First of all, it's been almost 2 years since the PS3's release and people still confuse themselves over the PS3's hardware? Sad, very. What you guys need to figure out is that the Cell processor has only one core, but seven "SPUs". There's a big difference between cores and SPU's.
Second of all, I don't see how this is news at all, let alone good news. This just proves that Killzone 2 won't be pushing the PS3 to it's absolute limits and thus may subtract from it's overall quality. You could say in return that the PS3 hasn't been "maxed out" by Killzone 2 then, but I think MGS4 has done that already. It's no big whoop, really.
[QUOTE="MojondeVACA"][QUOTE="Malta_1980"]its funny how lemmings bash KZ2 stating its a generic shooter, doesnt look good and gameplay looks boring... i wonder how they know all these things from such a short gameplay vid shown... anyways probably lemmings are more hyped when seeing a 2 minute footage of GeOW2 which is mainly SCRIPTED stuff with little actual gameplay done on a relatively small area (vehicle)...
I personally will wait till KZ2 is released, get the game and actually PLAY THE GAME before commenting... so far am quite impressed with what Guerrila has done so far... They sure came close in matching the famous E3 movie in terms of visuals... as for gameplay its still early to judge but the actual gameplay vid seemed promising..

Do you actually know what scripted means? And are you talking about this developer ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OwSdzyvAvU

[QUOTE="Sooshy"]Spin. Epic said Gears of War only used two of the cores on the 360 CPU.SambaLele
in fact, they said they`d maxed up the 360.
then they said they could do even better. then they announced Gears 2. with gears 2, i don`t doubt they`re saying they maxed it out. but when gears 3 is announced, then it will be maxed out.
That was never ever said. Link?

Well done, you're learning :D
Great, the server monkeys ate up half the post.
Pretty much every retail game maxes out the hardware.
Heck, any monkey can code something that maxes out any hardware. (while (a==1) {a=1;cout" Haw haw";} will do wonders for a processo). What's interesting is the efficient use of computing power, and that has more to do with the algorhythms than with their SPU utilization.
In this case, having Guerrilla manage to use all the PS3 has to offer (if I recall correctly, the OS reserves one SPU and has liberal access to another, so you can't run vital code there) says very little, except perhaps that Guerrilla have a decent grip on parallelization (to what extent, we can't know, unless were sure all SPUs are firing on all cylinders).
For gamers, it's quite meaningless. It's probably useful to other devs as a case study in parallelization on the Cell processor - and the comments refer to a dev network. So there.
Basically, this is useless info for us - we can only judge the final product.

Since when did a game developer who just happens to have the biggest media budget ever in Holland only being able to access 2 thirds of the console's processor power ever been a good thing?
To put a completly different spin on it: "Guerilla Games confirm the PS3 as being extremeley difficult to develop for and can't full access its power."

This is very good news and its good that they delayed the game till 2009 so they can further improve it.

Scripted destruction in Crysis as well lemming.
4.5 cores... so thats 4 and a half instructions at once? Can you even run a half of an instruction? The one time where a hermit posting here wouldn't be trolling is the time that they aren't in the thread.
i now that the 1st killzone was a flop, but don't base the sequel off of the epic failure of KZ. I would've thought yall lems learned that with the MGS4 debacle. Most of the lems was claiming that since MGS3 was a flop, MGS4 wouldn't be much better, and see what happened there? KZ2 and MGS4 are sharing some of the same traits, both of these games immediate prequels was flops and both have been delayed and in development for a while, as well as had big budgets behind them. So if KZ2 winds up being like another MGS4 (but definitely no 10) don't be surprisedermacness
MGS3 scored a 91 on metacritic... thats nowhere near the 70 that killzone got. MGS3 being a flop was more of a, "this isn't the best game of the year like everyone said it would be" type of flop and not a, "this is just an all around poor game" flop that killzone got.

