MS, Nintendo, Sony - Earnings Results July-Sept 2010

A year head start and PS3 is only 3 million behind. M$ needed that head start it is the only way they would have managed to survive this generation. M$ should be thanking Sony for keeping the price of PS3 so high. If PS3 was $200-$250 by now M$ would be done for.

Tidbits: This is the first financial quarter in which Wii is in third place in sales between the home consoles.

This is the first quarter in which Sony has had a console on top since October-December 2006, when the PS2 shipped 6.7 million units.

So the PS3 obviously survived the 360 Slim challenge with flying colors.

One question everyone wonders is when, if ever, will the PS3 'finally' surpass the 360? The holiday season will tell us a lot about whether it remains on track to do so with the onslaught of Kinect. The PS3 Slim is old-hat, so the days of year over year growth should finally grind to a halt.

Meeting their expectation of selling 15 million PS3s will still require that they exceed their shipments from October-March last year.

April-June 2010: PS3 outsells 360 by 0.9 million units;

January-March 2010: PS3 outsells 360 by 0.7 million units;

October-December 2009: PS3 outsells 360 by 1.3 million units;

PS3 is still 3 million behind 360 in lifetime sales, not 1 million.

the only thing thats left that can potentially prevent sony from passing microsoft in sales is the kinect. lets see how it does.

i agree, this gen is almost over anyways...

nice for all, owever I don't think its particualrly fair for MS since the chances of doing better across 2 quarters is much higher than 1, bunch of mis informed people will try claiming ownage. you should add the Q4 of MS to level the playing field. 1.5 million+ 2.8 million= 4.3 million. mayceV

If Iwas a investor why would I care how many TV's sony sold 5 or 10years ago...I could be wrong and that info could be buried in there somewhere...if so my bad!

Nintendo's did specifically give the lifetime sales of each of their platforms, and even broke down the DS lifetime sales by model. I'm not sure if the other two did, but it's a moot point. Anyone can add up the quarterly reports and arrive at the correct number pretty easily.

1) shin is one of those reliable posters i trust and almost always provides "factual evidence" 2) before i post in a thread i always at least read the OP and any links provided because i dont like to post with just assumptions (i would recommend you follow this advice) 3) you're too lazy to click on some links and skim through just the numbers? but then you have time to write some posts?

MS is directly on their IR site under KPIs for the segment.

And Nintendo's on the last page of their PDF.

Why wouldn't this information be in their fiscal statements? It's important to let publishers know there's a market out there for games on their platform.

I've noticed Sony tends to stay silent on shipment numbers until they're ready to reveal them. Even when the numbers are very positive.

The other problem is that people continue to use VGChartz as their source for worldwide sales 'information'.

Sony has it's PS3 hardware and software here.

So even with the Tiny 360 the PS3 still managed to sell better, guess there's more demand for the PS3 worldwide. And OMGZ teh gap is getting smaller :o Im kinda shocked that Wii sold the least in the 3 month period. Guess its time for a price cut Ninty, especially with the motion control battle underway.

It's too bad MS are putting all their eggs in one basket for the majority of 2011. I feel Kinect will be there downfall, and Im almost certain will make PS3 outsell the 360 Worldwide considering 2011 is looking mighty damn good for the console in terms of exclusive content.

Well I will not doubt you again.....I was suprised to see the PS3 so close to the 360 to be honest and when I couldn't find it in your link I had my reservations..(I onlyskimmed for sony's by the way) Well it looks like the PS3 might well pass the 360 then this Gen.. I would of never thought possible.(only becuase 360 got such a early start) I consider them both great gaming machines.

In America yeah it has a shot but Im hesitant considering how much it costs and the many problems and strict rules with the product. It may well be huge for Christmas but by next year I reckon it will be forgotten. Now in EU and Japan Im quite sure that the product wont even take off Im afraid.

It will be played in the holiday season and will become apparent by many that it's just not viable option for gaming right now, the word of mouth will spread and MS will find themselves in a position where sticking with Kinect is not working out. I never said it wouldn't sell but it wont sell to expectations. MS is expecting 5 million sold by end of 2010. 5 million :| Can't see it happening. But Kinect will do far better in America than the rest of the world, by that I mean it will fizzle out fast in other territories.

You better hope It does. SONY came into this gen thinking they had already won, and so they took a back seat. That turned out poorly for 2 years. Now they've realised it wont be easy this gen, they've really come into their own with tons of exclusive games, new IP's a far improved online MP (For free) amongst tons of other things.

Whilst they've been imporving MS have been doing sod all, oh, unless you include Kinectimals

PS3 has an absolutely killer line up for 2011 and 360 has Gears 3 in September :| and Kinect. I am absolutely certain by the end of 2011 the PS3 will have overtaken the 360, it's inevitable.

SW is going to be a glorious place ..popcorn filled and all when the ps3 overtakes the 360...the damage control and the 'superiority complex' will be lulzworthy!! on a side note regarding kinect.. do casuals realize that they have to buy a 360 ON TOP of kinect in order to play it (kinect)? im fairly confident that only a SMALL % of ppl who have a 360 already would buy kinect. How much does a 360 cost in america? 200? so its really gonna be like $350 to buy kinect! (For the new casuals)campzor

The Kinect + 360 4gb bundle is 300$. The PS3 + Move bundle is 400$.

I didn't say you were knocking anyone. I'm saying it's in the bestinterest of gamers everywhere for MS to be humbled, they got this far through great marketing, alogn with great games and a superior online service, that at the time had tons of value

Now all they're giving us is exclusive DLC(for a month or so) whilst increasing Live prices despite the competition being almost on par and free. Not just that but they delay the ONLY decent exclusive they have by 7 months, just 'cause they think it'll sell more .
