1. Developers are content with blatantly ripping off eachother to the point where the differences between two games is non existant. Just look at Medal of Honor and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare...

2. A.I is progressing BACKWARDS. Lets go back a few years. In Half-Life, the marines were whooping our asses through team work and intelligence. I just remember completley being amazed at how this one marine climbed a ladder while the other ones covered his back or how one would throw a grenade then they'd just rush you or flank you. F.E.A.R is still the king of A.I. due to the cunning replica soldiers. These days, developers rely on HORDES of enemies with pinpoint-laser accuracy to give the player a challenge...all while they fall off cliffs on their own accord or stop to stare at the grenade you just threw at them.

3. Storylines are just about as generic as they can get. YAWWWN. Stolen cache of nuclear warheads...aliens invading earth....terrorists or Russia invading the U.S...blah blah blah blah

4. Same thing applies to settings and locales in which these games take place. Why cant we have more Bioshocks and S.T.A.L.K.E.Rs?

5. In multiplayer, we're putting a bigger stress on being a douche, playing solo and camping, instead of working in a team towards an objective. Win/Loss ratio SHOULD be considered more imporant than Kill/Death, but all those snipers who would refuse to disarm the bomb even if it was strapped to their legs seem to disagree.

6. Once again in multiplayer, developers are relying too heavily on these psuedo-MMORPG elements to keep the player coming back for more, even if it greatly increases the learning curve for people trying to get into a game a long time after its release.

7. Characters, just like the stories and settings, are copypasta'd. Asian who is good hacking and using computers, loud mouth black guy from Louisiana who's a pro with demolitions, badass sniper with a moustache, loud mouthed drill sargeant who sounds like Bill Cosby, square jawed white guy in a hawaiian tourist shirt....yawwn.

8. FPGs games are just so predictable these days that it is simply maddening. I can predict every single twist and turn in the plot before I even put the disc in my console or PC. Why are there a bunch of rocket launchers...in a toilet? Sure (insert developer here). I totally dont see a bigboss fight/enemy vehicle coming. Oh and let me guess, I'll be on a quest to find (insert character/biological weapon) and when I follow my lead it will turn out to be false and the guy who sent us on the wild goose chase will obviously be a "bad guy" right?

9. Campaigns are significantly shorter. CoD4 was 6 hours long!

Our race to achieve photorealistic graphics is coming at the expense of pretty much everything else...because of this, I might be converting to PS3 because the exclusives that it has are much more original and varied (not necessarily FPS games)

Killzone 2's AI is easily comparable to F.E.A.R.'s. But short campaigns this gen really disappoint.

Yeah it can and so can S.T.A.L.K.E.R. at times. There's nothing quite like the AI in BC2. They have pinpoint laser accuracy. Watch in despair as somebody with a SHOTGUN is shooting that little fleshy part that is exposed, MAKING EVERY SINGLE SHOT HIT from...HALF A MILE away?

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. can be cheap at times.:P Especially with mods. I get raeped often in AMK. But I love the series, among the best this gen. I want the new stalker game that has the atmosphere of SoC and all of the CoP's improvements.

I wasnt too big of a fan of how once you'd take out that military base near Cordon, new soldiers would respawn literally five minutes later. What the hell was that? It should have been 5 in-game days or something.

Wow man, that was actually spot on...

Its a shame tho, because for every brilliant original FPS, you're gonna get 100 cookie cutter, copy and paste, rip-off games from lazy devs who might tweak a few things here and there but ultimately come out with the same game...

Oh and I'll put a tenner on someone telling you to blog this...

But military shooters seem to be the only ones released...or the Sci-Fi ones about an alien invasion of Earth. Developers are scared of venturing into originality with their games because ofthemany games that tried this ended up being flops. What the devs dont seem to understand is that it wasnt because the customers felt "alienated", its because the gamesucked:roll:

I agree.. I got really fed up with fps games due to the fact its nothing new.. the stories put a different twist to the ones you said above. You hit the horde gametype on the head.. the A.I isn't very smart they just get progressively stronger.. I do have to give Vegas props tho.. the terrorists in that game were somewhat clever. they would try to flank you from the back if you weren't careful, but sometimes they were pretty stupid as well. Online is just like you said too.. People care more for there k/d than w/l ratio. To an extent, I kind of wish online shooters went back to there roots with straight up rules like Unreal Tournament 2004, or Call of Duty 2... Those games are insanely fun and tho simplistic... I don't know why people keep on trying to copy Vegas (yes vegas had unlockable stuff before cod4 ever did..) But I guess there just copying them (like you said) cause games like cod4 were smash hits. Now you see every shooter nowadays give you perks and crap.. I hate it.

Maybe so, but a lot of the time its true...I know DICE are quality developers and they made incredible MP for BC2 but name one stand out, differentiating factor between Medal of Honors MP and MW2's....

Both are as bad as eachother, and copy'n'pasting should not be an option in either case. Why risk contributing in the death of AN ENTIRE MEDIUM through bombarding it with trashby releasing a half-baked, generic Sci-Fi FPS that will flop and recieve mediocre scores?

On this same note, I'd like to add that self-plagarism is also not acceptable (think Treyarch and Infinity Ward with CoD).

Maybe gaming's become too big in terms of business. In order to make a modern looking game, you need a big development team and a big budget, so you're therefore left to try and grab the biggest profit possible and to do that you go with what most people like, which is for some reason modern shooters. Try making anything remotely niche and you're left with less profit. I probably said a load of crap but that's how it seems to me.

