its made reality at stores. Announcing it makes the consumer wait for the price drop. They are always stealth about it.

~~~
A price drop needs to happen sooner rather than later... and TGS would be too late. Its got to happen before the end of the summer. To be able to build up for the holiday season. And to allow me to finally buy one.
Can Sony afford a price cut? It was my understanding that they were taking a loss on every console sold.
Where would Sony get the money too keep it up? They've lost so much that there might a possibility that Sony is putting everything they have into the PS3 at this point. Announcing all their heavy hitters and cuttin the price down. What would happen if the PS3 still would be in a stalemate?
If by means of the Slim, they are cutting manufacturing costs, they could afford a price cut, even if it is at a loss.
First party exclusives bro, they really sell a lot and Sony doesn't produce Playstations only.
And the rest of their business is dragging, too. Home electronics apart from gaming (TVs, audio systems, and the like) are on a downturn due to the recession. Haven't heard much on the professional front, either, probably for similar reasons. And how is SOE and Everquest doing these days?
Last gen, Sony pulled an undercutting price drop on their PS2 about a week before E3. I'd say that counts.
I honestly wouldn't get my hopes up because every time a big event comes around, sony doesn't do it. The most logical thing would be to price cut the console near the holidays.
Probably to build some lead time, build excitement and anticipation prior to the holiday season. If they did it right before, people may not get the drift until after Black Friday.
What is doing well right now? Still a hell of a lot more HDTVs are in homes now, giving some the want for HD systems. Besides the gaming industry here in the UK has really gone up, they did something that boosts the economy for gaming or something, can't remember what though.
Then how come we're not at the majority point even though the analog cutoff has already occurred? HDTV isn't all it's cracked up to be for the average American, to say nothing of people who would sooner give up TV than buy a new one when it (finally) dies. Anyway, Sony isn't the only company making HDTVs and certainly not the best price-performance-wise.
Can Sony afford a price cut?
Gnr_Helsing
No. They're losing money hand over fist. If they drop the price, I expect them to take more features out, like WiFi...Not sure, just speculation. It's nothing new to them. They're the very first console maker I have seen take out features after a console was released.
Analog cut off? We don't get that til 2012 or something like that in Britan. Sure it may not be the best brand for price to performance, but for those who want the quality of a Sony TV and can afford it will get it. Don't Sony own Sony Ericcson? Sony are hardly going to go down are they? I mean there are other companys with bigger problems, Windows with Windows 7, the general breakdown of banks. Sony are in a much more secure position than some.
You were asking God for a sign of a price cut on a video game console? One that you already own? Just because a company like Activision decided to practice business ethics?
Jeez, what does a guy have to do around here to make his comments completely over the top sarcastic?
I thought I had everyone at SUCK ON IT ACTI!!!
The fact there's gonna be a new PSP on store shelves priced at 249 come October makes it hard to believe Sony will drop the price of the PS3 to 299.
From Sony's latest quarterly report quarter ending dec. 31 2008):
In the PS3 business, Sony intends to expand the platform through an enhanced line-up of software, and will continue to
strive to improve the profitability of PS3 hardware through cost reduction measures, including reducing the size of key
semiconductors and the number of components. In addition, Sony intends to promote the further expansion of the PSP®
(PlayStation Portable) platform by improving the breadth of software titles, functionality and services. At the same time,
Sony will aim to improve its profitability by actively engaging in the development of non-game networked services, and by
offering the world of interactive entertainment, with games at its core, to its users through both packaged software and the
network.
it seems to me, sony is still hoping that they'll be able to keep selling at its current price point for the rest of this year. i think they'd like to see a few months of profitability to please their investors, which are the most important people to the managers of any company.
I don't want MS to go bankrupt either, that means no more Windows and were forced to buy Linux or Mac. I use a Mac but Windows is a very very reasonable OS.
Um.. Sony is still ONE of the top electronics company (together with Panasonic and Samsung)
Every business is dragging. Even top companies are liable to go bankrupt.
Tidbit: Sony was able save 3 billion due to management reorganization.
Why do people here tend to hate Sony overall and hope they go bankrupt -_-;.
just for the sake of hating I pray to God that sony doesn't goes bankrupt and the pride of the haters makes m$ go bankrupt.
Pride comes just before a fall
I don't want MS to go bankrupt either, that means no more Windows and were forced to buy Linux or Mac. I use a Mac but Windows is a very very reasonable OS.
To be fair, no one would force you to buy Linux as it can be had very easily and legally for free. I actually use Linux and like it very much. If my companies VPN software didn't require Windows I'd have no need for a Windows box at all anymore.
But I agree that Windows is reasonable software. I just got fed up with MS treating me like a criminal when I had to validate my legally-owned software.
[QUOTE="HuusAsking"]And the rest of their business is dragging, too. Home electronics apart from gaming (TVs, audio systems, and the like) are on a downturn due to the recession. Haven't heard much on the professional front, either, probably for similar reasons. And how is SOE and Everquest doing these days?simslifer
i'm sensing a $10 discount ... max.Phazevariance
Yes, because a $10 price drop would generate the sales boost Sony is looking for :P I think it's safer to assume Sony won't cut the price, and will simply introduce a holiday bundle.
why would they release a PS3 slim if they weren't cutting the price?
Can Sony afford a price cut?
MortalDecay
No. They're losing money hand over fist. If they drop the price, I expect them to take more features out, like WiFi...Not sure, just speculation. It's nothing new to them. They're the very first console maker I have seen take out features after a console was released.
It's a chicken-and-egg problem. To afford a price cut, Sony needs to sell more units. To sell more units, Sony needs to cut the price. Now Sony can go into the holidays hoping a stronger game library, holiday bundles, and holiday sales move a significant number of units, or it can take a risk on a price cut. - There are two problems with a price cut - first, there's no guarantee that it generates a significant long-term boost. The PS3 could price cut going into the holidays, and be right back to where it is now by next June. If that happens, Sony will become even less profitable, despite strong holiday sales. The second problem is that there's no guarantee the competition isn't setting up to retaliate against a price cut. Nintendo could easily have region-specific $200 Wii holiday bundles set to counter, and MS could be ready for a $50 price cut to all Xbox 360 models, leaving them as the price leader. - Sony isn't in a position of power. People were acting like Activision was making drunken comments yesterday, but the reality is, Sony's market position is fragile. Publishers and competitors alike can easily play Sony's weak position to their advantage.
If it is true, watch it only be like a $25 price cut!
Wasdie
C'mon Wasdie, you know better than this. Companies price-cut by large dollar amounts because it creates a surge in buying. If you drop by $25, people are just going to wait for the "real" price cut. If you drop by $50 ~ $100, people will make the leap. There's absolutely no point to a small price cut, and Sony is well aware of that.
