Kratos was a great character until they tried to add dimensions to his personality. His never hesitate, if it moves kill it, no remorse-attitude worked perfectly in GOW1-2. In three some genius decided to introduce Pandora . I voted Freeman.Sushiglutton
Actually, Kratos always sucked in terms of characterization (IMO). The only thing that made him remotely appealing was that you could do awful, AWFUL things to people with him. But in the context of story, he was just another stereotypical angry action hero with a stick up his ***.

I mean I can't deny he was a stereotype (even though I don't kno any character that uses this exact combination), but for me the execution of this stereotype was top notch. Like u said the brutal animations were certainly an important part of it, but also voice acting, dialogue and the way he "approached problems". I can't come up with any character like this I liked as much (movies or games). Clearly Kratos character is a huge part of the succes for the GOW-franchise, no?

The most over rated character is well no-one, there is a reason each and every character of those listed is praised. There is only one thing overrated in this world, and that is the word overrated itself.

A popular character I dislike strongly is Nathan Drake, he is not overrated. It is just that I dont like him.

Master Chief.

If you're going to give your character independence outside of player control, his own voice and personality....
Then actually do it well instead of a mute, generic soldier, who is completely indistinguishable from any other mute military type, apart from the combat armour.

Honestly, what distinguishes his character against every other game or popular fiction character, even action, other than the iconic armour?

Absolutely nothing.

Which is why Freeman actually gets by, he is a narrative device. That's it, he doesn't even cut it as a proper 'character'.

Otherwise Kratos is a hate machine since the first GoW, which suits the tone of the game tbh, and Snake's fine, I'm far more preferential to Big Boss however.

Nathan Drake was mentioned above me, I can agree with that. He is a decent protagonist, however just as predictable as any other action hero dervived from 'Boys Own' action fiction; Indiana Jones being the best example. He is no Malcom Reyonalds, and the impression is there that Naughty Dog really want him to be.

Not bad, overrated, for sure.

Definitely Nathan Drake.

Don't get me wrong. He's not a bad character, but he's not a great one either. He's a typical handsome hero type who spouts out the occasional smart ass, just-slightly-witty, but not terribly interesting comment. Not to mention that his character design is not particularly distinctive. Is there any reason I'm supposed to think he's anything more than what I described?

I honestly think that folks would not overrate this character if he didn't belong to a game as great as Uncharted 2. Put him in a lesser game and I think he would not get praised the way he does.

Master Chief, Gordon Freeman (an avatar, not a character), Kratos (crybaby hiding behind a "badass" self-inposed exterior appearance), Samus (no personality, only sex appeal) and Marcus Fenix (stolen from StarCraft). The worst "characters" I've ever encountered in games.

I'm an Altair fan as well. Ezio had no "mystery" about him. He was overly flamboyant and talked *way* too much.

Also, in addition to Nathan Drake, I have to say Elana and Chloe in terms of looks.

WTF is supposed to be hot about either of these characters?

Elana honestly looks kind of masculine and is just not very pretty at all.

I mean, she's not ugly exactly, but she's as Plain Jane as they come.

And then Chloe:Is it possible for her face to look any weirder than it does?

I hear both of these women referred to as hot and it just boggles my mind.

Gordon Freeman. Not sure why people like him, he looks like a massive nerd.

Grawse
He killed thousands of Combine soldiers and fought through an entire planet of aliens. Oh, and did I mention that he's a projection of you in the game world?

I think Nathan Drake is great for three reasons; he is genuine, not pretentious & his personality is rather humble which lets the great gallery of side characters shine. And obviously he got humour so I don't think he's overrated at all.

IMO it was not how often he talked but what he had to say, it was alway like, with confused face & ugly stereotypical italian accent: hmm molto bene, Im a badass, Im naive, I like girls .

I think his dislike for Drake stems mostly from the fact that alot of people like him. I actually find him disharming in a charming and humble way. As for his rant on the female characters, thats probably an attack on Naughty Dog....

Have you ever considered that maybe you're, you know..... gay I mean, they are video game characters, so I'm not going to say something stupid like 'I'd tap that', but considering they're modelled after actresses.... very attractive actresses..... yeah....

Man, I didn't know I would make people so mad with that post.

I mean, really, you're going there?

And just because they've modeled after attractive actresses don't mean they're instantly attractive.

I mean, I'm sure I'd find Chloe attractive if she was a real woman, but on the game. Her face is simply modeled very strangely.

