http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-07-15-mw3-multiplayer-inspired-by-cod4

Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer maps are being designed with a "Call of Duty 4 mentality", Infinity Ward has revealed.

Numerous nooks and crannies are out; simplified, fewer-tiered designs are in.

This not only "discourages the more camper mentality that seems to emerge in the map design of Modern Wafare 2", Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling told Kotaku - it also "simplifies it so that the less skilled player has less to think about".

The overarching goal is to get back to faster "gun-on-gun" battles.

"Modern Warfare ****is, for me, all about the high-speed, fast-paced - and I'm talking in terms of smooth controls and 60-frames-per-second framerate - infantry-focused combat," Bowling shared.

"And it's all focused on that gun-on-gun gameplay, especially in Modern Warfare 3. I feel like it's something we nailed with Call of Duty 4. We moved away from it a little bit with MW2, relying heavily on air support, killstreaks, perks and stuff like that.

"Modern Warfare 3 very much [is] building up from that Call of Duty 4 mentality of gun-on-gun, fast-paced infantry gameplay."

Robert Bowling, creative strategist, Infinity Ward

"Modern Warfare 3 very much [is] building up from that Call of Duty 4 mentality of gun-on-gun, fast-paced infantry gameplay."

Modern Warfare 3 will have far fewer "hotspots" per multiplayer map, explained Bowling. And while multi-tiered levels are out of favour, they'll still exist, albeit in meaningful ways rather than as bread-and-butter routine. Air support will be downplayed in Modern Warfare 3, too.

"With Modern Warfare 3 it's much, much more on allowing you to focus on what's necessary," added Bowling. "It's making vertical combat when it makes sense, but it's not a blanket rule across every map. You will have some maps that focus on verticality and that are focused on multiple things. And then you have other maps that are very limited on the hotspots.

"The hotspots are a key thing on Modern Warfare 3," he elaborated. "We went into each map wanting you to be able to turn a corner and know very easily that these are the three - no more than five - places I need to check."

The Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer reveal is being reserved by Activision for the Call of Duty XP fan convention in early September. There we'll also hear about what else multiplayer accompaniment Call of Duty: Elite has up its sleeve.

Its too late Activision. Releasing a copy of Halo Waypoint and Battlefield Battlelog but for a fee and then having dangerously identical graphics as your previous games won't cut it for me. :P

I already played MW3 when it came out in 2007. With fresh games like Battlefield 3 and Red Orchestra 2 on the horizon, MW3 doesn't even draw my attention in the slightest.

well I had a laugh. Rather hilarious to think about it really, as Call of Duty after 4 has basically been expansions. Anyways, I will give it a shot if I get bored of BF3, unlikely as it may be.

Instead of bringing the gameplay of the gameback to cod 4 the should atleast try to make the game more different then the previous cod games.

Thats funny. I thought World at War's, Modern Warfare 2's and Black Ops' multiplayer were also inspired by CoD4's. :P

Kotick's mentality. They pump out some good games but I could never approve of such a man and it's a shame that good developers are wasted doing his bidding.

That's a dumb reason. In the end, if you want to send a message to Activision, do it by buying the good games and not the bad ones, not by boycoting every product because of the offhand remarks of one guy, Its like choosing to not buy a Ford just because Ford was an anti semite. Its not a good reason.

I'd be shocked if there weren't men just as greedy in every other major game publisher. The guy is misquoted so much it's not even funny though. In the end it's not like he personally has any influence over game development of many of the games at Activision. It's kinda ridiculous that you'd let the existence of one person effect your decision on weather you should purchase a game or not. Every big game publisher has done some bad things in the past, you just gotta look into it. If you're going to let morality drive your purchases I can guarantee you you could find a good excuse not to buy anything.

I remember I really liked COD4. It was the game that brought me into the FPS genre. I liked Golden Eye but every other FPS I tried-Halo and Unreal are the only ones I remember by name-I didn't like. I remember I bought MW2 excited since I really loved MW. It was fun for a few hours, but after that I started disliking it. IDK if I'd still like COD4 today. Since the day I got COD 4 as a gift, I've played a lot of FPS and multiplayer games. I have a feeling it just wouldn't feel right anymore.

So COD 4 is a good thing I suppose. I'll play MW3 eventually. Pretty much everyone will have it. Whether I buy it or not is a different story.

You could put a BF3 disc in a MW3 case, and for the most part all but the hardest of hardcore MW3 vs BF3 types would be hard pressed to notice the difference. BF3 looks like a solid shooter and maybe it'll be better than MW3, but the idea that it's some bastion of innovation and fresh design in the face of the CoD franchise is hi-larious.

To me this is a very good thing. I got into Modern Warfare late but those maps with the exceptions of two or three were much better than Modern Warfare 2. I spent 12 days worth of playing time on Modern Warfare 2 and from what I believe that article says I'll be spending just as much on MW3. The airsupport being reduced and the killstreaks being minimalized is great. The airsupport was way to overpowered and it was stupid how easy you were killed by it. "Oh you're in a building? Doesn't matter. I'll just shoot outside it with an infinite ammo supply and no cooldown period until you die." Also I don't even really like/use most of the killstreaks in MW2. Half are useless unless in very specific situations and no one uses any of the ones that help the team like UAV cause they have it set up to get the stupid (thankfully, I believe, removed) nuke.

Lolwat.

BF3 destroys MW3 in every imaginable way. The Battlefield franchise innovated and kept innovating long before the CoD franchise ever did.

BF3 will be something we have not experienced before. It will take BF2 to a completely new and epic level.

But you just said that they pump out good games. And that Kotick was the reason you don't buy Activision games. Which is it?

The good games are hindered by extreme casualization. (Which is the mainstream audience that Kotick desires).

I've seen both Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3. Both just look like 2 different styles of the same game. I find a nice way to compare them would be like Zelda WW to TP. Both have different designs, strategies like WW focuses much more on the overworld, while TP focuses more on the dungeons. But you know what both had in common? The same core gameplay. You swipe your sword, solve dungeons etc... MW3 and BF3 just like that. Two different sides of the same coin I guess you could say.

Or Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play 4 Free, Battlefield 2142 and Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. Theres really no reason not to count them, they were all from Dice. Selective memory. Still, it's a complete joke to call Battlefield 3 fresh or innovative.

That's like hitting a dead end. There's a big demand for the game to be like the 4th one, but then they will be criticized for doing the same game as before. I wonder what they could possibly add or improve if they are bound to repeat the formula. It would be nice if they were to focus more on cooperative MP instead of deathmatch since they are not trying change the game.

Good, CoD 4 had my favorite mp maps from all the CoD games so far. Also hopefully they mean it when they say there will be less focus on air support, killstreaks, and perks.

it also "simplifies it so that the less skilled player has less to think about".

Maybe now they can train monkeys on it to send in Afghanistan.

Quite a bit of too little too late here. If people say it really is more similar to COD4, which I still play to this day from time to time, then I might check it out in a steam sale, but probably ot.

Yep, fresh. There hasn't been a Battlefield game is 6 years.

Try again.

vashkey

so whats bad company and 1943 then? I thought they were battlefield games:?

Or Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play 4 Free, Battlefield 2142 and Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. Theres really no reason not to count them, they were all from Dice. Selective memory. Still, it's a complete joke to call Battlefield 3 fresh or innovative.

Since BF2 and 2142, no, there havent been actual battlefield games. All the ones released on console were spinoffs of the series and do not contain nearly the same features found in BF1942, BF2, and 2142. It's true, there hasn't been a real BF game in years
