Ghost from MW2
TheEpicGoat
not really, soap and price got more hype then ghost, but gaz from cod4....loved his sarcastic personality lol
Master Chief, I love Halo, but seriously, how could anyone like a generic space marine in armor with no emotions who never talks?

He was rated favorite character and the 3rd sequel is supposedly based off of him.

mainly due to the fact gaz was funny and an ass to people....it's hard to pick up unless u pay attention but he has a few funny 1 liners
point for youGordon Freeman, simply because he isn't a character at all. He's a blank slate for the player to imprint themselves on. What ever personality traits people think he has, is what ever they perceived him to possess. There are no actual scripted scenes the writers depicted him with, only how the supporting characters interact with him as seen from the players eyes, and the player fills in the blanks for how they choose to see Freeman in the situation.
And before you flame, I loved the HL games, they are brilliant and immersive experiences.

[QUOTE="nervmeister"][QUOTE="Sushiglutton"]Kratos was a great character until they tried to add dimensions to his personality. His never hesitate, if it moves kill it, no remorse-attitude worked perfectly in GOW1-2. In three some genius decided to introduce Pandora . I voted Freeman.SushigluttonActually, Kratos always sucked in terms of characterization (IMO). The only thing that made him remotely appealing was that you could do awful, AWFUL things to people with him. But in the context of story, he was just another stereotypical angry action hero with a stick up his ***. I mean I can't deny he was a stereotype (even though I don't kno any character that uses this exact combination), but for me the execution of this stereotype was top notch. Like u said the brutal animations were certainly an important part of it, but also voice acting, dialogue and the way he "approached problems". I can't come up with any character like this I liked as much (movies or games). Clearly Kratos character is a huge part of the succes for the GOW-franchise, no?Good point. But most of Kratos's "charm" comes from what he does. The same can't easily be said about what he says or how he emotes.
gordon freeman, zero personality, seriously i would rather have a conversation with the suit in crysis then him
:? The only person who you contest is overrated is John Marston. Most of the characters from Red Dead Redemption.
turtlethetaffer
Nathan Drake. He seems like a nice guy and would probably make a fine neighbor but what's so special about him?
yeah i dont know either.Gordon Freeman. Not sure why people like him, he looks like a massive nerd.
Grawse
Lol at people calling someone a nerd because he wears glasses. Is this 2nd grade? **** FOUR EYES. On a video game website no less.
PS: I pick Claptrap. I found Scooter way more hillarious.
Kratos. Why is he so loved?XenoLairBecause he is the most powerful protagonists in video game history.
Are you telling me glasses don't make you like like a nerd ? :| Glasses are fine if you're over 30... but when you're under.... :?Lol at people calling someone a nerd because he wears glasses. Is this 2nd grade? **** FOUR EYES. On a video game website no less.

I also have to agree. The games are outstanding but who wears glasses into combat?? I mean come on. In those situations you need contacts or just go without them cos they will fall off and get broken very easily
No one does, that's why he's not overrated. Seriously, some of you people are dense.[QUOTE="StealthMonkey4"]

Wow, no need to be an ass, if something is overrated, it means people have to like it to begin with...
Try harder next time.

