Sorry if old.

Found this in Kotaku.

Last week, website IGN published a list of ten ways to fix Japanese role-playing games. Japan's 2ch., the largest internet forum in the world, has responded.

IGN's list criticized things in Japanese role-playing games like the lifeless environments, linear gameplay, stereotypical stories and traditional battle systems. (Read the full list here.) 2ch., where users post anonymously, has responded.

Keep in mind: These remarks were posted anonymously by people on the internet. Some of the remarks might be serious, some might not be. They do point to a larger sentiment, however.

"Oblivion and Fallout fanatics are exponentially more annoying than any Final Fantasy fanatic."

"Hey foreigners: we find your first-person shooters boring as **** What do you say to that?"

"When I see all the 'sniping' and corpse-desecrating 'teabagging' going on in US games, the thought of what what foreigners do when they get mad [in real life] freaks me out."

"Japanese RPGs are created for the express purpose of letting one experience the blooming of their full powers from a total zero starting point. They're necessary for keeping public order in Japan."

"Okay, so give us some foreign RPGs that are more interesting than Japanese ones. I just don't find foreign RPGs interesting at all."

"Oblivion's okay, but foreign games lack subtlety. They lack detail, and the character design and stories are bad."

"Americans can't understand complexity so a lot of the best stuff doesn't get translated. Like Megami Tensei"

"I call 'cultural differences'!"

"Show me an American-made RPG that satisfactorily addresses all of these complaints."

"Do foreign companies even make RPGs anymore? The only games that come to mind are first-person shooter action games. If we followed this 'advice' to the letter they'd have us making Grand Theft Auto clones."

Freedom vs Teabagging: Japanese Gamers Sound Off [AltJapan]

Another cultural clash?? JRPG vs WRPG again?? Its like Endless WAR!!

Wow, the pro-JRPG side of this isn't getting the most intelligent bunch of supporters. (At least, not based on that 2chan group...)

I've always been a big fan of (some) JRPGs, especially the DQ, FF and Tales series. However, the fact that the genre as a whole is in desperate need of a revamp cannot be ignored. A few top notch JRPGs this generation made a fairly strong showing both in sales and critical reception, but nothing nearing the craze last console gen. This is due to stagnation. One can only play the same tired quest wearing different clothes so many times before the tedium begins to sink in...

I agree with almost all of that list.

And Dragon Age is not a "true RPG". It's just an adventure game with dialog choices and RPG elements with boring combat if you want to get technical.

Japanese could say the same about Westerners. Not trying to defend them, but some people might not like the design choices behind WRPG. Called taste and people have it, no one has good taste or bad taste, but everyone has taste :).

Even though they have a point when it comes to the saturated shooter market they miss the point that JRPGs are a joke this generation, there has yet to be a must own JRPG title that hasn't been for an old console or for an handheld. Compared to the Snes - PS1 era it's nothing. Also pretty much all of IGN's points are accurate, especially. STEREOTYPICAL and CLICHÉ, which is why I stay, far far away from JRPGs, and so should you.

Demon's souls and Valkyria Chronicles were the only innovative RPG this gen and they were....da dad da... JRPGs. While dragon age is a dumbed down version of BG2? Witcher was innovative, but it isn't a WRPG, it was developed in EASTERN EUROPE. WRPG has to evolve imo. Enough of D and D from bioware and oblivion with guns from bethesda.

Can't believe people are really surprised they are making a response. The Japanese games have been insulted by the Americans for a long time even though the Japanese have been content with it for a pretty long time. Why must Americans butt in and demand what they think is right.

Yeah you're completely correct. And you know why? Because they broke the mold of what a JRPG should be, which was what IGN was talking about.

I personally much prefer WRPG's over JRPG's and yet even i can find fun JRPG's to play and own.

I don't see the same on the other side of the pond.

Frankly i feel there is something deeply culturally 'unfair' about it all.

A cultural exchange is happening between the two sides, and one side doesn't even want to try out a Western game.

I take the comments of Yoichi Wada of Square Enix as a point of reference.

Link Here

We don't have a derogatory term for other peoples game, There is a stereotype to a genre (but you can do that for every genre of every medium).

But to me... this speaks more about Japan and how it views itself and the world around it, more then it does just about our games.

erm....that came out like in 2000, great game, i loved the fact you could solve quests without fighting and the story was awesome. The pinnacle of WRPG was in the late 90's early 00's no new WRPGs could beat planescape, fallout 1 and 2 and BG2(not even dragon age.) While JRPGs pinnacle is this gen.

It's part of the culture and every culture defends the stuff that defines them. Japan has become the land of the rpgs so they practically think they have a saying on what's good and not there. I imagine that if Japan starts playing american football it will make some americans laugh off and I don't think many americans watch japanese baseball or care for it but maybe many japanese do watch and like american baseball (another example is movies, many many americans don{t watch foreign movies for stuff so stupid as having to read subtitles so Hollywood ends up remaking them american style and they usually suck). The thing is I can see americans and pretty much any other culture doing the same with some other stuff they consider to be their strength. I prefer things to stay separated, many japanese games get insulted here because of their peculiar weirdness and that's why japanese developers are starting to become more westernized in their ways of making games. I think that sucks in a way since then the industry becomes globalized and, thus, boring with little space for innovation.

Funny thing is that some people may not understand that it back fired, since that came like 10 years ago and we are talking about recent games.

Take it from me skip the game. But what i mean by a "true rpg" is exactly what dragon age is all about from character customization, engaing story, character development, lengthy adventure, You being placed in situations to make decisions that will effect your companions and the world around you. I mean dont me wrong I love jrpgs but after playing dragon age it really jus showed me the flaws and the reason why jrpgs are having a tough time this gen. They lack innovation, innovation in there characters, innovation in there plots its all the same with a diffrent coat of paint.

Undoubtedly.

However it's hardly indicative of everybody.

Mhmm, thanks for the compliment.

And what's with the picture of the little girl for? Is it about the bad character design?

Stare at her eyes for a few minutes and see if you retain your sanity.
