The first half of my post was opinion, yes. The second half was not though. Name me one other RPG that had a bigger impact on the company who made it, the console it appeared on, its genre and the industry in general.

smerlus

Some of those impacts are overstated and others led to the company's and genre's stagnation. Yes it was a great boost to the company and then it went stright to their head so they decided to launch a film company and started production on the movie that would almost cause the company to collapse. Also since you have a PC game in your sig you should realize that FF VII had no effect on Western RPG's so all FFVII did is effect a subgenre which is now bordering on the edge of archaic outdated design philosophy. If you want to name a series that actually had a large impact on the genre it would be the Ultima series in which games like Dragon Quest and FF were built on, a series that pioneered the MMORPG, a series that was doing morality decisions back in 1985. Anyways overated: FFVII, Oblivion, Odin Sphere, Mass Effect Underated: Arcanum, Bloodlines, Divine Divinity, Morrowind. Ultima Series

Translation: FFVII inspired RPGs to take the opposite direction of WRPGs, therefore it was bad.

Just because a game is popular dosn't mean it's overrated.. I mean it must have done something to deserve all the attention. Personally I don't know of any overrated rpgs.. Don't get me started on FPSs though lol

translation: I don't have a proper rebuttle so i'll be a JRPG apologist and blame declining scores on WRPG's

If you can come up with a good reason why JRPGs are so inherently flawed in comparison to WRPGs other than the fact that they don't focus on player choice and nonlinearity, then I'm all ears. But I've talked with you in the past, and the only reason you seem to dislike JRPGs so vehemently is because they have different design objectives than WRPGs. And now you're happy to declare the JRPG genre dying.

The fact that you invent the term "JRPG apologist" alone reveals that you are too biased to even have an open mind to genres outside of the ones that you prefer.

Edit: I don't believe I brought up "declining scores."

Overrated: Morrowind and Fallout. Innovative, but not that enjoyable to actually play, and not half as immersive as people make them out to be.

Underrated: FF12, a lot of people hated this, but to me it felt like more of an RPG than any other FF I've played except from maybe Tactics. Look what followed. FF13 . Maybe KoTOR II to a degree as well, but it was broken on release, parts of the game flat out didn't work. It was also my introduction to RPG's so I'm biased towards it.

A lot of people will say things like Dues Ex and Planescape: Torment which is a bit puzzling to me. I know from perhaps a review perspective these games are somewhat underrated, but considering how old those reviews are I wouldn't give them much notice. Even then the review scores are in the 9's where it counts. I wouldn't even say NWN was overrated, because far too many people think it sucked, like me. There was even a thread which asks for everyone's favourite RPG and Planescape won even beating out Baldur's Gate 2, by a considerable margin.

Planescape had the better story, BGII is the better game.

I think Deus Ex is overrated, especially because people want to call it the greatest PC game ever. Hardly. Its a top 20 PC game, but not the best.
