Oblivion is a very small game data wise. Oblivion is the worst example you can use for a "big" game.

It's got many hours of gameplay and lots of content. More than any PS3 game I have seen so far and if past Bioware games are anything to go by Mass Effect will too.
what you guys think? maybe Sony was right about Blue-ray..i know lemming goin to say i dont care about havin 2 disk..but havin mulitple disk is so last gen..lol...ps3gen
They are right about Blu-Ray...Imagine a game as big as Mass Effect or even bigger in 1080p. It would need multiple discs if on regular DVD and not Blu-Ray. I bet Rock Star is having a very, very tough time compressing GTA IV to fit on DVD for Xbox 360.

But it constantly reuses assets.
Gears of War is about 10 times shorter of a game but probably takes up more space due to its variety. Oblivion ends up using the same models and graphics over and oer cutting down on alot of disc space. Space flight sims from even 5 or 6 years ago have a universe 10 times bigger than oblivion with more content...They'll probably fit in one or two CD's.
Theres aboslutely no correlation between disk space usage and game length. The only thing you can divulge is how often a game keeps reusing the same textures and models. Mass Effect, for such a long game, will probably end up using the same space ships and textures over and over and over to death.
Blue Ray is not necessary.
DVD9 is fine. Three disks = 26GB. They're cheaper to make than one BRdisk and the data on them have better access speeds.
This is win win situation for producer and consumer.

20 dollars, GTA4 will look identical on both platforms, and same exact content, but the 360 version will have better load times...[QUOTE="ps3gen"]what you guys think? maybe Sony was right about Blue-ray..i know lemming goin to say i dont care about havin 2 disk..but havin mulitple disk is so last gen..lol...MickeyTheNinjaI don't care...i'm playing a game for 25-30 hours then i need to change a disk. I'm like 4 feet from my 360. OH NOES! I need to get up and take 2 steps.

Again, where is your proof Mass Effect is not running in 1080p?
Besides, as stated many times before in this thread, Mass Effect running in 1080p isn't going to take up any more space than the same game running in 720p. It's a just a change resolution. All the game does extra is tell the hardware to push the extra pixels needed to be considered 1080p. There is virtually no difference otherwise. The only difference is in FMV's and cutscenes. Those are the only things that are different when it comes to size, and since Mass Effect isn't loaded with a ton of CG cutscenes and the like, this is a non issue.

From what I've heard, most games will not come close to being as big as Mass Effect. That means if mass effect fits on one disk, so will most other games
[QUOTE="Prid3r"]If a game like mass effect ,which is supposed to be one of the biggest game of this gen ( Galactic scale ) , I think that clearly prove , Blu-ray isn't needed in gaming AT ALL .ps3gen
Ya because the xbox 360 can't handle long games!
cough OBLIVION cough

Wrong.
With three disks, increased developer cost.
1 In developing compression
2 To decide where to put what data on which disk to reduce disk swapping
3 Increase time in testing to make sure all the data in each disk is enough to run at various stages of the game.
It was probably cheaper for the developer to try to fit Mass Effect into one disk than to have multiple disks. It would be even cheaper if they did not have to develop compression, or decide what to include in the game and what not to.

Longer load times is sooo last gen... if you count the cartridge era...they aren't.
What the cows are trying to point out is that the same texture that looks crisp at 720p starts to get blurry at 1080p. The only way to counter this is to use a higher-resolution texture, and that means taking up more space both on the disc and in memory (note that it's the memory limitation that's preventing UT3 from looking its best on the consoles--this from Tim Sweeney, IIRC).Again, where is your proof Mass Effect is not running in 1080p?

Paying +$200 for a bigger disc or choosing multiple discs? I choose multiple discs any day. The price for the game won't change, so why should we care.

Agreed.
[QUOTE="adman66"]good to see some non-lazy devs out theremtradr43yes, bioware is a hell of a talented group of a people, i have no doubt that mass effect is going to be one of the best games this year. Add this alongside halo 3 and a few others, and it adds up to a nice 07 Agreed !
[QUOTE="ps3gen"]The limits of DVD storage capacity are being tested, but will not be maxed out by Mass Effect. During a Q&A update, project director Casey Hudson confirmed that Mass Effect "is a monstrous game. In fact, there was a time -- not too long ago -- when we pretty much scoffed at the idea of fitting onto one disc. But, there's an art to optimizing the data that goes on a disc"; Mass Effect will fit onto a single disc -- "but just barely."Buddy, if MASS EFFECT fits on one disc, ANYTHING can fit on one disc. It's likely that you won't see a larger, more sprawling game than Mass Effect until KotOR 3 or Mass Effect 2.

Considering the size of Mass Effect, i agree with that statement. :)
