Here's my order
AC2
AC
Revelations
Brotherhood
3 is so far down the list it isn't really on the list to be honest.
It doesn't matter how many times you ask this question, the answer will not change: Assassin's Creed 2.
Assassins Creed 2 made the biggest impact and turned a boring misfire into one of the biggest franchises in gaming, so it was the most important. But put them all side to side and AC IV wins. It's magnificent.
Brotherhood, I guess.
AC:B>ACII>>ACIII>>>>ACR>AC1
Brotherhood.
These guys know where it's at.
Though I would put ACII and AC IV closely behind Brotherhood.
I'm not a fan of the series. The acrobatic gameplay is responsable for as many cool moments as frustrating ones, and i hate abstergo backgroud story. That said, Black Flag is a fantastic pirate game! It nailed the lore, naval combat and exploration.
Easily Assassin's Creed 4 for me.

I thought Black Flag would have been a whole lot better if they would have just made a pirate game and left all of the Assassin's Creed stuff out of it. I would have enjoyed a game where you actually field a crew and take contracts from different countries to go out and do pirate stuff a whole lot more than the game we got, which was basically just more Assassin's Creed with a whole lot of cool stuff that you do over and over so many times before you finish the game that it just feels tedious by the time you are through.
4 is more polished and fun, 2 was good at everything and 1 had better combat(i liked the precisely timed counters). I would say AC4 is the best overall closely followed by 2 because I'm a sucker for the renaissance period. Oh and yes I know it's an old thread where a lot of the opinions may have changed now.
I have not played IV, so that does not factor into my decision.
1 has the best grasp of the concept they developed called "social stealth". Beyond the first game, they kind of lose track of the idea in favour of greater and greater levels of fluff that do nothing but pad the experience to make it seem more meaningful and "fun". The "fun" in the AC games for me comes from planning, investigating and executing a perfect assassination and clean getaway.
That said, II, Brotherhood and Revelations were great games in and of themselves, just not as good assassination/social-stealth games. They took a more Zelda-like action-adventure route with more focus on narrative. III I have not completed yet, but it takes a different route than either the first game or the Ezio trilogy and goes full-narrative. I'm only about 20% into the game, and am enjoying it so far, but it's tedious going through the story. Just let me go exploring in the woods, and hunt for my targets.
Like really, they go as far as to give the Native characters legit spoken parts in the original language, and teach the player their methods for hunting... but tread down the same path for all the major plot events in terms of assassinations? Please.
I'm really considering just foregoing finishing III and jumping into IV, because everyone says it's so amazing and I'm bored of trying to give III a chance.
tl;dr - Assassin's Creed The First is the best Assassin's Creed game because it is the most distilled version of what they were originally trying to achieve with the concept. It isn't the prettiest or best way of doing it, but it's the most forward and refined... and that's sometimes what's important.
And hey, old thread is old.
Assassin's Creed 2 easily. Whoever says Liberation, I don't know what to tell you, the game is garbage. They couldn't even make it run proper on the Vita, the PC version is a cash in.
Assassin's Creed 1 - no contest.
Reasons?

Excellent article and helps showcase how the franchise has just gotten distracted over the years.
Brotherhood is without a doubt the best. Its the first AC to that allows you to string together kill combos (Which is the same combat as ac4) . I like the pacing more than AC2 and enjoyed the city of Rome alot more than Florence and Venice. Also in the menus the game has some sort of assassin simulator/trainer which was actually fun enough for me to complete all its challenges, I was hoping the games after it would have included a training mode with challenges but was let down. :(
2 by far. I just wish Ezio's story wasn't the one that had to finish and his story arc was being developed now on the new consoles instead of how it originally panned out. He's been the best character assassin so far.

Until one plays Revelations and sees how he pales in comparison with Altair.
Ahhh yes, to rank the best sandbox series of all time against each other.
1. ACIV
2. ACII
3. AC Brotherhood
4. ACIII
5. AC1
6. AC Revelations
This is the only correct order.
Probably AC2 for me.
Had the smoother gameplay and fewer flaws than the first plus retained my favourite setting, my interest dwindled once it left Italy, might be as i've visited a few locations from the 2nd :) On top of that iirc it had the crazy apple of eden, creation revisionist story bit (what the hell happened to all that in the sequels?).
1 and 4 get good nods.
The first was closest to what you'd want from an assassin game, more down to earth, fewer crazy weapons and more emphasis on stealth. 4 has the fun gameplay style you want from an open world game though, being able to do crazy side stuff such as with the ships.
