I prefer Japanese dev games over American ones. American ones are nothing but FPSs these days, with the expection of the UC, ME and games like Skyrim.

Gamers are obsessed with having choices in their games, having open ended sandbox games that fit the bill of Fallout 3 and Skyrim. These games don't have the creativity and passion that games like Bayonetta and Catherine have.

Many Japanese games are wacky and inventive, whereas lots of Western games just rip of movies.

Call of Duty - Apocalypse Now, Enemy at the Gates, Fight Club, Terminator 2 etc...

Uncharted - Indiana Jones, Lawrence of Arabia etc...

Dragon Age Origins - Lord of the Rings etc...

Mass Effect - The Bladerunner, Star Wars etc...

Now if you just look at games like Mario & Bayonetta. Tell me what movies they rip off ?

Western games may be a few steps ahead in terms of popularity and technology, but Japan will allways be ahead in terms of creativity.

[QUOTE="Oil_rope_bombs"] You clearly have no idea what Weeaboo means, do you? @OP: Not a fact, sorry. That's just your opinion. lordlors

Actually, with that comment it's you who has no idea what a Weeaboo is.

Weeaboo - Someone who is obsessed with Japan/Japanese Culture/Anime, etc. and attempts to act as if they were Japanese, even though they're far from it. They use Japanese words but usually end up pronouncing them wrong and sounding like total ****

I don't think just because someone thinks Japanese games are better than Western ones means he/she are obsessed with Japan/Japanese Culture/Anime, etc. Also, weaboos tend to refer to white people obsessed with anything Japan. How about for non-Japanese Asians?

Ahhhh, thanks for the definition. I had no idea what that word meant!

there used to be a time when borrowing ideas from other pieces of work made you respectable as you were well-read. Now i don't mind this new feeling of how everything has to be new but let's just be realistic here and admit that many major works borrowed pre-existing ideas and get over it...as for what side makes better games....that is just your preference

The notion that Japanese developer are more creative is wrong, western developers are more creative. Japan has been lagging behind for a long time, and it's not going back anytime soon. Japan is never about invention actually, that's not to say they don't create great games.

Agreed. Any one noticed the best games of all time are all japanese? Metal Gear Solid 4, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII, Super Mario Bros etc.

Mozelleple112

Nintendo games tend to be overrated by critics for some strange reason, no one ever claimed MGS4 is best game of all time.

Plus best game of all time is entirely subjective, a game like WOW is far more influential than any listed.

Uh, ok. What about Red Dead Redemption, GTA4, Just Cause 2, Forza 4, Kameo, Little Big Planet, Infamous2,Fable 3, Alan Wake,God of War3,Madden12,Saints Row the Third, LA Noire, and the list could go on. There are too many great games that come from the West to name that aren't FPS, so that theory is a myth. Japan may have the fighting genre on lock, with the Street Fighter, Tekken, Dead or Alive, and MVC series, but as far as overall great games, I have to give my nod to the West.

No actually I find many Japanese games to be creepy and weird, and sometimes perverted. Why do they have the charecters dress in cross dressing outfits or the girls who are clearly underage dress in revealing clothing? I don't know but I hope I never meet their fanbase, they should be locked up. Also Japanese games have storylines that make no damn sense and you can't follow along at all.

not to mention one of the biggest developer in video gaming industry, Blizzard, develops RTS games that are not only popular in western hemisphere, but also massively popular in Asia. Blizzard is probably a more household name in Korea and China than any Japanese Developers.

oh wait, wasn't the RTS game genre CREATED by western Devs? Dune 2 warcraft 1 and such? Aren't RTS one of the BIGGEST markets in asia? WoW, a western MMORPG, isn't it HUGE in asia? Didn't WoW absolutely slaughter any and every MMo that has come out of japan put together x10? I fail to see the point of this thread. other than another person saying "i don't need an HD console, all they play is FPS" ;) Sorry, but honestly, this is just an extended argument from the wii vs the console world threads. - I would love to see what your opinion is about all the arcade/psn games made by western devs that are both COMPLETELY original, and inventive, and light years ahead of alot of this "creativity" you speak of coming out of japan. Braid, limbo and many others fall into this category.. shadow complex... etc?

Ya, not sure when though. It's suppossed to support Kinect which could be interesting as well as cross platform pc play which is very smart as theres already an abudance of amazing levels designed on the pc version right now.

Minecraft will always be a pc game at heart though the 360 version could be pretty fun, cross platform was a clutch move!

Western games tend to be more cinematic experiences that try to hard to be like film. Japanese games have a bigger focus on gameplay, with the exception of MGS4.

It's all opinion. I'm a big anime fan and Japan lover, but I like western games WAY more than Japanesse games. I like the stories and the character design most of the time in Japanesse games, but the gameplay seems bland and shallow by comparison to western games. Plus, most Japanesse devs use western graphic engines, or engines based on western engines.

Nope. West is more creative, both in gameplay and in settings. You're just making mistake of not playing PC games more.

Most ignorant statement of the day, we all know that pc games cater realism and not creativity, I mean look at Crysis, it's art direction is bland. One thing this topic seems to be missing is indie games like Limbo, Outland, From Dust, etc. all of them have a great art style.

And yet Japanese development and industry has stagnated and declined in the last decade due to such a lack of interesting and progressive games development. There's no such thing as 'the best'; and 'Western' quite frankly is a stupidly broad generalisation.

I almost agree. Most Western games nowadays are over-rated FPSes, RPGs and the like whereas the Japanese games still have that chram to them and dare to innovate (altho they're trying too hard to appeal to Western audience now which is a bad thing). What's holding the Western industry up are the indie devs and, ironically, Eastern European devs (like Project RED and their Witcher games and the like).
