[QUOTE="emphaticleech"]

I don't like having to pay monthly just to watch Netflix on my 360, when I'm already paying monthly for it. So I just do it for free on my Wii and PS3.

XBL isn't something I mind paying for.. just most of the games on it are pretty repetitive (see 90% FPS). Oh, and don't say Torchlight. I'll just boot up my PC and play Diablo. kthxbai.

DragonfireXZ95

Torchlight is on PC, so why can't you just play Torchlight on your PC? :P

Because then, I'll just play Diablo! :P

But what if I don't do 'deals of the week', then I'm left paying $60

DJ_Lae

If you don't find any deals then you deserve to pay $60, I guess. (the deals aren't that hard to find)

why should I spend money on a deal if it is for something stupid like Avatar clothes or an expansion to a game that I don't want? You can't justify having to pay for XBL. Not when it is a paid service and we still have to put up with Ads and other garbage on the dashboard. without even counting having to by overpriced items or buying other things, just for having the service, I've had to pay over $400 for Xbox Live over the time that I've had it.

Any way you slice it, or wherever you want to buy it...$40 to $60 dollars is still cash that could go elsewhere. the deals of the week frequently do not interest me and disregarding the current hubbub with PSN, I can't personaly justify the price

[QUOTE="savagetwinkie"][QUOTE="Mystic-G"] Soooooooo.... your point is..... Mystic-G

the point is that live and several parts of of the online structure that games use is not part of the game, for instance battle field bad company 2 uses the live chat feature, it doesn' have its own in game, and its upgradeable without having to update the game itself, I'm not arguing that live is worth it the value, and even I realize a lot of the benefits of what is does is pretty transparent to most users, its still the only service that provides a universal online structure for all of the games that on on a platform, no other system does this except for xbox. And since its a way to be able to maintain and upgrade all of the games with a small patch, thats mostly where they originally justified the cost of live, most people only see, i need it to play with my friends...

Nothin about that gives actual price value to Live. You can keep sayin LIVE integration, but it's nothing more than a marketing phrase if the benifit is hardly noticable.

depends on which way you look at it, there is going to be more consistency with live, and the very modest amount we give them for it keeps them upgrading it, and when they upgrade it, it will effect all the games dating back to day 1, they are also going to have to make it more secure and more, more stable, to give you a better all round experience. Its not worth much, but 50/year isn't hardly anything to worry about...

Yet people have no problem paying anywhere from $5-$15 a month on top of the cost of purchase, just to play a single game. That is absolutely useless without an internet connection. See MMOs.

Lets not forget being charged to buy ingame money and items if you don't want to spend 15+ hours a day grinding.

Hate to tell you guys this but gaming as a whole is just one big expensive rip off. And it's going to cost you regardless. But we put up with all that over priced crap because we love and need to game.

Everyone has their poison. For some it comes from a liquor store, tobacco shop or drug dealer. Ours just comes in disc form.

Actually you can put a price on security. 5 bucks locks down your WoW account to the point that it'd be the user's fault for getting their info/account stolen.

And let me know when that superior service comes out of alpha/beta testing, cause the current XBL is a rip-off.

Your "Superior" services head of security left his password out in the open and had his account broken into... Just be glad he didn't use his first name as the password to the computers. I gotta lulz at people thinking your subscription fees go towards anything other than feeding MS profits, they are secure because they have a massive legacy of software engeneering "Although arguably Windows is one of the least secure operating systems around".

More marketing terms. Nothing specific worth noting. I fail to see where XBL can be considered a all around better experience than Steam. Steam overlay will even let you browse online while in-game. Steams download system is extremely fast, I rarely ever experience anything less than 1MB per second downloads. VOIP in Steam is literally top quality now. Easy to access friend lists. I personally have never been randomly disconnected from Steam itself unless my internet connection went out. I have yet to hear of any serious security breach in Steam. Not saying it isn't possible because anything is with the right hacker team, but it would be hard to believe they're any less secure than XBL considering their whole network is always accessed through PCs and not a console. Steam has quality improvement updates quite often which only require restarting the application when you aren't playing a game. You can make XBL sound good, but there is NOTHING Xbox Live does that requires Microsoft to charge the consumer for it that Steam does not do.

It would be worth it if Microsoft hosted dedicated servers for all multiplayer games on Xbox... but they don't.

