http://dualpixels.com/2016/02/27/rumor-new-information-on-next-gen-nintendo-nx-console/

I don’t have many details on the device itself but I do have some background for it and some PR techniques they will use for it. A thing to note about this device is that much of it’s production was started in 2014 and many of the stuff I list here was outlined by the late Satoru Iwata before his passing. Hence in the company, the NX is considered the last project of their late president. Employees since his passing utter a phrase at the end of meetings and during idea brainstorms which is “岩田のために!” which roughly translates “For Iwata!”

The importance of this is that this “new” Nintendo is highly motivated in delivering a fantastic system and games, something that I quote from an employee “have not seen this much forward momentum on a project since they launched the original Famicom”.

  1. It has a wireless HDMI dongle that attaches flush to the back of the device. A user can pull it out and insert it into any display with a normal sized HDMI output and the devices uses an evolved version of the Wii U’s streaming tech to display in HD to the TV screen.
  2. Allegedly the analog controls for movement has small motors in them for full haptic feedback. Meaning if you control a character and hit a wall, the sticks move away from the direction of that wall to simulate running head first into it. This can also be used for jerking when firing a gun, taking damage, moving over rough terrain, ect.
  3. It can literally Bluetooth synch with everything, especially smart phone and tablets to the point where one feature is that it can answer phone calls and display text messages from your phone onto the screens itself so you don’t have to stop and answer your smart device.
  4. The closest in terms of “power” it gets to is the Xbox One, but an app idea is Wii U x50 and Playstation Vita x100. The key is that all the tech is exactly the same hardware layout as the PS4 and Xbox One which then combine it with the OS’s strong emulation functions and compiler means that any game that can run of a Playstation 4 or Xbox One can easily run on the NX with near-zero modification to the original source code, especially if it runs in Android OS or Unreal Engine 4. This is allegedly why Nintendo has given out the dev kits so late, as one 3rd Party dev put it “It’s the easiest device we’ve ever developed for. You just take your code, compile it and it works.”
  5. Look to Pokemon GO to get the idea of the type of social features that will be in NX that will take multiplayer, AR and the StreetPass concept to a whole new level.
  6. The real strengths of the device is its usability and ease of use. Developers have described to me more than once that it visually and functionally looks as if “Samsung and the Nintendo 2DS” had a baby, in that it looks friendly but unlike what most people visualize a Nintendo device to typically look. The operating system, named NintendOS alone is very powerful and has so many modern features of mobile operating systems today that Nintendo is trying to be very careful in showing it off for fear that it would be mistaken as running Android. It also has a very strong networking functions as it ties into multiple devices and services allowing a very competent and pervasive eco-system designed to constantly involve the consumer’s lives.

My thoughts (If true):

For a start I think having a with a HDMI dongle would be amazing. I am not concerned by the fact that it would be closer to XBox One in terms of Power. As my Great Grandfather used to say... "It's not how big it is, it's how you use it!" And i have no doubt that with the updated technologies within the system including the powerful OS, It could more than satisfy the whores. It has to be affordable too so having decent hardware on paper but badass OS & functionalities is good enough for me, especially since the primary focus will be games anyway. And if porting is a walk in the park then who gives a shit about the numbers right?

I just hope that the controller is comfortable to play all types of games with no additional need to buy different control methods. Because this just annoys people.

What do you think SW? Does this sound appealing?

Power of the Bone three years later? Are you kidding me? This is why Nintendo is being laughed at... In 2-3 years from now, the ps5/xbone 2.0 will be released. They're pretty much building a wiiu yet again, a console stuck between 2 generations.

Some very plausible information in thar. The wireless HDMI tech sounds like something that is right up Ninty's ally since it's an evolution of their efforts with the Wii U and, man, would it be sweet to have. Haptic feedback would be neat but battery life could suffer as a result. Raw power in the vicinity of the Xbone would be disappointing but could be offset by the ease of use for developers which equals more games. I'm not entirely sure what an app being "Wii U x50" means but, emulation? Yes, please.

The most exciting part of these rumors is easily how simple development is for Deva. But alas, rumors and such.

Oh and, once again, **** you Nintendo for keeping us in the dark for so long. Fuckers.

Xbox one power ... in 2016/2017 ... Ok !!! Next ... Another Nintendo console with 3 years lifespan is coming before it goes into serious life support ... Nah , typical Nintendo shit and one of the main reasons why im not buying any of their consoles.

