I know this sounds nitpicky, but does anyone else find it strange that Microsoft went through all the work of redesigning the Xbox 360 and it STILL has an old fashioned tray-loading disc drive? The Xbox 360 was the only console this gen to use one, and you'd think with them going through all the work of re-designing the system they'd bother to update the disc tray and replace it with a more modern slot drive like the PS3 and Wii have. I mean come on Microsoft, this is the 2010's, not the early 2000's!

I'd rather have a tray drive that I know I can get a disc out of than a slot drive where it's going to be exceptionally difficult if the worst happens...

it seems pretty pointless on a consumer level really. especially without a price change... it looks pretty much the same size judging from the engadget unpacking, the only real draw is the wifi. i guess it's cool for them with arcades looking to upgrade or those looking for a new console. like the ps3 slim i definitely wouldn't bother selling my previous console for it.

as for the disk tray i don't see the problem really.

How is does this affect you, or pretty much anyone in anyway. Does sucking rather than putting it in have any difference to you (no sexual pun intended)?

Not only does this sound nitpicky, your complaint is nitpicky. Disc trays are still the most common so I don't see how they're "old-fashioned" either.

Slot drives are horrible. If a disc gets stuck in a tray, you can pry it open. If a disc gets stuck in a slot drive, have fun! BTW, this is nitpicking to the extreme. Cows are just picking straws now

Which begs the question. How do you dislodge a disc stuck in a dead slot drive? At least with tray drives, a paperclip usually provides the means to manually eject the tray.

agree with TC.

the new drives on the Wii/ PS3 are cool.

but MS probably wanted to keep console costs down so we get the old drive.

you still have to actually GET UP and insert a disc on all 3 systems.

so theres that....

I think it stabilises the disc better so there is less of a chance to scratch it.

Or something... Im not that big a fan of either disc loading system TBH :D

I don't care what kind of tray, I'm more curious if they fixed their little hardware problems, such as RROD, E74, and DRE.

Trays are less reliable(break easier) and can cause disc scratching. Its really not a big deal and who cares but a slot drive is a better option. If your going to redesign your system, why not put in a slot drive? Oh, i know why. It cost a little more money and we are talking about MS here.

I prefer tray drives. Slots don't offer me any benefit but I feel like if the tray/slot mechanism breaks, I can force games in and out of my system with a tray. With a slot the game is stuck in there.

Whoever says that MS is not in fault for making a faulty tray is in denial. There's a reason why many machines don't cause the same problems, you could design them better.

no it's not.

it's their fault for buying faulty trays.

MS doesn't make that component.

Did they move the power brick into the case? If so then I'd consider that fairly impressive.

Even though the slim has less features than the original PS3 it still has more than 360. The new 360 looks like a wanna-be PS3

I guess the safest option is the old Saturn,/PS/DC flip mechanism – never got any problems with discs stuck back in the ol' days. I guess it's a little passé though…