Yes I've played the game and enemy variety is a common complaint. I believe it was even mentioned in an IGN review. There were bandits, the dogs and spiderants but I was hoping there'd be more than just that. Sure there's variety within the bandits like the flaming guys, midgets, roidjunkies, etc but in a world like Pandora, I was expecting more wildlife and more variety in that wildlife.

Never liked Modern FPS games much. Too much emphasis on camping, and the so-called "realism". which equates to several scripted sequences, with dodgy AI and linear gunplay.

Prefer other games, likeStalker , Crysis, and evenHalo. Less on "Gritty Realism", and more on Fun, and awesome new gameplay experiences, supplemented with non-linear gameplay, and dynamic AI that results in a new gameplay experience every time.

Crysis suffered from bad AI :(

But yeah man I get you with this "Gritty Realism". Far Cry was the pro "blockbuster" shooter at this IMO if you could excuse the awful trigen levels. Overall, S.T.A.L.K.E.R was the best. I remember the first mission with Wolf where you have to assault that camp and struggle with your pistol's weak ballistics tthen scour the place for food and band aids. The AI also made the fight that much intense. I remember watching them look for me only to diverte their attention towards Wolf's team.

Publishers are playing it safe. If there is any other reason please feel free to express it. Money hunger and developing cost on this so called "HD" era are getting crazy (HD was possible on PC long time ago)

Same. FPSs were pretty awsome back in 04-06, when I was only a PC gamer :D

It was blockbuster after blockbuster (with SOME originality),

  • F.E.A.R
  • Far Cry
  • Doom 3
  • Half-Life 2
  • Battlefield 2
  • Unreal Tournament 2004
  • SWAT 4
  • Call of Duty 2
  • Call of Duty 4 (Its multiplayer was different and innovative but its a shame what it spawned)

Whats funny? There was ACTUALLY A DIFFERENCE among ALL of these games.

Lol want to hear the sad thing? All of these series' blow today with the exception of Half-Life (SWAT and Doom excused due to none being released). Dice were complete jokers with Bad Company, UT3 was a massive fail, F.E.A.R 2 was mediocre, Far Cry 2 was complete trash (no exaggeration unlike my BC2thread) and Call of Duty doesnt need to be explained

I agree on all points, generic characters, generic settings (seriously stop using new york or anywhere in America we live in a big world), generic plots - especially the nazis or russians vs the americans, and we never get to play as either the nazis or russians when they fit against Americans :S. At least bulletstorm and homefront are trying something a little different, crysis 2 on the other hand went backwards.

It went from a mystery to (what we can see from the trailers)-

Aliens invading(generic plot), New York(Generic location) and you in a super suit(generic sci-fi character) needs to take them out (again all part of the generic plot)

I support the occasional FPS nowadays, but it usually has to have something special going for it.

It's an industry trend, and it won't go away till people stop buying them, but in this day and age when it seems 95% of people playing these games just started gaming this gen with an FPS in hand I doubt it'll end soon. It's all they know, and there seems to be nothing you can do to sway their opinion in an attempt to get them to try a different variety of games.

I remain hopeful it will happen someday, though. It happened with all those 2D platformers sporting an animal mascot collecting one hundred "coins", and the JRPG genre. Both went stagnant aside from a very small handful of gems.

I agree, everything you said is on point, but I can live with a short singleplayer if the multiplayer is balanced and will last you a long time.

It is really is sad to see us progress backwards. Once Crytek looses their prestige (graphics and tech), they're not going to be able to sell much when you consider that they're being outdone in pretty much everything else. The graphics on consoles are great, but many other games are graphically on-par to Crysis 2 and its not like its probably mediocre multiplayer modes (im not even too sure that it will have any multiplayer), generic plot, location and supersuit will save it just like you said. It...sort of reminds me of F.E.A.R in a way. F.E.A.R 2 wasnt bad, but it definately didnt live up to the expectations set from the first.

On a side note, the jumpin tech from CryEngine 2 to CryEngine 3 was pretty insignificant IMO

1. That business for you. And when there isn't copying you see people complaining about it. How often do you hear complain about how you can't sprint in Halo or that theres is no campaign co-op in Modern Warfare 2? 2. Debatable. Depends on what you play 5. This has always been a part of multiplayer shooters. 6. It's a technique thats proven to work 3, 7, 8. A problem that plagues gaming as a whole, not just shooters. 9. Shooters have never been known for consistently providing long campaigns. There are exceptions but that doesn't mean they were the rule.

Really? Most people flying solo, ignoring obectives and doing their own thing to the point of making the playlist useless has always been part of MP? Then damn...I must have remembered CS, BF2 and UT04 differently, where people stuck together and capped objectives even WITHOUT MICS OR NO WAY TO COMMUNICATE. Those lone wolf snipers on BF2 used to be KICKED for not capping flags and nobody even glanced at their ratios, because they werent shown everywhere like Obama/Biden posters during the presidential elections.

9. Since when was 6-7 hours the average length of a shooter?

You and me must have been playing different games or smoking different substances.

I wish Metroid Prime had more traditional controls. My main reason for never finishing it. You can't look up and walk at the same time, You have to rely on lock on for combat. And all that scanning was kinda annoying.