If you have 3 people playing MW2 on the 3 different platforms (PC/PS3/360), they all access multiplayer the same way which is P2P through IWnet. The only difference there is that one of them is paying $60USD a year just for the ability to do so.

It doesn't matter if you got it for cheap, the point is you're paying Microsoft to let you play games over your internet. And as far as I can see the only thing people defend it with is the rubbish voice chat.

sts106mat

how is the voice chat rubbish? it lets you chat with groups of friends in different games or just with the people in the game. How is that rubbish?

Also its more than voice chat. Think of the friends notifications, that pop when someone comes online. the ability to view the gamer card (instantly) of any player you've met / played against online. the option to mute / block this person / avoid in future.

Plus you can instantly check your achievements / games played against anyone in your match or anyone who you recently played with. send a Friend request and send instant party invites to people in your match.

Because the sound quality is awful? When me and my friends used to play on Xbox we ended up downloading skype on our phones to talk to each other. The fact that you're paying for it means it should be good, not the bare minimum.

[QUOTE="savagetwinkie"]but thats not part of the game... its a seperate chat service , outside of the game,

savagetwinkie

Yet the game developers build chat infrastructure for their games regardless of Live, keeping in mind the same poor voice chat service is free on the PC.

so? you need to read what my argument is actually about, we know that each individual game uses an individual service, and on pc there are services that are external, but live is the only platform that all the games use the same service and its upgradeable he was saying live doesn't do anything differently, i was just pointing out it does as a lot of the online protocals and structure is built into the OS games can be built ontop of a more maintainable online layer.

So? My point is that these games have their own voice clients, and don't need Live's own client, furthermore the actual Live client itself isn't good to begin with. Live is basic online infrastructure yes, but many services and games in general - bar Xbox exclusives, have their own infrastructure regardless of Live.

This thread confirms that a good percentage of XBL users have Stockholm syndrome.

No only do they not mind having the online portion of the games they own held hostage, they come here to brag about it. :roll

so lets say its 40$ a year

lets say you bought the console in 2005 at launch

40(6)= 240$

pretty much the price of a new console. its a shame and an absolute scam. it absolutely baffles me that people are willing to pay just to play games online

Can't say XBL is exactly "cheap" but it's worth the $45 I paid for the year. Like always, the price is only an issue on System Wars and nowhere else.

WoW actually provides tons of content between expansions. XBL meanwhile does nothing worth justifying a price. That said, why are you comparing WoW to XBL? You're grasping.

Off-topic: But at the beginning of this year I peformed an experiment and went out of my way to find change on the street during my commute to the Loop, Chicago. I did it during the winter when it was too cold to ride my bike, so I was walking and riding the L.

The biggest thing I ever found was a dime. I think I found a total of about $.25. (twenty-five cents).

Maybe it's the rough economy, but there's no change on the street or the sidewalk these days.

On-topic: Stockholm syndrome, man. Stockholm syndrome.

No not, PS+, "vanilla" PSN. Do people really think that Sony is providing the services on the PSN for "free"? Or, to put it another way, does maintaining the PSN cost Sony nothing?

[QUOTE="LustForSoul"]I never hear people complaining about the WoW fee which is practically the same and even worse. XBL is just hated on because PSN is free. Mystic-G

WoW actually provides tons of content between expansions. XBL meanwhile does nothing worth justifying a price. That said, why are you comparing WoW to XBL? You're grasping.

....really? Comparing WoW to XBL? lol For one WoW is actually played on blizzard servers not hosted by other gamers and they also release of ton of new content and updates all the time so its ever expanding even without expansion packs.

You cant put a price on security. I feel a lot more comfortable gaming on the superior XBL serviceshadow8585
yep XBL is unhackable yo.

Un-ha-cka-ble

Certified with 35-60$ a year.

@people posting senseless analogies of having to pay for electricity for a house etc.

It makes no sense. XBL is not a tangible good to begin with. They charge you mostly for the permission of access to P2P.

It's more like you've paid for the house, for the furnitures, for the electricity, yet somehow you're charged extra for having the permission to use your electricity to power your dishwasher. It's not a tangible good, but a artificial barrier put up for $$$, just because they can.

(Of course, insulting people that do pay for it is stupid. Value is to the eye of the beholder, if you find those 35-60$ well spend, then power to you)

Have you ever bought a game at launch?
