Hey SW and Killzone Fans,
Have you tried the open beta yet? If so what are your thoughts?

My thoughts:

I never was a Killzone fan, and to be honest this beta still hasn't changed my opinion on it. I mean you think after the second installment, they could change the controls to have L2 as aim down scope, and R2 for fire...What was the point of making L2 and R2 trigger fingers if the first hand developers do not utilize it as such?

I will say they had vastly improved the crouch which uses the L button interface rather than the awkward second analog stick.

I spent a few hours on it last night. I love it. I am not very into MP to be honest. I laways dig fighting through the story based campaign more. But I have to say I am really liking KZ3 beta. I do agree with TC, I want to use the R2 button as my trigger. I always do in SP so every once in a while it trips me up. But overall it is a lot of fun.

The last couple matches I've been in its been incredibly unbalanced. There would be like 6 people on one team, then 2 on the other. I guess its because I was playing at 1 in the morning since I didnt have that problem during the day.

Edit: and I prefer R1 for shooting and holding L2 to crouch on the PS3, it feels much better imo.

I'm not really into MP games either, and KZ gets me too. I'm loving the beta now, after not rdally digging it at first.

The beta hasn't done much for me except somewhat make me regret I pre-ordered it. Ehhh, I'll keep playing it for a few more days and see what I think after that.

The trigger buttons feel more comfortable, and is easily within reach so I can pull fast shots and the like. If they follow what Activision does and add it as an extra option, I wouldn't complain. :P

Umm, you know you CAN switch that, right?

Go into Options and Wireless Controller and change your controls to "Alternate" which is basically COD controls (L1 to aim, R3 to melee). Then, down below where the sensitivity settings are, you should see two options. One says "Swap R1 and R2" and the other says "Swap L1 and L2." Swap both those and voila: Aiming with L2; shooting with R2.

I generally prefer L1/R1 for aiming/shooting, but L2 and R2 can be comfortable as well if you have Dual Triggers like I do.

EDIT: Dead Space 2, BioShock 2, and Call Of Duty ALSO have this under their options settings. So it seems like developers are starting to listen. The difference on those games though is that you only have the option to swap both, whereas on Killzone 3 you can swap one, the other, or both. Either way, I know it's a pain, but I feel that the one thing that consoles should borrow from the PC is full button mapping in all games a la the Resistance games.

L2/R2 aim/fire isn't really fit for PS3 controls, L1/R1 would be better, but I'd prefer either of those to the KZ2 controls anyhow, haven't tried the beta, I'll have to see what the new control setup is like

I liked how in Resistance 2 you could completely edit the button layout to exactly how you wanted it to be. Why can't other developers take note? It shouldn't be hard feature to implement... and pretty much every PC game has this feature... so what's the excuse? :|

How is that anyway? I've seen videos and it looks great. I'd love to pick one up eventually. Then I'd have 3 options for shooters (DS3, Move, and FnS).

Anyway, I know for a fact that it worked with Killzone 2. I see no reason why it wouldn't work with Killzone 3. If anything, it should work better with the higher sensitivity and smoother controls.

Also, random sidenote: I know Killzone 3 will more than likely have Custom Soundtracks as KZ2 did, but it annoyed me that they didn't at least allow it in the Botzone portion of the beta. I totally understand not having it in there though because they want people to listen to the stellar score and sound design though.

I only had time to play a few matches and I have to get used to the lowered health / higher damage or whatever since I'm still used to KZ2, but I like what I've played so far.

Its a solid shooter, I haven't had any technical issues my main concern is if I change the character models and guns it will feel like modern warfare and every other shooter... I don't think I'm going to buy it, I have too many shooters as it is and nothing about this one apart from the visuals stand out. Again nothing wrong with it, I had fun with it.

Agreed. This is one of the things I loved about the Resistance series and wish more games would cop from PCs on consoles: Button mapping for every game. I know devs try to pick the best button combos to fit their games that they can, but some design choices just feel awkward. The hardest part of button mapping I imagine would be accounting for when the user has changed their controls settings and a context sensitive prompt appears on the screen.

For example, in Killzone 3 you sneak up on an enemy for a stealth kill. Normally it says "L1" but you've switched to the "Alternate" setting. Now it prompts you to press "R3", which is your new melee button. Coding for button mapping wouldn't be immensely hard I believe, but you would have to take all those context sensitive situations into account so that the onscreen prompt matched what the user changed the controls to. I imagine a lot of devs just see it as an oversight or a waste of time.

I'm absolutely loving it. BTW, for everyone not happy with the shooting layout, buy the 5 dollar real triggers. They work great and instantly make your R2 and L2 buttons feel comparable to the triggers on the 360 controller. Ever since I got them I reversed the shooting layout on all my shooters and haven't looked back.