Yes. Well, not precisely.
You can have four SPUs working constantly, and one working intermittently (either because of a lack of load or because it's assisting another one). While technically you're using all five but one is being used relatively inefficiently, you could say in layman's terms that you're running 4,5 SPUs.
It is just a shame that the RSX is a weak piece of junk. Holding the PS3 back.Kahuna_1Well I have to ask you. With the PS3 having the best looking console games right now, whats holding the 360 back? ;)
Well.... I have seen many gameplay videos and they do look very slick indeed (55-60 FPS?) but the graphics themselves look like a first-person-shooter rehash of GeoW with some improved HDR lighting.
It will be interesting to see if it is better than average.
Too bad the gameplay I have seen is terrible.
I feel bad for Cows, they always hype these games and more times than not, they end up so horrible. Most of the big Sony PS3 exclusives aren't even AA last time I checked.
As much as I want this game to succeed and be great now that I have a PS3, I still don't see it. I've never seen it, and I don't think I ever will. I've never been able to shake off the notion that Killzone 2 is no better than CoD4 SP/F.E.A.R. with a new coat of paint. I haven't seen anything from the game to indicate otherwise.
It's very impressive technically, but its gameplay seems very archaic.
"buh buh buh where are the purple lasers!" lmao
I think most people who don't like COD4 will also not like this game. Seems to be a divide between realistic shooters and "alien space jumping" shooters.
wth is 1/2 a core?.....
how do you use half a core?? either its processing instructions or its not...

Again, it's not technically correct, but in common parlance, it's correct. Using half an SPU would mean that the SPU is either being used intermittently or not at full load.
Nitpicking over nonsense like this will only make you look quite bad.

Don't bash the game if you haven't played it. I hate third person games and I thought Gears was going to be a let down until I played it.

There's no way the PS3 would have survived but.....
If Sony waited another year to launch the PS3 but still learned everything they did over that first year, the PS3 would be sick! They would have (this is all made up, people. don't go freaking out) put a faster reading blu-ray drive in, a better graphics card, etc., etc. It would have been a awesome machine!
But that's neitehr here nor there. Back to reality.......
[QUOTE="angelkimne"]*facepalm* Cell only has one core cows, not SIX, better luck next time, hope this THREAD fails.hazuki
This is true. The 360 has 3 3ghz cores, while the ps3 has one of those, but is split into 6 or 7 individual sections. Though, most developers only use certain parts of the core. Exactly why its so hard to develop for. Could be more effecient if done right. Problem is, it has rarely been done right.
no, the 360 has 3 cores running at a grand total of 3.2 GHZ(each core is at 1.07 GHZ). if there was a 9.6 ghz processor in the 360 it would be over a thousand dollars. the cell has one core at 3.2 ghz, and other side co-processors running at several hundred mhz each.
so, the 360 with it's 3 general purpose cores, and the cell with it's one core and several side cores are roughly the same, as we can see with the general graphics trend this gen.

I think "4-5" core usage would sound a little better then "half". Regardless, I Didn't really care about that. In fact, I could give a rat's arse.
How the game looks/plays in the end is what I'm concerned about. :D

Makes sense because it's not close to Killzone 2.
Puts things back into proportion.

I'm actually guessing it's because the PS3 OS can randomly request one of the SPUs for it's own mysterious purposes, commanding it from the game, so, chances are Guerrilla is using that SPU for miscellaneous things that are neither critical nor constant.
Still, the comment is obviously thrown in a casual manner, as the discussion isn't really all that technical and the intended audience is not assumed to be knowledgeable. So saying 4.5 SPUs is the quickest and most effective way to make the majority of the audience understand the concept.
As for the game itself, I mentioned in my first post something much along the lines of what you mention: SPU utilization, by itself, isn't worth much aside from cursory academic interest. What they do with the final game is what's interesting.
[QUOTE="BioShockOwnz"]So the PS3 isn't capable of much more than this linear shooter? Weak. :(Sgt_Hale
The same could be said for Gears and the 360 :|. The visuals and atmosphere of KZ2 are clearly some of the most impressive this gen has yet to see. Not to mention the fact that MGS4 is "the most technically stunning video game ever made". You've become quite the fanboy lately... say what you like but the PS3's technical power is unquestionable at this point.
*slow claps* Bioshock has become one of my most hated posters as of late. Almost everything he posts annoys me.

Actually yes, he used to be a good non biased poster. I would expect after people have been on these forums a while they would rise above, the usual fanboyish comments we are used to in system wars and post with some integrity.
