FF12 is the only FF I haven't played actually lol.

Take it from me skip the game. But what i mean by a "true rpg" is exactly what dragon age is all about from character customization, engaing story, character development, lengthy adventure, You being placed in situations to make decisions that will effect your companions and the world around you. I mean dont me wrong I love jrpgs but after playing dragon age it really jus showed me the flaws and the reason why jrpgs are having a tough time this gen. They lack innovation, innovation in there characters, innovation in there plots its all the same with a diffrent coat of paint.

Don't get me wrong I was enjoying DA's story but the combat was just too slow for my tastes. Everything else was pretty much ace.

No im not much of a pc gamer, but i know dragon age borrowed alot from that game. It may have all seemed familiar to you but it was all new to me and i loved everything about it.

[QUOTE="Yandere"]

[QUOTE="Silenthps"] and all they have to say back is

asdasdrgr

That picture mixed with your sentence too well.

Funny thing is that some people may not understand that it back fired, since that came like 10 years ago and we are talking about recent games.

I don't really think it did, what i am saying is that the repplys of the Flamer Dude from the article is obviously filled with prejudice against western games, he does mention Fallout andOblivion, but fails by characterizing all other RPG's from western developers to be all similar to those. He says:

"Okay, so give us some foreign RPGs that are more interesting than Japanese ones. I just don't find foreign RPGs interesting at all."

"Oblivion's okay, but foreign games lack subtlety. They lack detail, and the character design and stories are bad."

Obviously Planescape is a testement to the dumbness of such afirmations. But okay i'll rewrite this and put another favorite from posters here in the forum.

PS.: Though i got to say that, in contradiction to the general belief that WRPG's have evolved, and JRPGs not; ancient RPGs such as Fallout 1,2 or Planescape shows that not much has really evolved in a meaningful way.

The age old argument:

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" vs. "Progressive"

Depends on what you think is 'broken' with a genre

I disagree with most of IGNs points; all together I don't think WRPGs are any more progressive than JRPGs

Some people play dragon age in a slow pace, pause ponder and then take action, both are slow or fast depending on you,but i agree dragon age is faster. I think the only RPGs we can call fast paced(reflexes) are role-playing shooters. Real-time is generally faster than turn-based.

Ignorance and generalizations. A large part of the modding community for Oblivion and Fallout 3 is japanese as well. The subtle comment is also rather laughable when many JRPGs are about as subtle as a nudist walking in NYC.

Really? What about Morrowind?

There's a few, but not as many modders as there are for Oblivion/Fo3.

There's a mod for Oblivion that "changes the character design of all the NPCs" to make them more "subtle."

Then there's actually good pose mods and some other well-known hair, armor, and weapons made by Japanese modders.

Chrono Trigger is even older, the DS version is pretty much just the touched up PS1 version with DS goodies, nothing more.

Storywise and character-wise, both WRPG's and JRPG's have been slowly declining as time passed by, though there is the occasional gem for each side.

This I can agree with. Of the past two years we've gotten two decent WRPGs - Dragon Age and The Witcher. Mass Effect has some of the weakest characters I've ever seen in a WRPG, and don't get me started on Risen, or any of the other WRPGs. Fallout 3 and Oblivion (as well as Morrowind) have always been action-RPGs, and there's not many titles like them out. They have weak stories and for the most part characters as well though. With JRPGs, we've gotten a mediocre FF title and games like Star Ocean. SRPGs we've got Valkyria Chronicles, a Fire Emblem port, and some terrible game called Operation Darkness.

They're all not so great this generation.

It seems like Japanese people don't even try Wrpgs. They sound just as ignorant.

asdasdrgr
Japanese could say the same about Westerners. Not trying to defend them, but some people might not like the design choices behind WRPG. Called taste and people have it, no one has good taste or bad taste, but everyone has taste :).

It's true perfectly true, if western RPG's and makers like Bioware decided to hire some character design artists to make a localized asian version of WRPG's things would be alot mroe different.

Let's see, I liked Mass Effect, I'm really having a good time with Dragon Age and I cannot wait for Mass Effect 2.
But also, 2 of my favorite games are JRPGs, Skies of Arcadia and Dragon Quest VIII.

conclusion...!? HEH! I appreciate both

It's pretty funny because most of those people have probably never even played a true WRPG. Oblivion? Fallout 3? Yeah. Right.

Not to mention JRPGs wouldn't exist without WRPGs.

Even though they have a point when it comes to the saturated shooter market they miss the point that JRPGs are a joke this generation, there has yet to be a must own JRPG title that hasn't been for an old console or for an handheld. Compared to the Snes - PS1 era it's nothing. Also pretty much all of IGN's points are accurate, especially. STEREOTYPICAL and CLICHÉ, which is why I stay, far far away from JRPGs, and so should you.

asdasdrgr

Demon's souls and Valkyria Chronicles were the only innovative RPG this gen and they were....da dad da... JRPGs. While dragon age is a dumbed down version of BG2? Witcher was innovative, but it isn't a WRPG, it was developed in EASTERN EUROPE. WRPG has to evolve imo. Enough of D and D from bioware and oblivion with guns from bethesda.

You know the Witcher is considered a WRPG just like both Magna Carta games are considered JRPGs. As for the topic it seems some of the Japanese gamers are just as bias as the gamers from the West.

the concept of RPGs was born in west and first videogame RPGs were wRPGs.

First jRPG was a complete shameless clone of Ultima III just with slightly different graphics. In modern times Enix would get sued into oblivion for making a game like that.

Now I wouldn't say jRPGs wouldn't exist if it wasn't for wRPGs..nobody can say that. It is however undebiable that jRPGs were born from copyign wRPGs

Persona 3 Fes, Persona 4, FFXII, Demon Souls, Digital Devil Saga 1,2 , MegaTen 3, Dragon Quest 8 were vastly superior to FFX. Heck I may dislike Lost Odyssey but it was better than FFX.

In previous generations, when i played a good rpg it would be hard for me to discern whether or not it was from Japan. (unless I already knew the developer) Nowadays, I can instantly tell a jrpg form a wrpg because the differences in quality are so great.

For example Star Ocean: the Last Hope Vs. Mass Effect

- I know these tiles have different game mechanics however, it is the things like character interaction, character development, plot development, story, and sometimes moral choices that star ocean and many other jrpg's this gen are lacking.

- Features such as full voice acting are almost always missing in jrpgs; very few people want to read blocks of text when playing a game.

- jrpgs are still my favoraite enre but it is a bit frustrating to see a lack of evolution in the genre.

Here's a couple of links to compare and contrast

Star Ocean

Sadly though SO4 was a medicore JRPG I find it better than Mass effect.

Why do you hate WPGs so much?
