Impressive.

It has to be connected to the internet for that to work. I'm sure that'll be really easy to get around.
If someone wants to pirate on your system badly enough, you cannot stop them. You'd think people would have learned this by now.
I wouldnt say they DESTROYED any hopes of jailbreak... first off they would NEVER go as far as rendering console unuseable, they would probably just ban you off PSN l ike they did with the psp or xbox live, so you can still jailbreak your ps3, never go online with it and be perfectly fine.
Eh, it grabs peoples attention. Also, if your never going online, then there really is no point of playing most games anyways. Unless you have a God of War 3, Fallout 3 type of game.I wouldnt say they DESTROYED any hopes of jailbreak... first off they would NEVER go as far as rendering console unuseable, they would probably just ban you off PSN l ike they did with the psp or xbox live, so you can still jailbreak your ps3, never go online with it and be perfectly fine.

[QUOTE="SAGE_OF_FIRE"]This isn't even true. Easyle
Yes it is. Read the entire article.
It makes sense as well, if you think about it.
There wont be any unauthorized content since the key makes it authorized. If in case this is real, sony would only be limited to disabling ps3s that have been hacked and with psn accounts, so that they can brick your console 'legally'. lol
Will never happen. The best they could do is keep you off PSN. That's what MS does, seems to work on some level. Although, it will be a bit harder for Sony in the long run.
I believe that's enough. People who are devoted PS3 fans aren't going to risk a perma-ban, or cat and mouse games with Sony just steal a game from a dev they love and support. I think Uncharted 3 will sell the same amount of copies whether, or not, the ability exist to pirate it.

Without online you aren't missing out on much. Singleplayer is where it is 'at'.[QUOTE="sonny2dap"]from what I understand the consoles running pirate games using the recent hack would be indistinguishable from consoles running legit copies.Kashiwaba
Not if SONY knows something that hackers don't know about :P.
Exactly. The hackers are simply assuming that Sony is just going to sit on their ass and just watch them try and ruin their system. Not going to happen.M$ has done it in the past.. I don't know why people are thinking thats its simply not possible.EasyleThis is different. Microsoft released an update that detected changes with the hardware and would ban that specific console from playing on Xbox Live. With the Ps3 there isn't any hardware modifications at all. You use the same key that Sony uses to authorize content, there is no way for Sony to detect anything.

Even on 360 there isn't any hardware in case you don't know even hack on 360 is a soft mod (Homebrew).

There probably will be something to detect that will differentiate people that are hacking from people that aren't and then Sony would swoop in. (Hopefully).

Well...unless Sony wanted to scan hard drives on log-in against a database of "illegal" files/programs/whatever. Even if they went through all that work, though, the best they could legally do would be ban the person from PSN. That sounds like a lot of work for not much of a payoff.

This is how I understood it worked, presumably any auto-report feature built into the ps3 would only report problems/modifications made, since this exploit utilises Sony's own key's the PS3 would interpret any hacked code as legit, as far as the ps3's concerned the code is perfectly legit and therefore would report nothing. maybe I'm missing something, oh well we'll wait and see.

Unless Sony bricks every PS3 and copy of software in circulation, it ain't happening.

All we have so far are a bunch of hackers words to go on. Sony hasn't said much of anything yet.. I wouldn't really count them out yet.It has to be connected to the internet for that to work. I'm sure that'll be really easy to get around.

I agree. All hackers, etc., are going to do is find another way around it.
But if you have pre-loaded your router settings, the PS3 will automatically connect to the internet, even if you don't automatically log in to PSN. That's the point of this article. Hackers would have to delete router information, hack, get some kind of CFW that doesn't show up to Sony, and then set back up their router settings. It has to be connected to the internet for that to work. I'm sure that'll be really easy to get around.

You're still negating the fact that it would be illegal for Sony to brick PS3s; this was already tested in court with the iPods, and it was decided that all Apple could do was disallow access to their networks.[QUOTE="DarkLink77"]But if you have pre-loaded your router settings, the PS3 will automatically connect to the internet, even if you don't automatically log in to PSN. Why not just turn off your router?

If you don't want to play online games you can.
