Please note the article said introduce a new system late 08 or at CES 09. It didn't say anything about the system going on sale. New systems are generally introduced about 2 years before they go on sale. This would put the next system in 2010 or 2011. That's five to six years after the start of this gen and is perfectly in keeping with the average console life cycle.

well two things make me love this idea:

1) we only live once, i'd rather by playing with bleeding edge technology every 2-3 years instead of 5-10 like Sony wants to.

2) i'm used to upgrading my PC ever couple of years, why the hell would I care if I had to buy a new console every 2-3?

so yeah, i really really hope MS does this. might finally kill Sony off too :)

5 years inbetween consoles is normal. Lets not forget that the 360 has been out since 2005. 2010 is reasonable for the next console.

The 360 will be 5-6 years old. That's the age of the average console when it's successor is released. Is it MS's fault that Sony and Nintendo showed up late to this gen? I don't think it will affect the WIi all that much, but sucks to be Sony. However that's what they get for delaying their system for so long. The business world doesn't stop just because you're not ready for the next step.

oh teamxobx has this up also. but on teamxbox it says, that a Toshiba spokesman said MS and Toshiba are creating a xbox 360 with hd-dvd. this is being maked to rival the ps3 as being a blu ray player, which has caused it to sell more as a player then a gaming machine. so appearently MS and Toshiba are going to relelase a xbox 360 OR it would be under the toshiba name, it would be a entertainment hub, it would allow the use of hd-dvd, hdmi with full 1080p support. theres also considering adding a dual hdtv tuner.

but remember this is to rival against the ps3 as a blu ray player.

messed up? i said 2-3 years, yes.. i'd like my console to be at the same level (relatively) that my PC is. towards the end of console generations PC's just totally destroy them. i have money - lots - so i'd really like this to happen.

sony i do want out of the console business. the way they operated in the 90s made me hate them with a passion. they ran some very good companies in to the ground, made deals and broke them time and time again. they're arrogant this gen, they're misguided, dishonest to consumers.

why wouldn't i want to see them hit rock bottom? maybe you haven't been around long enough to know how terrible of a company they are. don't get me wrong, they've done some good things for gaming, but at the expense of many others.

and it's not like i love microsoft, i just like them because they have a chance to hit Sony hard and make them hurt :) like Sony did to many devs and console manufacturers in the past.

it's called JUST DESSERTS.

360 is my last MS console. They got it right this time and to abandon it before it starts profiting big time is just pure stupidity.

The OG Xbox was capable to perform very well in terms of software. Look at GoWII on PS2. That game looks absolutely amazing on the old hardware of the PS2. Imagine GoWII using the full power of the OG Xbox.

MS will want to get out first again, but they won't do it too early because its hard to say "buy our console its the best" whilst simultaneously saying "something way better coming soon!".

I don't think M$ should do this, but if it's 100% XBox 360 compliant, then it shouldn't hurt M$. They may want to wait until the end of 2009 to do this. Then they can release it for $400 or less. By then the XBox 360 premium will be under $200. I don't see a LOT of people running out to get this though unless some of the game produce will utilize the HD-DVD. Otherwise, I would rather just get a quality dual players that plays Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

The development process takes far longer than 2/3 years, thats simply them gathering partners for the next console they might announce it but I doubt an actual console will be ready till 2010-11.

MS's still needs to make money on the 360! 12 million users? They need more than double that, and then what is the point? They make money off of software, so why introduce more hardware when it will take years to build back up again?

Well said, Bio. The original Xbox had alot more potential to be tapped, yet what did MS do? They completely abandoned it and it's user base. I realize that it was because they lost their asses on the Xbox, but still, they are not making a profit on the 360 either.

Wait and see here in a couple of years, they will probably do the same thing with the 360, leaving it to to die off as they did the original Xbox in favor of releasing a new one. In which case, they will be screwing over their user base yet again. In fact, that is probably a plan that is already in place.

well both you babies can go home and cry on your xbox.

i'll be in line waiting for the next great line-up of games for the next generation xbox, because they certainly haven't let me down this gen, apart from some hardware woes :) but i'm not baby. i can take a 3 year warranty.

