dragon age is more of an RPG, and better in some respects than ME 2. although ME 2 is a better game. it's not really an RPG though imo. it's more shooter than RPG.
As much as i liked Mass effect 2 its not imo an Rpg its more like a Tps with RPG mechanics
Hell even Stalker which is labeled as FPS is more an Rpg from Mass effect 2

Agreed. While ME2 is a good game, it overly streamlined too much. And I don't mean on removing the inventory system. Compared to Dragon Age and even the first ME1, ME2 focused too much on using the Morality system as the "get out of jail free card." And even then, most of the big choices ended with the same results.
RPGs should all be light RPGs with shooter mechanics? Mass Effect is one of my favorite series of all time, but they aren't great RPGs. Just great games.
Weird, I see DA or DS as the future of RPGs...abuabedDefinitely agree Demon's Souls is the future of rpgs.
If ME2 or even Dragon Age: Origins(aka as 50 dollar sleeping pill, because lol @ the console versions) jg4xchamphaha someone's just ordered a new PC! :P
If ME2 or even Dragon Age: Origins(aka as 50 dollar sleeping pill, because lol @ the console versions) are the future of RPGs.....than man has the western side of that genre gone crappy. One game is essentially RPG LITE!!(emphasis on the LITE!!!) and the other is just beyond the words generic. To boot both suffer from Bioware's mystical ability to suck just as much as Bungie in the level design department. Remember when WRPGs could be taken seriously? Well hopefully Witcher 2 kicks some serious ass. jg4xchampOh my God. He's back!
[QUOTE="jg4xchamp"]If ME2 or even Dragon Age: Origins(aka as 50 dollar sleeping pill, because lol @ the console versions) blue_hazy_basichaha someone's just ordered a new PC! :P I played it on PC before I got my own rig. My other laptop was able to run it decent enough. Besides the graphics never mattered to me with that game anyway. The art direction was ass. But yeah I'm popping in my copy of Crysis Warhead the minute that PC is here. I've been itching to kick some ass.
No awkward menus, no constant math, good shooter gameplay where headshots actually kill, simplistic leveling. Making RPG's user friendly is a step forward in a genre that is stuck in the past.Caesar-124
In a topic discussing the future of RPGs that has to be the last thing a person would possibly want to read.
ME the future of RPGs? You haven't played any RPGs have you TC?
Don't get me wrong, I loved both games, but they aren't RPGs.

The first one definately is.
I certainly hope not. I love Mass Effect 2, it's my favorite RPG of the year (even GOTY), but it's not the best RPG. I much prefered ME1's stats system, and I want a better inventory system with the ability to buy or sell weapons and upgrades.
One my thing, have everyone where some kind of armor. Miranda, Jack, and Jacob need to look like they can fight while on missions.

I know, I hate that they removed the ability to put helmets on them and stuff, it makes Shepherd look ridiculous when he's the only one suited up for combat (helmet and all), and they are wearing nothing. Not only that but you have to go all the way back into your room if you want to so much as take your helmet off...
I love the game, but Bioware's idea of sequel enhancements seems incredibly apparent to me- if something was complained about in ME1, instead of looking at how they should fix it, they simply removed it entirely.
- Inventory messy? Let's just get rid of the whole thing.
- Vehicle exploration not varied and detailed enough? Don't bother improving it, just dump it (and add planet scanning instead!).
- Can't find a way to get shooter combat and rpg stats to mix well? Let's get rid of the rpg stats.
They even changed the unique style of the first game's electric soundtrack (for the most part) in favor of a more conventional soundtrack (which sounds pretty bad sometimes, but awesome in others)
No. Not now. Not ever.
Mass Effect 2 is a great game and it is understandable why many people like it, but it is far from actually being a Role Playing Game. Having a level up system does not automatically turn a game into an RPG.
A true role playing game should be based on the player's actions, not preset decisions of good and bad. The player should be able to go anywhere they choose, talk to anyone, kill anyone, steal anything, and literally watch the enitre world shift and change based on your actions outside of dialogue. Freedom is the name of the game when having an actual RPG.
Mass Effect 2 fits somewhere in the sub-genre of RPGs (action rpg? I'm really bad with labeling sub-genres). Considering ME2 has an inventory limited to only ammo and health, divided levels between worlds, inability to actually be whatever you want to be, and its level cap halved from 60 from ME1 to 30, I would say the ME series will not be the future.
"No awkward menus, no constant math, good shooter gameplay where headshots actually kill, simplistic leveling" Sounds like you are describing shooter game. And that's the genre ME2 belongs.GeneralShowzerUnfortunately, you don't get to define what a RPG is.
The definition of a RPG is much more unclear rather than sticking to a statement such as 'how much I can bend a story.'
plenty of items, sidequests, customizability, stats, freedom and levels are also part of what makes a RPG. like i said, you don't get to define what a true RPG is, because, at least most of you, aren't in a position of power to change the meaning of a word from a language.
as such, many of the games that have the above mentioned features, like, Diablo, are no less of a RPG than Baldur's Gate currently, regardless of what anyone thinks. I am sticking to facts and established truth.

I don't agree with this. If this was true, then the only rpgs out there would technically be Fallout and the Elder scrolls games, which is simply not true.
Rpgs vary greatly, but if we take a look at what the majority of them have almost always had, then it'd be some type of leveling/character custimization system (usually involving stats). If that's the most common thread between games that are rpgs, than that must be what makes a game an rpg.
Unfortunately, you don't get to define what a RPG is.[QUOTE="SkyWard20"][QUOTE="GeneralShowzer"]"No awkward menus, no constant math, good shooter gameplay where headshots actually kill, simplistic leveling" Sounds like you are describing shooter game. He is not. Mass Effect is described as a RPG/TPS hybrid by all credible sources. You can stick to your opinions and I shall stick to the facts.[QUOTE="rpgs_shall_rule"][QUOTE="SkyWard20"] Unfortunately, you don't get to define what a RPG is.IronBass

I doubt the majority here think ME2 is an actual RPG. If they do... well, I can honestly say I will stay in 2010 for gaming.

Ew... I would advice against trusting what the majority say on an internet forum. Whatever your view on ME2's genre may be, it's always good to remember the huge level of subjectivity that it's involved. It's like arguing about religion, neither side can prove that its view is right.[QUOTE="IronBass"][QUOTE="rpgs_shall_rule"]

It doesn't matter how much experience people have or what the majority thinks if they can't change the meaning of a word. Facts > experience.people still look at mass effect 2 as an RPG? It was really a 3rd shooter with even LESS RPG elements than the original gamelawlessxTo be fair though, ME2 was a game with a stronger identity. It knew what it was supposed to be, and that was an action-RPG. It's not like less means worse. I sure as hell didn't want the original game's inventory in ME2.
Mmmm, no. The only thing that separates RPG's from action adventure, and even maybe action and adventure, are those elements you mentioned among a few others. If they diminish so much or disappear there is no point for the genre to exist, the games might as well be something else in another genre. A RPG without RP is nonsense.