Yeah, maybe you should try harder to form an intelligent thought next time. You just disagreed with yourself and agreed with me. Good job.I voted for Master Chief because he has a very boring personality (and because I don't like Halo, shocking, I'M BIASED), although Gordon Freeman is massively overrated too. I don't see how everyone can love a character that never speaks or is even SEEN in third-person view in the game. It's like saying the unnamed protagonist of Doom is the greatest game character ever.
Kratos and then Master Chief.
I don't understand how anybody can even think Kratos is a good excuse for a character.
Entire cast of Gears of War. The fact that even a single person finds them tolerable makes them overrated. Off that list I chose Chief since he's a very dull character without any real flaws. I mean Gordon Freeman is too, don't get me wrong, but Gordon actually has some decent relationships and has an interesting dynamic in that he's essentially a slave assassin owned by whatever the hell G-Man is.Ace6301You chose Chief essentially because you're biased and a PS3 fanboy. Prove me wrong.
[QUOTE="skrat_01"]No not at all.[QUOTE="DarkLink77"]
And  at people praising Freeman as a narrative device and then bashing the Chief. They do exactly the same time. Silent protagonist that the player projects on. The Chief only talks when it is necessary to advance the plot, and he only says things the player would say anyway. It's a far better system than Freeman, imo, but Valve does know how to define Freeman's character with Half-Life's supporting cast.
DarkLink77
Chief has a character, and a personality; Bungie very specifically removes that during gameplay. When the game breaks into cutscenes of any sort, Chief's character comes into play.
Or well, lack of character.
It's certainly not entirely projection.
Gordon Freeman is pretty pure projection, sure it's no "lost soul" from The Void, hover even the Doom Guy has more character. Irony is Half Life's narrative is light years ahead of Halo's despite the protagonist of the said game(s) actually being voiced, and having an established character.
Though you do have a point, Alyx for instance is very intentionally focused on in HL2 to drive any sense of character struggle in the narrative; something which the 'Gordon character' is completely incapable of.
The Chief doesn't really have a personality outside of the books. He can be a bit sarcastic and banter a bit with Cortana, but a large part of the Chief's character is dependent on the player's projection onto him, and the other character's reaction to him. Valve just does it better in Half-Life 2 than Bungie does in Halo, though it is worth noting that Valve stepped their game up significantly between Half-Life and Half-Life 2 in that regard, and I think Halo was an influence. Storytelling, perhaps. Halo obliterates Half-Life (and most other video game narratives, honestly) if we take the EU into account. There's just far too much of it to fit in game, though the Terminals and the like that are hidden in the games do an excellent job of advancing Halo's lore. I guarantee you that most people who bash Halo's story, even the stories in the games, don't actually know the full extent of what's going on (the Terminals add A LOT to Halo 3). But yeah, Alyx is probably the best plot device that Valve ever added to Half-Life.Indeed projection in the games is a very notable, reality is Chief is an established character, and a terrible one. Are the books better? I wouldn't doubt it whatsoever, problem is it's the games that concern me.Valve do it better, did Valve step is up because of Bungie? Well honestly that's hard to say? In what way? Cortana and Chief versus Alyx and Gordon? Possibly, the big difference being Valve are simply far better storytellers than Bungie (that being said Marathon was quite progressive). EU? The lore? Oh yes. The problem is this is science fiction universes, so we have Star Trek, Star Wars, Warhammer 40k and of course so much more in the mix... and Halo doesn't hold up nearly as strong. Is it still quite great and unique? I'd say so, even with the usual tropes like the others, like Mass Effect. My problem however is the games don't nearly explore it, it's all left in the dark and addressed outside the games. There is so much there, why waste it? The Arbiter for instance was an excellent step in the right direction to this.. and in Halo 3 Bungie turned him into a co-op bot - one of the most compelling characters, and links to the games fiction alternative to Master Chief.... and the former characters own past is also never addressed in the game despite the amazing story potential (remember the E3 Halo trailer, why wasn't this ever focused on in the game?). Instead it's anything but. Which really is a crushing shame, and hurts the games narrative severely, as well as Chief's character. Otherwise Alyx was a great plot device, though I think Valve's dependency on her character is a bit much; if she irritates you then your engagement in the plot would falter. That and the series hasn't moved beyond elaborate scripted sequences and environmental design in the series, at all.[QUOTE="tagyhag"]Gordon Freeman, sure he's not your typical marine but he's still nothing special. His silence does nothing to overcome this.
Kratos, he is not badass, he is a suicidal whiner, which already negates his "badassery" People think that just because he kills and has muscles he's badassTheKing012
would you not be pissed off if the gods decided to illustrate their own personal contest with you while you are off trying to save your dying daughter? ignorantly blockading your path at every turn?
hell, i would.
edit: and before that, stole your brother away and imprisoned him away while you were both youths? and in the aftermath destroyed your entire village?
He tried to KILL HIMSELF, there is NOTHING badass about that.
Tali from Mass Effect. I like her, but they way Mass Effect fans rave about her, I have no choice but to vote for her.
