Not to mention JRPGs wouldn't exist without WRPGs.

asdasdrgr
Can you prove that?

Old JRPG are more similar to WRPG then current JRPG.

JRPG's do have their problems, but so do WRPG's

everything almost every single fantasy WRPG dose is to take and rip-off the whole concept of j.r.r tolkein's books

which isnt very impressive,

however the lack in JRPG's evolving can be best discribed as the "eastern anwsere to FPS"

after IGN's blogs, they should make that next.

Oh, their responses are just teeming with intelligence and well thought out rebuttals..AAllxxjjnn
My thoughts exactly, the only response that rings at all true is the cultural differences one, and that's just common sense. Personally, I enjoy JRPGs and WRPGs, for different reasons, and seeing junk like this is depressing.

those comments seem to indicate that they are somewhat offended. They shouldn't view this as a cultural attack. If their devs followed this advice their gaming would improve. They could approach the criticism with an open mind, and maybe reject a few points (like the save point thing), but JRPGs have a lot of room for improvement

In previous generations, when i played a good rpg it would be hard for me to discern whether or not it was from Japan. (unless I already knew the developer) Nowadays, I can instantly tell a jrpg form a wrpg because the differences in quality are so great.

For example Star Ocean: the Last Hope Vs. Mass Effect

- I know these tiles have different game mechanics however, it is the things like character interaction, character development, plot development, story, and sometimes moral choices that star ocean and many other jrpg's this gen are lacking.

- Features such as full voice acting are almost always missing in jrpgs; very few people want to read blocks of text when playing a game.

- jrpgs are still my favoraite enre but it is a bit frustrating to see a lack of evolution in the genre.

Here's a couple of links to compare and contrast

Star Ocean

Mass Effect

Sadly though SO4 was a medicore JRPG I find it better than Mass effect.

Thats because you got no taste and find any JRPG you play good because its characters are bland and look like Jpop idols.

Everyone has to think about this in the right context Japan is only a nation of 110 million vs. the entire western hemisphere encompossing europe and north america which is like I dunno over a freakin billion people?

Do the math and you'll get it, a country that has roughly 1/10th the number of people and you expect them to foot the bill and compete with innovation coming from a much greater population? Get real folks.

Lmao. I lol'd when they claimed WRPG have poor stories. Especially compared to JRPG's that boil down to some teen kid with big hair crying about hope, faith and friendship.

I honestly do not understand why western people enjoy all that crap. All the silly anime characters, terrible bland stories. I could go on, but i wont.

I use to thik the same thing. My first WRPG was D&D: Eye of the beholder back when I was a kid. I hated that game and never played a WROG until I played KOTOR (now I enjoy a lt of the titles). You should give Planescape Torment a try if you like a well written story (d just don't mind the graphics). As for that that article I kind of laughed at the WPGs have bad stories. Sure they are some bad seeds but that can be said about JRPGs but I have played some that have great stories.

The IGN writer seems like hes trying to start some **** rather than positively suggest some changes. 2ch just reacted like a little kid.

I do agree with IGNs #5 and #10. #5 is just part of Japanese culture but I cant stand it. Makes me want to strangle those characters. Orihime anyone? #10 is how I felt when I saw FF13.

Im guessing the IGN writer played some Demons Souls, got mad, and decided to talk some ****.

Wow Im surprised at all the comments. Are people in the Westreally surprised? What makes there comments right or wrong really?

Just visit any FF or JRPG thread here and you'll see this hate is pretty minimal to the haters saying the JRPG genre hasn't changed, the chracters suck or look like girls, story, linear, etc etc etc.

Anyone who's played Demon Souls can tell it's been influenced by WRPGs. The Megami Tensai series is justa huge cliche. WRPG's are gay cause you can have homosexual intercourse? That#s a choice you make, just like real life. Choice is somthing you won't be familiar with being a JRPG fan.

The most annoying thin is JRPG's imo is the poor stories. The terrible character models that are either super feminine, or emo-centric. The gameplay is fine.

this.

all fantasy WRPG's are about elfs, dwarfs, warriors and mages, the stroy is usually bad, while they concentrate on having a complecated character system

you dont feel the same conection to your character as you do with JRPG's

, see i can do the same,

dosent change the fact that its just an opinion

Oblivion. All you need to do is start a bunch of escort quests and, bam, you got your self a small army.

Also, Fable and fable 2. You can ask a bunch of town people to follow you and you have another small army. Or if you evil, bandits start following you too, you can have an army of them at once. So that's 2. Happy.

