MGS4 sales plummet

Apparently MGS4 has totally dropped off the sales radar - just as I predicted it would many months ago. It turns out MGS4 isn't the strong seller everyone thought it would be, and isn't pushing as many PS3 units as some in SW said it would. Is it a game for the hardcore? Some people I know that love the series couldn't even bring themselves to finish it - did Konami alienate some of his fanbase with MGS4? If not why do you think the sales have totally dropped off?

EDIT: How did the game alienate the fanbase? It's just as enjoyable as the others. I don't see how you could enjoy the others and not enjoy this one.

well i'm going overboard saying hate, but they didn't want to play it any more after hitting the second cutscene. he was really excited for it too, but w/e. sales are showing that it isn't the runaway hit they hoped it would be.

4 million is sold to stores. nobody knows exactly how many copies have been sold, but keep in mind many people are picking up the bundle, so that kinda cancels out the road you're going down to some extent.

ugh. nice try but no. you can keep posting your amazon disclaimer links but you're just kinda losing credit. what does that mean that there are limited quantities of a special edition bundle? how does that even start to help your argument in the slightest?

people buying MGS4 now are probably buying it with the bundles.....and it's not really surprising that the game's sales were top heavy when most of the PS3 audience is hardcore and was just foaming at the mouth for the gameMikeE21286

No. The word "hit" has nothing to do with sales. The word "hit" has to do with quality. Sales do not equal how much quality a game has as many people try to make you believe. Ok maybe the word "hit" does have alot to do with sales but how about you use another word like "quality" instead. Also, the game is still in big demand as it seems from some guy above. And i believe him in a way because just before MGS4 was released the amount of preorders had crashed amazon. I mean really, every person who preordered MGS4 from amazon at that time couldn't have been one of us gamers that discuss games on forums, in fact i know they all weren't because that's just insane and alot of them were also probably just MGS fans who were thinking "Hey, look another MGS game. What a great series. I think i'll preorder it.

people come here to debate, but you and others make it life and death. relax man, MGS4 is a great game, and if it dosen't sell as well which Konami think it did, then oh well. Atleast Kojima Productions put out a great game. As for your friends..LOL MGS4 has a huge amount of cut scenes, great gameplay.

Um.. the game came out over 2 months ago.. of course sales have slowed down, but tc to say that it isnt a system seller and that it didnt move many ps3s is just misinformed and you obviously not paying attention to kotaku or any reputable website. It sold 70k+ ps3's on the first day in the US alone.

Its well known that most video games sell the most copies during the first week or two, and then sales usually drop dramatically. I like how the tc is trying to use this as pwnage but true gamers know this game moved systems and this is how the gaming economy works. Accept the fact that unless you own a ps3 you can't play it and quit trying to to start stuff.

EDIT: I never saw any cow saying it was going to sell 5 million UNITS (consoles) btw.. maybe 5 million COPIES (of the game).

There was the motorstorm bundle before it, if people wanted it they would have bought it then. But most waited for MGS4 and the ps3. BC PS3 could have been bought before MGS4 bundle.

not really. There are other things youo have to fatro in to that, with the userbase and the type of season it came out in. A game coming out during the summer wouldn't do as well as it would have if it actaully released during the hoilday season.

Hasn;t it sold over 2 mil anyway?? Thats rather quite impressive if you ask me.

Halo came out in September and remained in the top 10 for months. MGS only managed to be in the top 10 for one month. Not a very popular game.

why is every cow saying that mgs4 sold 4 million copies? IT DIDN'T!!! it SHIPPED 4 million copies. no one knows the actual sales figures. btw, if it did indeed sell 4 million copies ww as all of you cows say, then why isn't it in the top 5 best selling console games of the year? number five sold only 3.4 million units worldwide while number 4 sold 3.6 million. seems like mgs4 never sold 4 million.

-A sequel to an intricately and confusingly narrative cult series (if a particularly large cult following)

-Still $60 in the US

-Only a couple months old

What exactly were you expecting? I suggest you approach the merits or lack thereof of the game before you cite sales statistics. Is MGS4 the best game of all time? It's purely a matter of taste, and it may or may not have the mass appeal of a game like GTA or even Resistance. Does it look better than any game, current or upcoming, on the XBox360? There's room for preferential differences (involving stylistic choices), but from a purely technical standpoint, absolutely. Old Snake looks a lot smoother and more detailed than your graphics posterchild Marcus Fenix, even in his upcoming installment. Expect more sales during the holiday season (increased game AND console sales, in addition to a strong lineup for PS3), and after a price drop. Other than that, I can't say much. Get over your console and the console war in general and stop propagating misinformation because you're in love with a piece of plastic.

The logical explanation is that a lot of casuals got this game based on hype, went "WTF IS GOING ON" , then told everyone not to buy it because they got totally confused.
