Apparently Killzone 2 only used 50% of the PS3's processing power. If this is true, how amazing is Killzone 3 going to be? We're yet to see a console game really surpass KZ2 graphically, and this is only using half of the PS3's power?!?!

http://www.digitalscrutiny.com/content/2010/12/killzone-2-used-half-the-ps3s-processing-power/

Anastasia1997

In a way, yes, but its not just half. Its a bitmore, but GG only used half of the SPE's. KZ2 is still the CGK though, mainly a tie between GOW3 and U2

Image 202

I would think using only half the ps3 processing, the devs would make it run at 60fps instead of the borderline slideshow it was

Are you sure u own a ps3 and killzone2? I have never noticed any framerate issues, except for when i blew up walls in multiplayer map and the pillar broke into pieces and the game hitched for a second.

Black Ops maxed out looks better than WAW maxed out,and so does 360 version in comparison with 360 version of WAW.Here, simple as that.

Bus-A-Bus

What.....the....you just recanted something you previously said.

How do you know Black Ops looks better if you never played the PC versions of the games?

You contradict yourself so much.

I think it was around 60% in KZ2, which is pretty good. Only UC2 is said to be using a 100% in the best looking scenes in the game. It looks like KZ2 has been improved a bit, and considering that they can add CO-OP, splitscreen, and more stuff on screen at once, they must have improved they're engine.

Anastasia1997
actually, U2 used 80%, KZ2 used 60%, and GOW3 used 50% (which is rather funny, since its the best looking console game)

Hmm, interesting. But I remember ND said they had utilized a 100% of the CELL, of course, maybe not consistently. GOW3 however is very impressive.

....Not nearly as dumb as you claiming that U2, KZ2, GOW3, KZ3, U3, R3, etc not even being in the top 30 best looking games . And we know that the percentages dont represent PS3's raw power, its the percentage of the SPEs used

I see what you mean, crappy devs can make a game that uses a 100% and still looks and runs like a pile of dog **** But Sony's first party developers have allways used percentage on the difficult hardware to explain how far they have come. And they are usually right if you look at the best loking games on the PS2 and PS3.

Killzone 3 must be using half its power then because I don't see a significant visual upgrade between the 2.

You're close to being half right. Killzone 2 only used "60%" of the spe's. It was using all 100% of the PPE and the RSX graphics processor.

And for killzone 3 they offloaded enough to max out the spe's "workload" to 100%.

Basically what they improved on in kz3 is, they used the same engine (why not? it's great.) they removed all the excess blur, switched the 2xQuincux AA for MLAA, which saved them 18 mb's of video RAM.

And then they optimised their code to a t. Getting sharper textures, and bigger scale out of the deal. And better AA.

It may be killzone 2.5, (graphically at least), but the game has a great artstyle. In fact, it's one of my favorite art styles ever.

And I dare you to call it greyzone! :P

lol, no the water is alot better on part 3, it's the same engine, but level design seems to be getting more detailed which will overall make game look better.

A friend of mine showed me the Killzone 3 beta. While the water looked cool, it was a baked simulation, completely none interactive. Not that anyone is going to take the time to inspect the interactivity of the water during a multiplayer match, but it's more for visual effect than a demonstration of performance.

Yet whenever a PS3 exclusive comes out, they claim to be using all the power available and claiming this can't be done on any other console. At this rate, either the PS3 has a lot more hidden than I thought or the devs are BS-ing as usual to build hype

You have either not played it or joking. Its ok not to like the game or even care for the style of graphics but, graphics are not based on opinion, its factual that KZ2 has some of the best visuals on consoles. On Topic: I believe it, the cell is a powerful processor.

Processing power is very subjective as I have often mentioned before. That poorly implemented code can make the CPU run at 100% for little benefit. As understanding of the technology, betterment of tools and compilers, the code can be more and more optimised and more specifically targeted to the specs of the individual processes. It is also as the engines that they use better and become more efficient then.

It probably is but when designing a gaming system, what matters is making something balanced without bottlenecks. The ps3 has a few to work around.

It's not better at where it counts for games.

You could find examples of scenarios that it would perform well at though.

Say what you will about Sony and killzone. The fact is the graphics on the game are some of the best on consoles today. It completely blows the 360 away in terms of graphics. The ps3 is a powerhouse period.

[QUOTE="djsifer01"]You have either not played it or joking. Its ok not to like the game or even care for the style of graphics but, graphics are not based on opinion, its factual that KZ2 has some of the best visuals on consoles. On Topic: I believe it, the cell is a powerful processor.djsifer01

It probably is but when designing a gaming system, what matters is making something balanced without bottlenecks. The ps3 has a few to work around.

I totally agree. Sony really screwed up with the RAM and GPU or they would have had one powerful machine on there hands.

Regardless, I still think KZ3 looks really cool (in fact I'm hoping to join you american guys in your HYPE exploits once I get a new ps3). I'm a pretty enthusiastic Hermit but that should'nt keep one back from ackowledging the good stuff ;)

Maybe Cows have it stuck in their minds that KZ2 looks like the early video footage from 2005.

quit living in the past dude, and clearly you haven't played killzone 2.

Nope I have played it.

Why would you? Are you not mainly a pc gamer? Playing on a gaming rig for a while will make console graphics unimpressive no matter how good they look. KZ2 looks great for a console game.

Say what you will about Sony and killzone. The fact is the graphics on the game are some of the best on consoles today. It completely blows the 360 away in terms of graphics. The ps3 is a powerhouse period.Silent_Ninja87

I'm afraid I'm going to have to side with 360 on this one. Sure if you really invest in utilizing it the PS3 can offer better results, but at least developers can actually take advantage of 360, where as most of PS3s hardware demonstrating games come from in house development.

At the end of the day, the majority of games people will be playing are 3rd party titles. When it comes to cross platform development; there is little difference between the two platforms. There isn't much use for that hardware if only the 1st party are able to take full advantage of it.

Which is a shame, because if PS3 could offer better looking cross platform games; it would benefit the PC version by porting from PS3.

If that's true, then KZ3 would be 1080p. Then again, it's not.
