If you're going to give your character independence outside of player control, his own voice and personality....
Then actually do it well instead of a mute, generic soldier, who is completely indistinguishable from any other mute military type, apart from the combat armour.
Honestly, what distinguishes his character against every other game or popular fiction character, even action, other than the iconic armour?
Absolutely nothing.
Which is why Freeman actually gets by, he is a narrative device. That's it, he doesn't even cut it as a proper 'character'.
Otherwise Kratos is a hate machine since the first GoW, which suits the tone of the game tbh, and Snake's fine, I'm far more preferential to Big Boss however.
Nathan Drake was mentioned above me, I can agree with that. He is a decent protagonist, however just as predictable as any other action hero dervived from 'Boys Own' action fiction; Indiana Jones being the best example. He is no Malcom Reyonalds, and the impression is there that Naughty Dog really want him to be.
Not bad, overrated, for sure.