PS5 is like 2-3 years afar ...and NX is not even out yet ... Xbox one power wise ? That means dead on PS5 arrival because it wont be able to compete hardware wise and 3rd parties will jump into new hardware ... That will make NX DEAD in like 3 years .. Ahhhh not again , ill pass.

I think dismissing it because the quote says that the system power will be closer to XBox One is a bit premature. As i mentioned in the OP, the technologies inside the system ie. chipsets will be more up to date and i have no doubt they will be releasing a powerful enough system considering porting PS4 games will be easy. And let's not forget the cloud gaming technologies which Nintendo have been brewing. The "Supplemental Computing Device" which was patented by Nintendo in June 2014 -

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/12/intriguing_nintendo_patent_points_to_supplemental_computing_device_and_cloud_resources_for_a_gaming_system

If this eventually comes to fruition, Nintendo could very well be futureproofed in terms of power once Sony and MS release their new hardware.

@hanman9: The success of the SDC device is contingent upon many NX consoles being sold so having a low power (comparable to Xbone) , low cost console would make a lot of sense.

Rumors are just no fun at this point.

I seriously doubt Sony or MS will release new systems on 2 to 3 years. This isn't a 5 to 6 year cycle, more a 8 to 10 year. Also rumors are rumors, alot of WiiU rumors were false.

If you're going to make a next gen console, it needs next gen power, so it needs to be like at least 8x more powerful than X1 and PS4. Making it as powerful as X1 is a big mistake. If this rumor is true, Nintendo had a chance to pull ahead of the competition with a powerful and competent console, but failed miserably. This is how you get poor sales.

@nyadc: The gamepad has no lag nor latency...so if this is an evolved streaming similar to how the gamepad works then my guess there will be no issues with this.

@nyadc: "Wireless HDMI? Yes, because I love unnecessary latency, interference and artifacts..."

That was my first thought too.

@TheWalkingGhost:

That's probably is Nintendo mindset. Banking on PS4/Xone lasting a long time to. But at this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if MSoft release a successor quickly.

There's still extra latency there, if it's not hard wired it's going to add latency.

@nyadc: Do you even have a Wii U, coz if you did then you would know there is zero latency.

Many tests have been done on this.

"We pointed a 60 frames per second camera at an HDTV with the Wii U GamePad also in shot. Having established a two-frame latency on the larger screen we were pleasantly surprised to find that the GamePad refresh matched it frame for frame. We saw the same results on other games too, including Nintendo Land.

The result is a major vindication for Nintendo's streaming technology, because we could find absolutely no difference between the input latencies of the PlayStation 3D monitor and the Wii U GamePad based on the 60FPS sample we got from our camera."

@hanman9: aye.

one thing nintendo got right with the wiiu was the integration of the gamepad. the streaming tech is nigh on flawless. the quality of the stream is excellent and its a responsive 60FPS. they didnt treat it as a tick box feature...it was central to the wiiu system as a whole so they spent a lot fo time getting it right.

assuming this rumor is true, itll be interestig to see if nintendo can maintain 1080P@60FPS over wireless and also ensure the encoding/decoding overhead doesnt introduce any unwanted latency. given the extra umph of the NX this shouldnt be a problem. this is assuming they are targeting 1080P for the NX.

on the rumor as a whole...not a huge amount of info. so have they actually managed to make a handheld as powerful as the X1? i doubt it. if its a console then the wireless dongle seems a bit pointless.

was the info talking about 2 seperate devices?

Nintendo hasn't been about power for a while.

As for a next gen PS4 and X1, I hope not. This awful gen has only just started to become slightly interesting. We've barely seen anything that looks and plays leaps and bounds better than last gen games. It's been a really slow gen to get started, despite these consoles supposedly being easier to develop for than previous consoles.

Literally the only party that would benefit from a new gen, would be MS, as they would get to reset their mistakes.