Yep, you will be in line, blindfolded with a fistfull of dollars begging them to take more of your money after abandoning their previous console early that you also spent money on. As P.T. Barnum said himself....their is a sucker born every minute.;)

It takes more than 2-3 years to get everything out of a console, and any gamer who is also a smart consumer knows this. Most people do not want to have to fork out 400.00-600.00 for a new console every 3-4 years. It should be every 5-7 in order to get everything out of a console that can be gotten out of it.

By the way, I own a PS3 and a 360, as does Bioshockownz. I damn sure am not crying over spilled milk. I just do not like to be taken advantage of as a consumer, and as a gamer. I am sorry that you find the prospect of having a console that you put alot of money into being abandoned early as not being that big of a deal. Some of us actually care how we spend our hard earned dollars.

Not to mention that as for myself, I was speaking hypothetically about a "new" console. But the possibility of Microsoft releasing just another upgraded version of the 360 is still a slap to the early adopters face. Not to mention that it is completely uncalled for. But, by all means, if you want to buy every version of the 360 that they plan on releasing, then go right ahead and burn your money. Nobody is stopping you, lol.

First off, i think people are correct when saying this is the rumor of a X360 with built-in HD-DVD. And even if it is, there's no 0wnage...They'll market it as a media hub to the "high end" consumers. Toshiba wants to battle BD & what better way to get more players out there than to have the X360 come equipped with it? They're even releasing a player by years end that is under $200. I'll bet my dollar to your donut, this new skustill wont play games on HD-DVD ;)

As far as there being a new system, people have already stated what i believe....MS will show the system in its prelimanary stages sometime in 2009, but it wont hit retail til 2010-2011. And unlike some other people around here, i dont want Sony to fail, but they're going to take a major blow from MS when their new system drops. There's no way Sony will be ready! They've poured too many resources into PS3 & it arrived late. Sony will be playing catch up from now on, IMO

If this is true, I'm going to be furious. I love my Xbox, but I haven't bought a new game for it since 2004. I picked up some used games here and there, but when the 360 was announced it was all but abandoned.

If the same things happens to the 360, I will not buy the new Xbox. Not in a million years.

it's funny you said that because I am a developer (C#.net),and I mainly work on M$ platforms. M$ renews its products every 3-4 years. SQL server 2005 for example was release in late 04 and now we going to see a SQL server 2008, lol that's 3 years. It's totally rediculous. I am working on my MCPD(EA) certification which is based on the 2.0 framework (this framwork was a 2005 release) and now they're on framework 3.5. The second you get familiar with a product they have, the next second a new product is coming out, and because I am a consultant I need to know the new features in the new product so I can sell it to the customer. Get used to it!! that's how M$ works, not to mention how they always release early on all of their products only to have "service packs" fix the issues later (does that remind you of the 360 or what? released the console with hardware problems, but they trying to fix it later ). That's pretty much why I don't support the 360. I have an awesome gaming PC and a PS3 which to me seems to be the best gaming combo. I can't stand what M$ does sometimes. If this news is true, I think Gamers should boycott them. WARNING to ever gamer out there, If M$ domniates the gaming Market, I believe that we will see crappier games with a new hardware release every 3-4 years, and that's coming from a guy that works on M$ products.

They don't want to do this.....I think they believe they have to in order to spur up demand again to compete with the Wii (that is if this ends up being true). Remember, the longer a console lasts the more money a company makes. They lose money at the beginning on hardware (and try to make up for it with software sales). At the end they are making money on their console, and the software. The end of a consoles life span is the sweet spot for a company in terms of profit on it. Just look at the PS2, this is why Sony is still rockin' n rollin.

I don't understand why they would do this. Not a smart decision for busniess.dream431ca

not at all. this should be seriously annoying for gamers. pay $$$$ for a new console every 4 years is rediculous IMO.

Do we need better graphics that much?

I'm happy to have choose my BFG 8800 gtx OC over any console still traped into DX9.

...? i dont understand the logica_chalz

this is from my previous post. maybe you will understand the logic of this

it's funny you said that because I am a developer (C#.net),and I mainly work on M$ platforms. Get used to it!! that's how M$ works, not to mention how they always release early on all of their products only to have "service packs" fix the issues later (does that remind you of the 360 or what? released the console with hardware problems, but they trying to fix it later :lol.
