[QUOTE="nVidiaGaMer"]Looks like MGS 4 is more popular.Fondness
More popular than what?
More popular then fondlness or GTA IV.
[QUOTE="masiisam"]Why not make a NBA 2K8 > Gears of war thread
Makes as much sense
nVidiaGaMer
No this makes complete sense both games are action, adventure, shooter, and have great storys/cinematics. The point of this thread was to choose between the two if you had a choice of only one. If the thread doesn't appeal to you then why post in it?
Hummmm ...Lets see....
This is tough (gets ready for GTA IV fans).
Topic.
MGS4 will own GTA IV.
Please show me where "The point of this thread was to choose between the two if you had a choice of only one."
If that was the intent for yourthread then i might advise for better written communication..:roll:If GTA 4 were a sony exclusive that would be the one you are bragging about. MGS 4 looks like it has meeehhhh graphics.
ROFL. This is funny. MGS4 won't sell or score nearly as well as GTA4 you can quote me on this.
GTA4 will take dumps all over MGS4. I'm going to love it when it's all said and done.
As of this post, it's interesting to see MGS4 winning (by a slight margin) over GTA4, despite MGS4's smaller fanbase (PS3 exclusive) compared to GTA4's multiplatform fanbase (PS3+360+PC).
Looks like we have quite a bit of people optimistic about the game, whether they are cows or simply die-hard MGS fans waiting to get a PS3 for this game alone.
Let me put it for you this way:
A game is considered to be 100% PERFECT when the game's aspects are each perfect and flawless.
The game's aspects are as follows:
1) Gameplay
2) Storyline
3) Graphics
4) Sound/Music
5) Characters
GTA games ONLY succeed in the first one which is "The gameplay" and which is a game's main aspect and the major part, but still lacks the other 4 aspects, not perfect unfortunately.
One more thing before I move on to the next game(MGS4), we still haven't seen a gameplay footage of GTAIV which is weird and hopefully it will turn out to be good because the game is about to launch in a couple of weeks!
Metal Gear Solid 4...
The director, producer and the creator of the "Metal Gear" franchise Hideo Kojima invited 16 journalists last week to Japan to play MGS4 from start to finish. His goal was to take feedbacks from every journalist(including IGN, GamePro etc...) in order to make the final touches to the game. Why 16?? Well everyone has his own taste, Kojima and team wanted to know what each thought about it and take their feedback if needed to improve the game even more. That was no doubt a smart move from Kojima and team, so you can tell he is aiming to make this not only perfect but the best and wants to make sure that no other games in the future could match MGS4's quality in terms of gameplay, graphics, storyline, sound/music and characters.
Let's start with the GamePro preview which was released right after the trip to Japan:
REMEMBER, it's a preview. Bear that in mind!
I am going to highlight the main parts which consist of the main aspects in a video game:
The graphics: You thought Gears of War looked amazing? Think again. Metal Gear Solid 4 will blow you away with its ultra-detailed characters and intricate environments, painting some of the most gorgeous graphics seen this side of Crysis. In motion, the graphics look so realistic that your eyes begin to register the visuals as a movie rather than a game. From what we saw, MGS4 puts its 50GB Blu-ray disc to outstanding use.
The guns: The final game will feature over 70 weapons, from lethal assault rifles to silent tranquilizer guns, and you can outfit many of them with scopes, recoil grips, laser sights, flashlights, and more. Collecting enemy weapons will unlock new guns and "Drebin Points" for further customization. There are 70+ guns in all.
The sound: MGS4 has some of the crispest, clearest sound effects we've ever heard -- the booming gunshots will make your hair stand on end! The Hollywood-c.l.a.s.s soundtrack is also predictably fantastic, and Snake's raspy voice sounds more desiccated than ever. GamePro editor Sid Shuman went so far as to say that MGS4 has "the best sound I've ever heard in a game."
The story: MGS4 is the darkest Metal Gear game by far: Snake is in terrible physical shape, and the world seems to rest on the brink of self-inflicted annihilation. Though the mood is dark, it's not depressing: you'll find plenty of characters to care about in this war-torn world.