Agreed. Bought 4 sets for all my controllers. :)

They're great for those few games that don't allow remapping to L1/R1 like BioShock. Also, they feel way better for driving games and even if you don't remap aiming and shooting to them they're great for secondary weapons (grenades, etc.).

I have 2 sets of real triggers that I don't bother with anymore. I have 3 problems with them: 1. They pop off very easy. If you have big hands like me and you sometimes rest your index fingers behind the triggers when you're not using them, it's easy for your fingers to catch the tip of the back of the real triggers and make them pop off. This happened to me countless times, especially when not sober. :P This is the main reason I stopped using them. 2. The R2 and L2 buttons were sensitive enough as they were, and the real triggers made them even more sensitive. Another problem for people with big hands, since let's say on Call Of Duty sometimes you'll go to press R1 to shoot and the very edge of your finger will barely tap against the R2 button and it'll register as you hit R2 so you'll throw a grenade in the middle of shooting accidentally. 3. They're $5 for literally just 2 tiny little pieces of plastic. Are you ****ing kidding me? :| Should be $.50 tops.

I do enjoy it often. I mean, I prefer the Killzone 2 weighty feel a lot more and is multiplayer set up but this game is still great. I am stll buying it because I enjoyed the multplayer but I hate that the beta sometimes will not let me connect at all. I dont know what is wrong with it.

I cant seen to play longer than 20 minutes... I'm getting used to the exaggerated movement on the guns, and I'm not talking about the recoil. More like when your getting ready to aim. And the field of view is what has bothered me the most, its not easy to see whats around you, I feel bunched in to a little 4:3 screen. I was planning on buying the game, but after the beta I'm not so sure, I just cant see myself playing the MP much after the game is out.

The buttons can be switched so l1 is zoom and r1 is fire, instead of r3 for zoom... but most ps3 shooters use the top shoulder buttons for triggers instead of the bottom ones as it's easier to press rapidly. And it's only a beta, they may have more control schemes in the full game. As for the beta, i love this multiplayer. That map is sick and game rocks. I love playing as an infiltrator and trick killing, or the cloak for marksman. The controls feel good, but they did take a lot of the weighty feel out, wonder if that was for the cod fans? Hopefully sp still feels weighty. Oh and sound is amazing, like bfbc2 sound.. excellent!

^yeah thats the best setup with higher turning acceleration too.operations mode is great , the cutscenes in them look sweet with names on top.

If you wish hard enough, GG might implement L2/R2 aiming and shoot mechanics.

Oh wait, it's already there... :o The "Options" menu really is a gift from the heavens...

Felt nothing alike to me, really not even close. Anyway I think the game is a step in the right direction. Players still soak up too many shots though, and medics should play a much larger role. The cool-down on revive is counter productive.

I thought it was pretty awesome except for how cheap the Sniper Rifle, those Marksmen were killing me with that gun when I was right in front of them and that's not how the Sniper Rifle worked in Killzone 2.

Sniper rifle in KZ3 works too well without scoping. FAIL compared to KZ2.

Ive never played killzone before yesterday...and from the 2-3 hours of beta i played, i will be getting this game. it looks great, gameplay is great, and almost all fps stories are terrible. So y get a ps3 if ur not going to get the amazing exclusives it does have.

Im loving the beta. A lot has changed since the Closed Beta. But its quite sad that they didn't put in the turbine map and highway.

Except its not the sniper rifle, its the STA14 rifle and in KZ2 the saboteurs used it.

Wait, Marksmen don't have to use the Sniper Rifle?

Snipers get the STA14 which is a battle rifle, the STA Assualt Rifle with Red Dot, and the Original Sniper Rifle(Which to me lost a lot of recoil)

Hey SW and Killzone Fans,
Have you tried the open beta yet? If so what are your thoughts?

My thoughts:

I never was a Killzone fan, and to be honest this beta still hasn't changed my opinion on it. I mean you think after the second installment, they could change the controls to have L2 as aim down scope, and R2 for fire...What was the point of making L2 and R2 trigger fingers if the first hand developers do not utilize it as such?

I will say they had vastly improved the crouch which uses the L button interface rather than the awkward second analog stick.

You can use L2 for fire and R2 for aim down.

Just go on options somewhere and it should say something like switch l1 and l2.

I'm not saying the L1/R2 should be mandatory, but to deny such option is the reason I opted out of KZ2 in the first place. it seems the developer can't understand that there are people that prefer to have this option like myself. The trigger buttons feel more comfortable, and is easily within reach so I can pull fast shots and the like. If they follow what Activision does and add it as an extra option, I wouldn't complain. :P

If you wish hard enough, GG might implement L2/R2 aiming and shoot mechanics.

Oh wait, it's already there... :o The "Options" menu really is a gift from the heavens...

played a few matches and it seems very good so far, Infiltrator is fun but not very effective to start with and i never got any lag like people say. All good so far and Warzone is really fun and mixes things up a little.
