Gamers are obsessed with having choices in their games, having open ended sandbox games that fit the bill of Fallout 3 and Skyrim. These games don't have the creativity and passion that games like Bayonetta and Catherine have.
Many Japanese games are wacky and inventive, whereas lots of Western games just rip of movies.
Call of Duty - Apocalypse Now, Enemy at the Gates, Fight Club, Terminator 2 etc...Uncharted - Indiana Jones, Lawrence of Arabia etc...
Dragon Age Origins - Lord of the Rings etc...
Mass Effect - The Bladerunner, Star Wars etc...
Now if you just look at games like Mario & Bayonetta. Tell me what movies they rip off ?
Western games may be a few steps ahead in terms of popularity and technology, but Japan will allways be ahead in terms of creativity.

Lawrence of Arabia? Sure I haven't played Uncharted 3 yet, and I definitely remember the reference to the Seven Pillars of Wisdom in the trailer. But how is Uncharted a rip off of a movie that looks to portray the life of T. E. Lawrence in Arabia?
[QUOTE="xXShortroundXx"]
Dragon Age Origins - Lord of the Rings etc...
Mass Effect - The Bladerunner, Star Wars etc...
xXShortroundXx
I'll give you Dragon Age, though again, that came out of the books and Star Wars did not invent the Space Opera genre.
Bladerunner has nothing to do with Mass Effect, and it was based on one of Philip K. Dick's work--very loosely based though.
That said, I could relate Bayonetta to a lot of anime out there. I'll give you Mario though.
I know that Fight Club is based on Chuck Palaniuks novel and I know that the Blade Runner is based off the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? I've read them both several times over.
Black Ops basically stole Fight Clubs plot twist. I mean the whole "Wait a minute I'm not Victor Reznov?" Is just a clone of "Wait a minute, I'm Tyler Durden?"
The Bladerunners influence on Mass Effect was in the parts like Omega when you are down by the club (can't remember name) and you look up in the sky to see a lively city bustling, with cars flying in the air and the soundtrack would have many of the same strings used in the Bladeunner ost but apart from that there were several other times in the story that made references to the bounty hounter type blade runners such as that DLC character, (can't remember name either :P )
If you play Uncharted 3, you will realise that it's centered around T.E Lawrences life and it makes direct connections to Lawrence of Arabia at several times throughout the story.
why did you ignored my post? bayonetta is based on witchcraft and occultism books AND other books like the divine comedy which is a WESTERN book. and mario is like any regular knight's history where a hero enters a castle to rescue a kidnapped princess from a dragon.
Demon Souls and Dark Souls are Japanese games that is heavily inspired by Western themes. Thread Fail
agreed. You get it.All opinions broski. Japanese develop their art styles from manga and anime. When they make a game they seem to want their world to start from scratch. Where as western developers like to use a pre-existing world. I prefer Western games to Japanese, but I don't go around saying Western > Japanese, because I know my opinions aren't fact.

Mario gets a pass... but most Japanese games rip off anime.
Honestly it really depends on the genre...
Action games like Contra have nothing to do with Anime.
JRPGs like Final Fantasy look very much like Anime.
-
But if you think all Anime is spikey-haired, underage weirdos, you need to watch some more Anime.
There's plenty of Anime that's actually meant for normal adults (see Ghost in the Shell).
Contra ripped off predator/commando.Bad example there.
Why jump to the opinion that I don't know anime? People always think there is some great disparity of knowledge that they can use to prove a point.
Metro 2033, baldur's gate 2, the witcher 2, stalker, crysis, terraria, mincraft, mass effect, deus ex, planescape, arma, team fortress 2, half life, giants citizen kabuto, clive barker's undying, shogo MAD, odd world, skyrim, morrowind, gothic, assassin's creed, serious sam, and many more are games I enjoyed far more than bayonetta and vanquish.
So, no Tc, your opinion is far from fact.

Alright, those sound reasonable I guess, though I could still argue for a few of them :P.
Don't get me wrong though, I just decided to post that, because you're argument is a bit... um... loose. In the sense that you attack those games for lack of creativity by comparing them with other works in the movie industry, when those works are based on something else to begin with. The question one should ask is, are those movies devoid of inventiveness because of it? If you're answer to that is yes, then be prepared to face off a stampede of Bladerunner fans--they can be a bit sensitive.
Oh, c'mon. It's not the graphics. The game will induce stress just like the real job.
jun_aka_pekto
Haha I don't have a problem with the graphics of the game man. It's just the new youtube layout; sure one will eventually get used to it, but who the hell designed that thing...
Edited: *grimace* Wth is up with my use of "you're" today. I need a coffee.
Agreed. Any one noticed the best games of all time are all japanese? Metal Gear Solid 4, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII, Super Mario Bros etc.
I'm sorry. The thunderous awesomeness of the new final fantasy games can't let me hear what you were saying...curonoThis lol. Every FF game to release this gen on any platform has been uninspired and boring. and it is supposed to be the flagship franchise for J-games.
mmm, but the fact that most Japanese games have such similiar settings and charectars styles, and the mere fact that people have people resemble JRPG's as a different genre because they think they are all the same kinda disproves your point.
Listen I love Japan, anything from Nintendo rocks pretty much, but your point is invalid. Alot of Japanese games are inspired by animes and stuff

FF games stopped going for the anime look after IX.
The characters look like normal humans now with Visual Kei-esque hair and outfits. That's about it though.

I might have agreed with you in previous gens but this gen, Western devs have really outshone Japan.
I've enjoyed a multitude of games from both sides of developers though.
Open-minded people get the best of gaming, no room for little weeaboo teenagers here :)

Weeaboo - Someone who is obsessed with Japan/Japanese Culture/Anime, etc. and attempts to act as if they were Japanese, even though they're far from it. They use Japanese words but usually end up pronouncing them wrong and sounding like total ****I don't think just because someone thinks Japanese games are better than Western ones means he/she are obsessed with Japan/Japanese Culture/Anime, etc. Also, weaboos tend to refer to white people obsessed with anything Japan. How about for non-Japanese Asians?

He said Weeaboos rejoice in this thread. He did not say everyone who posted in this thread agreeing with the TC is a weeaboo.
I was looking for your facts but I don't see any. Japan is trying to play catch up with the West and I even read a article with some of the main Japanese game programmers, like Hideo Kojima, the lead programmer for certain Capcom games(RE,Dead Rising, etc.), and the top dog from Square, which seem to agree that they are behind the west currently on this gen of gaming. They went on to say how most of the developers from the west don't mind licensing out game engines, while Japanese developers tend not to do that, wanting to have their own coding, and not using someone elses engine. I enjoy all games but lately I'm having the most fun with western titles like AC, RDR,Skyrim,Gears 3,Madden 12,BF3, COD World at War, Halo Reach, God of War 3, and the list goes on. As far as creativity I think they are pretty much on par with each other. Heck, one of the most intuitive , and creative games, Little Big Planet was developed by a Western company. Media Molecule, which I believe is based out of the United Kingdom, has done a outstanding job with that title, and created a fresh take on gaming. So, my opinion, not a mere fact, West > Japan. Now Japan has the greatest little handheld software.
So what movie did The Witcher 2 rip off,DragonfireXZ95
Wiedźmin (The Hexer or The Witcher in English) is a 2001 Fantasy film by director Marek Brodzki, starring Michał Żebrowski as main character Geralt of Rivia. The story is based on the books and stories of The Witcher, by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.
