He makes games, he doesn't research other's games.

I wonder how much he even plays his own games.

Well Reggie pwnd him at Wii Fit at E3, I'd say he doesn't play them a lot, or Reggie is just a beast.

Maybe he got his idea form this:

These are all screenshots from Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando.

Video_Game_King

Or maybe from prior experiments that culminated in the game itself, beginning after the production of Super Mario 64?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcm8acmjclM

the idea for sphere like levelsis even older than that.

I always enjoyed the Jak series quite a level above the R&C series. They may feel like the same genre, but somehow, the Jak games always felt like AAA games to me.

Regardless, Miyamato is a genius videogame creator : all his ideas are more or less his own whim, and they work!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but R&C is made by American devs, right? The game may not have been pushed very hard in Japan and may not have been successful. Meaning Miyamoto may not have heard of it for that reason.

His job isn't researching games. Especially average ones at that.

R&C isn't avergae. Average game gets 6.5 to 7.5. R&C is in between AA and AAA. Myamoto is full of himself and issomanic too . Also lemmings shouldn't even be talking about R&C because they dont have anything that comes to R&C.

Insomniac Games said a while back that it was "flattered" that the spherical worlds of Mario Galaxy were inspired by Ratchet and Clank.

Official Nintendo Magazine UK asked the father of Mario what he thought about Insomiac's comments in a recent interview, to be published in the next issue (Issue 25).

Miyamoto said he was "surprised" by Insomniac's comment. "In terms of the spherical worlds and anti-gravity," he went on to explain, "we had the original idea as soon as we finished the development of Mario 64 and had been experimenting with it for many years, even on the N64."

"It's not an idea we got from anywhere else," adds Miyamoto, before adding: "I'm sorry but I have to admit that I've never seen the game in question. Is it a PC game?"

I believe him that he doesn't even know about his competitors.

The games he makes will make someone think that he doesn't even know what a game is.

Like Wii Fit.

He should play the game Ratchet and Clank at least.

Sorry, but I just wanted to point out something I posted earlier that was deleted and clarify my statement. Might actually educate whoever originally deleted it too, but I wouldn't be surprised if I came back to find another red exclamation on my messages or something worse.

It's not surprising that a Japanese designer would have never heard of an american game developed and produced by an american company. The Japanese are (insert naughty modded word here that the mod thinks is a generalizing statement defaming a foreign group of people when in fact the above link points to the contrary). This could also explain why they are not interested in the Xbox 360.Spindoc

Not surprising to me. I doubt Miyamoto gets around to playing/reading about a lot of games. He's a busy guy, and the games that he does play are simply played for fun. He's the kind of guy who enjoys Wii Sports more than he would ever enjoy BioShock.

People should probably realize that Shiggy in all most likely cases doesn't care what the competition does. All those years when Sonic went head to head with Mario did Shiggy one time take anything from Sega Sonic to a game changing effect?

Shiggy doesn't care about what everyone else does. His hand in the creation of the Wii is proof of that. He only cares about his vision. His vision doesn't involve others ideas it involves things more like walking in his Garden and um wierd crap like that.

Blackbond

That's true. He's also admitted in the past that he doesn't really play video games, I believe. Just creates them.

I didn't know R&C existed until I came here actually. It was around April when someone said Mario Galaxy looked better than R&C (funny thread).Eponique

Yeah I found out about it in that time period too.

But I've always prefered Nintendo consoles so I haven't paid much attention to Sony's crap.

I'd say it's more likely he's been condescending. Notice how he asks if it's on PC? That's a system virtually non-existent in mainstream Japanese gaming.

Of course it's always possible he legitmately didn't know.

This is quite the lol. R&C has got nothing on ANY Mario game from the main series (Sunshine Included, SS:LL not Doki Doki Panic, and not withstanding Mario Hotel and all the crap spin offs (Especially the CD-i)).

Hell Jak1 is better than R&C:TOD. I love Jak and Daxter, those games are decent platformers, still not a Mario but meh.

I think Miyamoto is pretty sheltered from the rest of the gaming world. A bit like Team ICO who apparently had played barely any games before they made ICO.

However, he can say "lol, I dont know them" and "I had this idea in N64 days" as much as he wants. The fact is Insomniac produced and delivered the idea of spherical worlds in a platformer long before Miyamoto did. Therefore they should be credited with the creation of the idea. Still, they never really dared to take it as far as Miyamoto did.

I'm surprised he doesn't know... or does he just pretend he doesn't?

Either way... SMG is still the best of its genre. R&C is too much of a shooting game rather then a real platformer.

Didn't Nintendo start working on Mario 128 before Sunshine so I don't think Ratchet and Clank was even out then. Nintendo tried so many things with the next console Mario game which was later released Super Mario Galaxy.