Now moving on to IGN:
Jeff Haynes started it with, "I'm the first American in the world to have beaten MGS4, which is freaking awesome."
"Visually, Metal Gear Solid 4 is even more striking on the console than it has been in released trailers. We always had a sense that what Kojima was showing us was incredible footage, but the detail within the game itself is simply breathtaking. One example of this: when an explosion goes off near Snake, a fine coating of dust covers the camera, adding to the cinematic feel of the game. Another showcase of the striking graphics is the seamless transition between cutscenes and gameplay, many of which are only highlighted by a camera shift to indicate the cutscene has ended and gameplay has begun."
"Another thing that stands out is the sound quality of the game, which is presented in Certified Dolby Digital Sound. The ambient battlefield noise provides a haunting backdrop to onscreen action, making you feel like just one part of a much larger conflict. The game's soundtrack is subtly shaded by local musical influences, as in the Middle East level, punctuated by a driving techno beat that builds when the guards become alerted to your presence and increases further if gunplay breaks out."
"As I said earlier, there's only so much I can go into right now, but this is the system seller that we've all known Metal Gear Solid 4 was going to be. This preview has only scratched the surface; we haven't even described some of the bosses, radical and innovative game mechanics, or other features that make this title a fitting conclusion to one of the best franchises in gaming."

Have you noticed IGN's Jeff wrote 4 PAGES of preview without mentioning any negative points? probably because there aren't any. Usually, previews contains something like "Although the game at some point suffered from frame drops, hopefully the final version will have it fixed" or "Sudden loss of textures and sometimes slow loading of textures" something like that.
Hell, GTAIV already has its own problems on both consoles. PS3 version having colors problems and the 360 version having aliasing problems.
MGS4's previews are flawless.
Enough with the previews, I can go forever. But clearly, MGS4 is the perfect game, it's complete and has all the perfect aspects of a video game that makes that game PERFECT!
Please, when you want to judge a game and say that a game is better or less fun or isn't good, please kindly provide reasons as above and don't just throw words because you feel it's right. I kinda proved my point with my post. Thank you.
One more thing, do some research on Hideo Kojima and you might solve this topic's problem.
Nice opinion. Even when rushing through the game it will take more then 4 hours. The first time on medium difficulty takes around 10 hours. On hard it takes 12-15 for the average player. MGS4 will be a longer game so it will be around 20 and theres also online portion. MGS 4 is bigger then GTA IV will ever be.nVidiaGaMer
What are you MGS fans smoking?
GTA a is FAR FAR bigger game. MGS has small, cramped interiors while GTA has a huge city of magnificent scale. San Andreas was one of the biggest game environments ever. MGS never was known for being big.
MGS games are also somewhat short, while GTA games are far longer.
Not to mention there is a much more even gameplay/cutscene ratio in GTA.
Go ahead and enjoy MGS better, but don't try to claim it will be bigger. You will lose that argument every time.
Enough with the previews, I can go forever. But clearly, MGS4 is the perfect game, it's complete and has all the perfect aspects of a video game that makes that game PERFECT!AgentH
How the hell would you know? You haven't played it.
And also, the MGS games are far from perfect. I have no reason to believe this one will be any different.
Hah, really? I was expecting GTAIV to be in the lead by quite a bit considering it's available to a whole lot more people.InsaneBasura
Well, the poll hardly matters when GTAIV will score better and demolish MGS4 in sales.

GTA stories SUCK.
GTA graphics SUCK.
SOUND quality and music? no comment.
and the damn characters?? hold on, x was in 1, y was in 2, h was in 3 and now Niko is in 4...!
Plz quit and stop it.

Perhaps, but MGS this time will have rather free-roaming lands. It's like Crysis, you have an objective and you can get there how you feel like.

Actually, the stories are improved in this version according to previews, the sound has always been good..perhaps not the best soundtrack ever but good. Graphics perhaps MGS4 might win, but you have to consider GTA has a large scope.

That's an appeal to authority. You have to play it for yourself to know it is perfect.
GTA's graphics are not the best, but they are artistically pleasing. Vice City was a gorgeous metropolis rife with 80's atmosphere.
GTA's story presents a humorous outlook on pop culture.
GTA's radio stations were brilliant.
Not everybody likes MGS's story. I like it, but others think it is overwrought.
GTA has a larger sense of scale.
MGS is a game where the player is in the passenger seat. It is a passive game.
GTA is a game where the player is in the driver seat. It is an active game.
That is the difference and that is why GTA is more popular and gets more critical aclaim.

