That's a pretty dang sad year, considering the "great" titles they had this year. Apparently, if you just release a whole bunch of great titles toward one audience, it's not going to do anything to expand that audience. Whodathunkit?

If they want to ship more than 7 million 360s next year, they had better get some variety in their lineup. As it is, the 360 is a strong shooter console, but relatively weak in every other area.

Those are good numbers for Halo 3, considering that its already done better than Halo 1, and it will likely pass Halo 2 before the summer.

I can't believe there are that many copies of Halo 3 out there to be purchased. That number blows my mind. It's only been out 3.5 months.

By the way, you can still link in Mozilla. I'm using Firefox as we speak.

To create a link, simply highlight the text you want to become a URL, right click it, and select "Insert/Edit Link" from the resulting pop-up menu.

It also has 12 months on the other consoles. Of course it will have the best line-up and the most variety. Even the Dreamcast had the best line-up and the most variety when it was released.... but that didn't work out so well, did it.

What I'm saying is that the 360 has a relatively weak line-up, considering the fact that people already know that greatness can be acheived (think PS2). The 360 is not a super-machine. It's a decent console with a great shooter line-up (by console standards).

I cant believe those Halo 3 numbers, unless they are shipped, because i see copies of the game EVERYWHERE. Honestly, that would be more sold than both H1 and H2... generally sequels sell WORSE than the predescor.

You don't need to be a casual game to sell well on the 360.... 360 owners eat up games like no tomorrow. Theres something like 30 1million+ sellers on a console that is barely 2 years old, that is amazing!

I would say the Wii can't be judged on the same scale, because it's not trying to do the same thing. For what the Wii is trying to do, I would give it a B so far. It's not absolutely incredible, but it's most certainly not bad. It gave a few of the best games this year, and it showed that its controller works well (MP3, MoHH2, RE4: Wii).

The PS3 had a bad year. It did nothing special whatsoever this year. All of its big games disappointed, and while some were good, it did not have a GREAT game this year besides CoD4. I would give the PS3's first year a D.

The great thing about both of consoles though is that they still havea chance to improve their scores, as they are just 13 months into their lifecycles. The 360 has spent 25 months shaping itself into what it is right now, and its current audience seems to be reaching a saturation point. The 360 has turned itself into "the Halo machine," and it will take a bunch of effort to break that perception, and I honestly don't think it's going to happen.

The 360 is decent. The Wii, by its standards, is good. The PS3, at this point in time, is poor.

You can say that. You'd just be incorrect. And comparing the 360 with the Dreamcast is just tired. The 360 is nothing like the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast didn't have a 8 million user online cash cow fattening Sega's pockets. Nor did Sega (Dreamcast) have a good relationship with EA who at the time had Madden on the PS2.

Lets talk about Madden. What system sold the most copies of Madden in '07? The 360. The best version in '07? The 360.

Dreamcast what?

what are you talking about?

you're trying to put the wii in some other playing field to make it look better. the wii has the LEAST amoutn of AA/AAA games. Its a gaming machine.

And it doesnt matter if you think the 360 is seen as a halo machine, doesnt change the fact that it has the highest amount of AAA/AA games. thats a fact.

If the 360 is "decent" and has the best/most games, then the wii must be a steming pile of turd at the rate its going, because even the ps3 has a larger quantity of good games, which you magically gave a D.

gamesfan87

Quite seriously, it needs something different. It needs something to set itself apart from the everyday, run-of-the-mill console. Its software is not good enough to do that, obviously, because it hasn't done that yet. So, I would say that it needs to expand its audience by introducing new types of software. It doesn't have to invent anything, but it just has to establish itself as a good console for a ton of different genres, and at this point, it is not strongly represented by any genre except shooters. Does it have some good JRPGs? Yes. But is it a JRPG gamer's paradise? No. Does it have some good racers? Yes. But it's not a racer's paradise either. The point is that it's just an updated Xbox. It's got the same games targeted at the same audience, and it is not going to move anywhere by doing that.

You seem to be pro-wii so let me ask you this.

