MS, Nintendo, Sony - Earnings Results July-Sept 2010

i dont understand why people think Move or Kinect will surely push sales for both consoles.. i mean 'PROBABLY' most of those gamers who will get these add-ons already own a 360 or PS3... As for those 'casuals' who are into motion controller / games, lets not forget Wii is still on the market at a reasonable price with a much larger games library (for casuals / kids / family games)..

I think that when it comes to pushing more units for 360 & PS3 the only 2 things that really make a difference are 1) PRICE-CUTS and 2) Constant no. of quality exclusives that require you to get that specific console to play them... So far MS has the price in their favour being cheaper, while Sony has the exclusives + Blu-ray..

as for 2011 Sony will have the Move available all year long and Kinect will be available for MS, however so far Sony destroys MS in terms of exclusive games lineup, so it will be interesting to see how both do in terms of sales.. Also am pretty sure that next year we'll see further Price-cuts for both consoles..

It'll be the other way around - Kinect will widen the gap. Which is sad really, considering how much it sucks.

If Microsoft intends to widen the gap then Kinect will need to move 1.5 million more 360s than their 5.2 million holiday quarter result last year.

This is of course all speculatory. Sony may not meet target, and GT5 may not even release this quarter. And Kinect could somehow flop despite having an ungodly advertising budget.

On an aside, for the lulz I went to see vgcrapz, they still have PS3 at pretty much less sold than their numbers reported in July lol.

PS3 has an absolutely killer line up for 2011 and 360 has Gears 3 in September :| and Kinect. I am absolutely certain by the end of 2011 the PS3 will have overtaken the 360, it's inevitable.

I didn't say you were knocking anyone. I'm saying it's in the bestinterest of gamers everywhere for MS to be humbled, they got this far through great marketing, alogn with great games and a superior online service, that at the time had tons of value

Now all they're giving us is exclusive DLC(for a month or so) whilst increasing Live prices despite the competition being almost on par and free. Not just that but they delay the ONLY decent exclusive they have by 7 months, just 'cause they think it'll sell more .

Iagree in part. MS have had the LIVE price fixed for years, all the while they have updated it gratis

That's the excuse they gave us, but it's still a flakey one considering the opposition is free and almost as good, not to mention things like Steam are leagues ahead and free. MS still can't even sort out Games On Demand prices,£20.00 for Halo wars? I could literally get 3 1/2copies for the same price.

You get early access to demos and stuff usually before PSN or GFWL.

In my experiance PSN usually gets the demo's at the same time, if not a few days later due to the update times.

Idont really play that many MS exclusives (cause there arent that many LOL) but gears halo and fable + when we had mass effect obviously >>>>>>>>any PS3 exclusives IMO of course.

Halo, Gears and Fable are decent exclusives to have, they all sell well, but for me, it's not enough. I'm not much of a Halo fan. I hate Fable with a passion and the Gears formula is well and truely stale now. If they had Mass Effect as an exclusive i'd feel slightly better, but they lost that change when they let EA get Bioware. They no longer have Bungie, who are making multiplatform games now, so what does that leave the Xbox in the future? Gears is only a trilogy, and EPIC games aren't owned by MS

I'm very impressed by the PS3's attach rate siting at 8.5 which is pretty clse to the x-box and I found very suprising considering game attach rates in Europe and other un tracked regions tend to be lower due to increased prices over American software.

Hopefully with the Eu pulling away from the other regions by a more distinct margin (After already being the largest market since 1995) the 25% price diffrencesstart to go down as publishers try to inflate game sales n the region.

well seems like at this point kinect is the 360's last line of defense and savior if you will. i think MS it taking too much of a gamble on this one. they're "almost" completely alienating their core fanbase while trying to give kinect a shot. then theres the wii which is the dominant motion control competitor and sony's move has so far taken off to a good start. then there is sony's killer exclusive line up for 2011. i think if kinect doesnt manage to reel in the sales MS is hoping for, they're gonna end up in 3rd place for sure sometime in 2011. its gonna be an interesting year in gaming thats for sure

Greatnewsfor Sony! I'm a little surprised by the numbers myself as all early reports where that the 360 was selling better for the quarter. I guess 360 just rules in the US now. I wonder how much of the unit sales came from other regions outside the Europe and Japan. At this rate the PS3 should pass the 360 sometime in 2012 at the latest. Of course with all the great games coming out for the PS3 next year(exclusive wise) they might pass them next year but I'm sure Kinect will help the 360 sales from totally dragging way behind.

As for the battle between the PS3 and 360, the gap is now an even 3 million. That's down from 3.8 million last quarter report, right? This is heated! I wonder how much Kinect and Gran Turismo 5 will affect the PS360 this holiday.

Edit: Also, I just noticed the PSP and PS2 sales are the same. Maybe people are confusing the PSP as a portable PS2 :P. "I'll just get the portable version."

Seems about right since they are both last gen systems. LOL. I'm sure the PS2 sales are coming from the other region territories outside of Europe like South America where that is the only system they can buy relatively cheap.

Which do you think will impact its respective system's installed based the most? :P

I'm not really pitting the two next to one another, as they're different things. But they are the last potential "system sellers". I'm just wondering how Kinect will affect the 360 and GT5 will affect the PS3. The results don't have to be compared.

360 LTD software = 8.9*44.6 = 396.94 million
LTD last quarter = 8.9*41.7 = 371.13 million

Difference = 25.81 million in software for the quarter

And for PS3, Wii and DS attach rates, again just loose estimates:

PS3 software attach rate = 8.43

Wii software attach rate = 8.04 - 1 for Wii Sports pack-in = 7.04

DS software attach rate = 5.70

I'm really surprised PS3 is doing this well. I guess more demand for it has helped it tremendously. Sony so much exclussives for 2011...they haven't even begun to take out their big guns. And MS is putting all hope for Kinect, I thought they knew better than this. All that money should've been invested to the one simple strategy that has helped Nintendo and Sony all along....exclussives.

I think Kinect has more potential to be a system seller than GT5, but...

Move, LittleBigPlanet 2, inFamous 2, Killzone 3, The Last Guardian, Motorstorm 3, Twisted Metal, Resistance 3 and Ratchet All 4 One will also be selling the PS3 in 2011.

Wow even with the NPD, the PS3 outsold the 360 for this quarter and wow again that the gap actually shrank down to 3 million! :o:lol:

So even after the slim, and all that "the gap is widening!" by the lems, PS3 still outsold it. Well that's a slap of reality, and why I always say wait til official numbers before claiming who is losing or winning.FIipMode

For the majority of the generation thus far the PS3 has been comparatively very expensive. It still retails at an average selling price of around $50+ more than the 360.

So closing a lead by nearly 6 million units over less than 4 calendar years is a pretty good performance.

The Wii is of course the success story of the generation though.

These results aren't likely to change anything from a platform development choice standpoint for publishers anyway at least for the PS360, the market on each HD console is just too big to ignore for third party publishers. They're just interesting from an analytical standpoint.

Good numbers for all 3 companies.

Also. good to see Sony making a profit.
