[QUOTE="Rockman999"]t's been discussed before and the nationaity of the developer does not determine whether a game is a JRPG or a WRPG, the gameplay does. j=japanese= made in japan rpg=role playing game Try putting both together. When people talk about rpgs they aren't talking about where they were made but the style of the game.[QUOTE="asdasdrgr"] Demon's souls and Valkyria Chronicles were the only innovative RPG this gen and they were....da dad da... JRPGs. While dragon age is a dumbed down version of BG2? Witcher was innovative, but it isn't a WRPG, it was developed in EASTERN EUROPE. WRPG has to evolve imo. Enough of D and D from bioware and oblivion with guns from bethesda.asdasdrgr

I've just started playing TWEWY and aside from it's horrible characters, it's prettyunique. The story smells from what i've played though, especiallymonologue at the start, i almost turned it off.

TWEWY is one of my favourite games ever. But you have to be open and not embarrassed bythemes of friendship and feelings and such. As such, its not for everyone in that sense. The story interested me, I came back for everything else though. The monologue in the beginning actually is fair imo though, the dude does close himself off from people, its a fair statement to say that most teenagers don't really get people. I don''t know how many times I read that quote on facebook
I doubt the story will be bad. So far it seems pretty simple, and is interesting enough for me to want to know what the hell is going on. The combat and badge system are pretty nice to mess about with.
You must know some strange kids. Most the teenagers i know are very sociable.
I like the story, just that I don't think its for everyone. As for the Teenager I know well its basically something like this:
1. Couple break up
2. Trash talk
3. "He/She is such a jerk. I don't get people":P
Haha, these are the most social ones toolol

How can jrpgs evolve if a change in style makes them no longer a jrpg? :|
[QUOTE="NoobisMaxcimus"]Japanese could say the same about Westerners. Not trying to defend them, but some people might not like the design choices behind WRPG. Called taste and people have it, no one has good taste or bad taste, but everyone has taste :).It seems like Japanese people don't even try Wrpgs. They sound just as ignorant.
asdasdrgr
japanese rpgs sell well in the west too...
[QUOTE="hayato_"][QUOTE="Stats_"]
Not only have i played the games you mentioned, I own Demon Souls
Anyone who's played Demon Souls can tell it's been influenced by WRPGs. The Megami Tensai series is justa huge cliche. WRPG's are gay cause you can have homosexual intercourse? That#s a choice you make, just like real life. Choice is somthing you won't be familiar with being a JRPG fan.
The most annoying thin is JRPG's imo is the poor stories. The terrible character models that are either super feminine, or emo-centric. The gameplay is fine.
tagyhag
As opposed to a fake one that the player doesn't really care for.
You need to play more WRPG's then. ;)Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Origins (Gamefly)are still collecting dust on my shelf. :P
Those games are just "boring" to me. Making either Good (Fairy)/ Middle/ Bad choices. are not appealing at all and the reason I think they are so successful is because the user, through the avatars theycreate, have pathological relationships with thier character thattheycreated, rather then expriencing a story and being drawn in by a story that has already been created.

Problem is, the oldest anime chick you usually find is something around 16/18. :P
Now kick in a cliché story + sexual innuedos = brain damage
Although, yes, although there's also quality works, you just got to be selective, same way you do with western developed stuff.

The west as a whole IS more open minded than Japan. I'm not hating or trolling. I have evidence of my "wild claim" (well, all you have to do is look back a few days in SW)[QUOTE="dreman999"]

No, we're far more open minded. This is obvious to anyone who's ever been to Japan, or has learnt about them.
Obviously you like JRPGS, and pretty much everything japanese judging by your sig, so you would think they appeal to everyone. I for one think it's weird and very unusual.
If a wrpg like dragon age cant wow those japanese gamers than i have no hope in them ever finding out what a true rpg is all about.bigboss5akIt's possible if they made a more localized version with slightly different designs with better anatomy , and eliminating ultra-inconveniences like inventory management. It's a good game but seriously I spend like nearly half the game crafting pots, dealing with carrying limited size inventory, and it takes fricking hours. I don't need a second job. Dragon age is okay, but imo BG2 (Baldur's gate 2 made 10 years ago) is better and not limited by console crap, in Dragon age max party limit is like what 4 players? LAME

I disagree to a point. Western devs have made games that appeal, but with examples such as the Star Ocean series and Final Fantasy series, I can also agree[QUOTE="Stats_"]

Everyone thinks that he is open minded more than the others and yet I agree with Japanese more the most famous games in the west are FPS and I find them hell boring and repetitive.
"Attempt to sound smart." "Come off as having no clue what you're talking about."I agree with almost all of that list.
And Dragon Age is not a "true RPG". It's just an adventure game with dialog choices and RPG elements with boring combat if you want to get technical.

I never said I as an idividual was open minded, i said as a whole. I doubt there are as many people in Japan who are interested in FPS games and Western things, as there are anime/manga/ J-pop fans you find all around GS.
Well of course you'd agree with the japanese ... Although, how can you consider an FPS boring and repetative when that is the very nature of a JRPG? You waitfor you turn, pick a move then watch it done. It's hardly a night with Scarlett Johansson now is it?
They're either both repetative or neither of them are.

Sales of Japanese software like the PS2, Wii, and DS along side software such as Final Fantasy, Mario, Zelda, Dragon Quest, etc disagree. A crap load of JRPG fans have been relying on their DS systems so I doubt they'd be vocal here.

That' doesn't explain hollywood movies, western fashion and so on being dominant in the east. Games are only a microcom, so you can't generalize.
When was the last you ever heard of Andy Lau, Takeshi Kaneshiro? Nobody on this board has except for a few people who are into asian culture.
I don't play JRPG's at all, but it's pretty stupid to want to snuff out the only thing out there that isn't completely dominated by the west.

Here's what most native Chinese people (e.g lives in China or migrated from China) think of Westerners, and for your information I think I know quite a lot about Asian culture because turns out I am Chinese lived in China (Hong Kong) for a bit and I see this stereotype frequently whenever I'm around other native Chinese people.
EDIT: I'm not saying all Chinese people are like that but it is true, its mainly a inside joke sort of thing. And most of my friends are Australian so I'm not like that at all really.
What you quoted is very wrong but I can tell you have never played a MegaTen go to. BTW "Emo" really now do you know what "emo" really is? It's a sub-genre of Punk Music. What concerns me about this topic is particularly the sociological aspect of it, western games are fun but nobody is taking into account about why asian people may not want to play games and only games where the protagonist is always only a white male? Believe it or not most people may want to play games that have a protagonist they share the same background with and look like them.
"USC's Annenberg School for Communication has completed a study that compares game protagonists to their audiences and to American society -- and finds that the racial makeup of characters does not reflect either."