I hated Vaan, Penelno why were they in the game? They had so little to do with the story if anything at all. I also didn't like where the story goes after StillShrine dungeon. But what do you expect when the director who is also the main writer leaves the project during development.

I wasn't talking about ign,but someone that posted before and there is no such thing as WRPG gameplay wise, those are generalizations, it has design concepts, that were implemented first in wrpg? Yes, since they were the first and they created rpgs.It is like a father who created rpgs, but then the child(JRPG) learned with the father and surpassed him. WRPG had its glory days in late 90's and early 00's nothing came close, but today the better one is JRPG. My opinion. I loved WRPGs back in the day, fallout 1,2,planescape,deus ex,BG2,morrowind

[QUOTE="asdasdrgr"] Demon's Souls is a JRPG(made in japan). I just made a point, you made a bad generalization and i made a worse one. About choices in WRPG, tell me a WRPG that lets you have the amount of hencemen or party members at once as much as pokemon? asdasdrgr

Oblivion. All you need to do is start a bunch of escort quests and, bam, you got your self a small army.

Also, Fable and fable 2. You can ask a bunch of town people to follow you and you have another small army. Or if you evil, bandits start following you too, you can have an army of them at once. So that's 2. Happy.

There are hundreds of pokemon.

So, you can't use a Hundred at once, Only 6. In Fable and Fable 2 their's unlimited henchmen to use and you can use way more than 6 of them at once.

I stopped playing JRPGs after about the fifth one i tried (with the exception of Pokemon). They all looked and played the same so i quit trying them. They were all the same and, other than graphics (2d vs 3d), there was absolutely nothing to distinguish one from the other.

In my previous post i said on the fly, if i remember correctly, you have to go to a place to hire them.(Talking about fable 1)

Lmao. I lol'd when they claimed WRPG have poor stories. Especially compared to JRPG's that boil down to some teen kid with big hair crying about hope, faith and friendship.

I guess you haven't played shin megami tensei or demon's souls. Could also say WRPG boil down to gay intercourse(dragon's age), so are wrpg gay? It all comes down to opinion.

Demon's Soul looks good to me. No gender confusion. No pedophile content. Well I haven't played the game yet, but from what I've seen it looks like it's okay.

Not only have i played the games you mentioned, I own Demon Souls

Anyone who's played Demon Souls can tell it's been influenced by WRPGs. The Megami Tensai series is justa huge cliche. WRPG's are gay cause you can have homosexual intercourse? That#s a choice you make, just like real life. Choice is somthing you won't be familiar with being a JRPG fan.

The most annoying thin is JRPG's imo is the poor stories. The terrible character models that are either super feminine, or emo-centric. The gameplay is fine.

hayato_

As opposed to a fake one that the player doesn't really care for.

You need to play more WRPG's then. ;)

I love JRPGs and there are only a few WRPG games I like.

I prefer light-hearted stories rather than being all serious and gloomy...except Demon's Souls, that's unique.

But its the choice to be gay that makes a wrpg like DA so great. It all comes down to preference do you like more freedom and make more choices in your rpgs or would you rather play a rpg that already has its path laid out for you in which you have no say in how the world around you progresses. I dont mind neither but personally but i would to shape the world around me.

Even though they have a point when it comes to the saturated shooter market they miss the point that JRPGs are a joke this generation, there has yet to be a must own JRPG title that hasn't been for an old console or for an handheld. Compared to the Snes - PS1 era it's nothing. Also pretty much all of IGN's points are accurate, especially. STEREOTYPICAL and CLICHÉ, which is why I stay, far far away from JRPGs, and so should you.

asdasdrgr

Demon's souls and Valkyria Chronicles were the only innovative RPG this gen and they were....da dad da... JRPGs. While dragon age is a dumbed down version of BG2? Witcher was innovative, but it isn't a WRPG, it was developed in EASTERN EUROPE. WRPG has to evolve imo. Enough of D and D from bioware and oblivion with guns from bethesda.

t's been discussed before and the nationaity of the developer does not determine whether a game is a JRPG or a WRPG, the gameplay does.

I just responded like that to prove a point to stats, all i wanted to prove is both are great and both have choices in dragon age you can do gay intercourse :P and in FFX, you can play that sport(do not remember name).

Agreeing with you it has noting to do with gameplay. It has to do with region. Demon Souls is considered a JRPG. Just like Sudeki is considered a WRPG (even though it plays similar to a JRPG).