It was an enjoyment to see him progress through his way to the leader of Assassin's. However that doesn't mean he's overrated. I liked Ezio. But not more than Altair. And I'm going to comment on that "stereotypical italian" comment you made.

Ahem. They're in Italy. They're supposed to be speaking Italian.

Pretty much every game character who is supposed to be a "badass" and not just as a joke.

You're not really "badass" if you're so OP that everything is incredibly easy for you but you still just act like it's a challenge.

Who actually thinks MC is a good character? The poll results are silly. Correct answer is Gordon Freeman, the blank slate mute who can hardly be considered a "character" at all.

Gordon Freeman, his character is popular because of the HL series but his character itself has no personality, you simply see the world from his perspective, that's it, heck even G-Man has more personality than Gordon Freeman and he's barely in the HL games

Kratos by a huge margin, he is represented like such a badass, but in reality, is nothing than a whiny guy with nothing better to do than being angry.

At least MC is the typical and general Space Marine and don't try to be anything else Gordon Freeman doesn't suppose to have any personality so it's ok, but yeah, Kratos for me.

I guess I can respect the lack of hyper-sexualization, but I just don't think they are very attractive just from a physical features standpoint.

Honestly, Chloe's face is just very strange. Again, it might have something to with the technology just not being able to render what they going for all that naturally, but it's just hard to look at that face and declare it hot.

Kratos, easily. He's a whiny little b**** with daddy issues. I like God of War, but God, do I hate Kratos, especially since SSM tries so hard and utterly fails (save perhaps in the original God of War) to make him a sympathetic character. Every bad thing that has ever happened to him is completely his fault, and he blames all of his problems on everyone else. And then murders them. At least in the original he had an excuse. After that, nope. I can't believe people actually think this guy is a badass.

Also, Nathan Drake, because he's a poor man's Malcom Reynolds/Indiana Jones. There's absolutely nothing special about him at all.

And Ezio, too. Altair was a far, far better character. He actually had an interesting character arc that made sense. All I want Ezio to do is shut up.

And  at people praising Freeman as a narrative device and then bashing the Chief. They do exactly the same time. Silent protagonist that the player projects on. The Chief only talks when it is necessary to advance the plot, and he only says things the player would say anyway. It's a far better system than Freeman, imo, but Valve does know how to define Freeman's character with Half-Life's supporting cast.

DarkLink77

No not at all.

Chief has a character, and a personality; Bungie very specifically removes that during gameplay. When the game breaks into cutscenes of any sort, Chief's character comes into play.

Or well, lack of character.

It's certainly not entirely projection.

Gordon Freeman is pretty pure projection, sure it's no "lost soul" from The Void, hover even the Doom Guy has more character. Irony is Half Life's narrative is light years ahead of Halo's despite the protagonist of the said game(s) actually being voiced, and having an established character.

Though you do have a point, Alyx for instance is very intentionally focused on in HL2 to drive any sense of character struggle in the narrative; something which the 'Gordon character' is completely incapable of.

DarkLink77

This, exactly. Kratos is not a badass in any sense of the word.

Hell, God of War begins with Kratos attempting to commit suicide.

First character that popped into my mind was Master Chief. Glad to see he's winning.

Absolutely nothing.

skrat_01

Well, that's the thing. The Master Chief is that iconic armor. The two are inseperable in the sense that one cannot and does not exist without the other. We never see The Master Chief outside of his armor, hell, we never even see his face. In that sense, his armor is his face. It is how he is recognized and is displayed at all times during the series. I agree with you that the Master Chief is a wholly generic character aside from his iconic looks but you really can't talk about the Master Chief and his armor as if they're separate entities. The Arbiter was a far more interesting character than the Master Chief. It's just a shame that his levels were so bloody awful in Halo 2.

I like how this thread turned into another Uncharted 2 is overrated thread in one way or another.:P Like let it go already...:? Bash Uncharted 3 instead.:P

Anyways I'm going with Gordon Freeman because of reasons posted above. I have no beef with Master Chief, Snake or anything but Freeman... Sigh.:(

I don't like Kratos either but those QTE are pretty cool.:P Either way I just think Gordon gets wayy too much praise, I can handle the Master Chief's or Kratos' but... damn.:?

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Well, I probably could have, but I didn't feel like it. :P

I don't understand why anybody can tolerate him as a protagonist.

I really liked Nathan Drake in the first Uncharted. IDK why, but in the second he just annoyed the **** out of me. So I will go with him, or Kratos. Kratos is a joke so he is almost not worth mentioning. Whinny little ****