I'm sure the new MGS will have an improved sense of scale (and will rock), but I doubt it will match that of GTA.
The design of GTA is just inherently bigger. It comes with the territory.

Bolded parts: Both of them are passive storywise, you watch the story and can't influence.
Underlined parts: They went for a realistic style this time
Italic parts: Preference, GTA story is alot of stereotypes that don't appeal to everyone. Neither does MGS story.
Bolded parts: Both of them are passive storywise, you watch the story and can't influence.Pietrooper
The difference here is the cutscene/gameplay ratios. GTA's cutscenes are extremely short. The game is about doing, whereas MGS is more about observing.
If you took GTA's cutscenes away from it, it would have a minimal effect on the game. If you took MGS's cutscenes away, the game would fall apart.

I'm aware of that. I think MGS has the best story in the biz. I just wanted to point out to a certain poster that the stories are so very different that it becomes largely subjective.

Perhaps, but then you wouldn't have an argueable story in either, anyway gameplay has always been solid in MGS.

Perhaps it's me, but it's not quite Gears of War or Uncharted level, but it's freeroaming so that kinda lets it go free.

Yes, MGS has solid gameplay. It's clever and varied, but there's simply not enough of it to stand on its own without the cutscenes.
Also, its counter-intuitive controls and the speed of the game makes it less thrilling than GTA. At times it can seem sluggish.

It's not that technically impressive at all and MGS is definitely stronger in that department, but it's art style is inspired as usual.
R* can construct a stunning city just by being clever and subtle with details.

If you carefully read what I posted above(the long post) you will know by now that GTAIV fails in the other aspects of a video game. MGS4 on the other hand is perfect because every aspect in the GAME is being worked on PERFECTLY well, according to the latest previews! IGN today even posted a Q & A article concerning MGS4 which proves what I am saying to be correct. You my friend should know that GTAIV doesn't deliver everything at all, I mean how is the game going to appeal to graphics whores or mind blowing story lovers!? I hope you understand what I am exactly saying, MGS4 is offering the best for every whore! GTAIV however is only offering awesome gameplay, which ain't bad, but that's not enough to call it bigger than MGS4 or even a perfect game. In my previous post I have given examples of how a video game could be dubbed a "perfect" game. You can't just throw words and names without actually proving your point man, and you need to give justice to everything when describing a game or comparing a game to another.
OK, as a MGS fan this is ridiculous the GTA series is way a head and in terms of sell GTA will sell better not just because it is multi but it is a bigger franchise.
But in terms of score here in GS I think they both will score 9.5.

that bold font is annoying, if you love the game so much thats fine, good for you but in the end you will have to accept that other people fell differnetly about differnt games, GTA and MGS4 are so differnt from one another its like comparing chess to pacman.
but if you must: the GTA series has always outsold and outscored the MGS series, as such the game has a larger pedagree then MGS4, and as far as graphics go, crysis still looks far better then MGS4, so thats not much to bragabout, the game will rock, but to call it PERFECT is alittle overeaching, it may be you opinion, but its far to optomistic.

MGS4's previews are flawless.Enough with the previews, I can go forever.
Thank you.
One more thing, do some research on Hideo Kojima and you might solve this topic's problem.AgentH
Very precise and informative post...
But how can a game be perfect if they are not a fan of Stealth action? If this was posted in a "logical topic" such as MG vs. Splinter Cell then it would have merit.
At the end of the day the topic is about two games that have as much similarities as HALO 3 and GT5P...because in Halo 3 you get to drive ...
good to see you are a fan and will enjoy MGS4, but you have to be a fan to do so....
[QUOTE="AgentH"]Let me put it for you this way:
A game is considered to be 100% PERFECT when the game's aspects are each perfect and flawless.
The game's aspects are as follows:
1) Gameplay
2) Storyline
3) Graphics
4) Sound/Music
5) CharactersGTA games ONLY succeed in the first one which is "The gameplay" and which is a game's main aspect and the major part, but still lacks the other 4 aspects, not perfect unfortunately.

I'm sorry, but this is just a bad excuse for a rant about how MGS4 is going to be perfect. You're obviously a fanboy and waste my time with a mere sentence about GTA4 and a whole essay about how MGS4 is awesome. Biased much?