I think it's time console gamers let hardware go, and just see their consoles as simply gaming devices. Hardware is moving so fast, that if consoles tried to keep up, they'd never get started. It's better the gen lasts another 6 years and the consoles build up huge libraries like the 7th gen. You could argue that given the x86 design, they could make it so people just upgrade and all their software carries over. But given publishers resistance to have their 360 games run on the Xbox One, likely so they could keep the option open for remasters, I find that a bit unlikely.

why would they invest in wireless HDMI? seems fake. Being on par with ps4 or xbone in power might be tricky to get people to get the NX if they have a ps4 or xbone, but its probably the right move for Nintendo at the moment

Then again, more rumors. Because we GOT to feed off the mystery of NX, and, being Nintendo related that people could still dislike, BAM! More hits.

I don't know if that's true, do people have the same expectations of Nintendo consoles? I wouldn't mind if it was weaker, but I wouldn't be expecting much more from them. Also console power hasn't always been the determining factor for consoles.

RIP Nintendo 10 Console if true.

Who the hell wants a compressed video stream to their TV, and if its the same power as the ps4, well a lot of people already have one of those.

@ten_pints: I can think of a few reasons why people would want one of those. Firstly,

What difference does it make to the gamer if it is streamed to the TV? It's just the opposite of Wii U, but similar tech.

And seeming that this 'device' can be taken on the go considering the many other rumours, well that would be just splendid.

Porting third party games as described that “It’s the easiest device we’ve ever developed for. You just take your code, compile it and it works.” There would be NO MORE EXCUSES.

Nintendo seem to tackling their drought problems having combined their portable and console development teams, we would hopefully see new IP's and old forgotten IP's return.

And finally, in terms of the power thing, well i already covered that in my previous post.

The dongle functions to receive the wireless signal from the device and send it into the TV via the HDMI port.

Holy shit, if true lol. Nintendo, why is every single thing you do ridiculous?

Also, this is assuming that this rumor is reguarding the console, and not a handheld. Because a console as weak as the Xbox One that is not only 3 years old, but the tech it uses was itself 3 years old when the console launched (and toned down) is rediculous. Also, wireless HDMI? Again, if this is for a console and not a handheld, then dear god Nintendo are cartoon characters at this point lmao.

Why Nintendo? Why do you insist on handicapping yourselves with cartoonish unnecessary bottlenecks that noone asked for, dont benefit you in any way, and that will ultimately hurt/cost you?

You've done this every gen. being stubborn and sticking with expensive and low storage capacity cartridges (N64) that led to you losing FF7, most 3rd parties, and handing your dominant position to Sony,

your unnecessary desicion to use miniDVD on gamecube causing you to miss out on most 3rd parties? Fucking stop it. We dont need nipple tassles as controllers. STAHP please Nintendo.

You set out with the Wii and Wii U to make sure you were different. That you were seperate from the pack. That you were the outliers. Well you're endeavors, Nintendo, have been a resounding success. You are, unequivocally, the outlier to the rest of the industry.

@papatrop: This i agree with, at least to certain extent. They need 3rd parties this time round so it's in their best interest to entice them somehow, so striking some deals with them would be ideal. They really need to push it in the West, a big marketing campaign that isn't confusing and convoluted is essential.

Wii U had it's share of X360 and PS3 ports but when PS4 and Xbone arrived the ports pretty much stopped, gonna be the same thing again.

Because we all know that the PS5 and Nextbox are coming out next year amiright? /s

Probably not, at least I hope they won't. BUT it'll be the case.

That's the thing. If this works well and it comes out this year it will be viable for at least the next 3. Enough to build a nice install base. Plus this is a rumor, so if we're going based on rumors, the NX might also have the capability to upgrade itself via cloud based tech.

I feel like people don't understand how the cloud works sometimes.

I like how rumors get people so upset.

Because on the internet, rumors equal conformation.

Wireless HDMI, that still works with the idea that it can be a hybid device still. And that's the only way I see the NX being a success, otherwise if they go the beefy console route then they're fucked.

Doesn't matter, also the gamepad was in direct proximity to the console itself, there's still added latency, and the perception of the latency if it can be perceived gets compounded and more noticeable spanning further distances.

@nyadc: The gamepad has no lag nor latency...so if this is an evolved streaming similar to how the gamepad works then my guess there will be no issues with this.

There's still extra latency there, if it's not hard wired it's going to add latency.

Technically by definition even hard wired has latency. If the tech is good enough you won't notice a difference.

Data travels through cables at over half the the speed of light, latency with hard wired devices doesn't exist on any perceivable level as far as cables are concerned, as far as we can tell it's instantaneous.

I don't think you know what latency is :P