Is the wii a Shooters poaradise? nope

racers? nada

RPGs? hell no

platformers? one, an excellent one.

action games? nope.

Seriously, all your arguments can be flipped on their heads way too easily :?

And you seem to be so worried about the 360's sales improvement while we are just trying to talk games.

So then mr genius tell us what 360 needs that the Wii and PS3 has

i_like_pizza

It's really sad how you try so hard not to give the 360 any credit at all.

[QUOTE="JPOBS"]if the 360 is a decent console, are the other two sub-par?
JPOBS

The PS3, at this point in time, is poor.

what are you talking about?

you're trying to put the wii in some other playing field to make it look better. the wii has the LEAST amoutn of AA/AAA games.

What are YOU talking about?

Is Wii Sports built to get AAA scores from reviewers? Is it built to dazzle you with its great graphics and intense story? No! It's built to be pure fun, and it succeeds at that better than any game has in the past 15 years. Wii Sports is the reason to own a Wii, but that's not even a "AAA" title.

The Wii isn't the same kind of thing that you've been playing for the past 20 years. It does offer some of the same types of games with a little different twist, such as SMG, but some of its games just simply couldn't have been done before in the same way, like Zack and Wiki. The Wii is not just a 360 with worse graphics. It's not even in the same ballpark. It's as different from the 360 and PS3 as the DS is from the 360 and PS3. Just because the Wii connect to a TV and plays games doesn't make it the same kind of thing. Are you gonna call those plug-and-play combos a "game console" because they play the same way as a 360 or PS3? Of course not. They're not meant to do the same thing.

This thread was started with a statement of MS sales. I'm not talking about their library as if they're lacking quality games. I'm talking about their library lacking DEPTH of quality. The 360 will NEVER be a market leader if its current trend continues. There are only so many shooter fans in the world, and then the well runs dry.

And the PS3 and 360 "quality" games are made up of the same kinds of things that could have been done last generation. That's why I, and obviously many other discontented gamers, couldn't care less for the newer "updates" of these games. I don't understand why you think the 360 has such an amazing lineup.

17.7m Shipped...ouch....so they only managed to ship 7.3m units this year.

I'd say that's pretty weak...but then again considering this year they had competition...meh could have been better.

Impressive HAlo 3 numbers though

I can't believe there are that many copies of Halo 3 out there to be purchased. That number blows my mind. It's only been out 3.5 months.Dreams-Visions

With all the hype surrounding the game, i would be suprised if the game didnt move as money copies. And the fact that its an enjoyable game doesnt hurt either :P

Heil68

the 360 has less than 15% of its ENTIRE game catalog that is a FPS :|

Of its top 10 rated games, how many do you think are shooters?

The 360 has shooters, sports games, and driving games. Check its top games. I'm not just making this up.

this post is so ridiculous i dont think i'll bother responding to it.

And if I do, you'll just come up with more far fetched reasons as to why the wii isnt in the same and why it totally rocks and the 360 and ps3 dont.

So take this as me bowing out of the argument, hope it helps you sleep better.

FPS is my favorite genre. I like the 360. I really do. I played Halo 3 till 6:00 AM last night/morning. It's a fine shooter console (although I do enjoy my PC shooters more). But besides that, it doesn't have anything to offer my that my PS2 can't do better. I was a late PS2 adopter, and I could catch up on well over a hundred games if I felt like it before I would even consider touching a 360 for them.

It most certainly does help me sleep better.

Whatever. If you think Wii Sports was built to be an epic powerhouse like Mass Effect, you're more delusional than I am.

Wii Sports is the best and most impactful game of this console generation. Moreso than SMG, Halo 3, Gears of War, or anything else you can name.

To belittle that is nothing short of foolish.

Hahaha.

If your console's library can't compete, just lower the standards! Works like a charm.

Oh, it's most certainly not "lowered." Does no one understand what "different" means?

You'd call me crazy for saying I'd rather play Wii Sports than Super Mario Galaxy, Crysis, Half-Life 2, or any other game... but can't you see that game is nowhere near being similar to anything else you're used to experiencing? It's just meant to be pure fun... and it is.
