Cannot say I was the biggest fan of Demons Souls, BUT this game does look much better so far I think and they are making the difficulty somethign enjoyable rather than frustrating (Demons Souls). The way he speaks definitely sounds like he knows what he is talking about.

NaveedLife
I know what you mean when you say the way he speaks. I love the way their designer talks about his vision of the game. Capcom as a company could learn a lot from someone like him since almost all difficulty in their games comes from wrestling with the controller.

and the amazing atmosphere

Yangire

Thats something I hope they improve on, after playing Shadow Tower Abyss Demon's Souls atmosphere felt really lacking.

well compaired to most games released this gen it's amazing, most games I've played this gen don't have ANY atmosphere at all. Demon's Souls world had it's own unique feel and when you begin to play it drew you into it,and to think that Dark Souls will be a semless open world it's quite compelling

man if that ever happens to me I would be hella pissed. can't a guy walk without getting violated? lol

that gif would be more awesome if the player actually gets impaled by that gigantic horn.

But instant deaths are never fun :P

[QUOTE="Jolt_counter119"]

I dont know what game you guys were playing but Demons Souls was nothing like that.

Jolt_counter119

Not all the time, but it was like that in areas. Oh there is a guy hiding behind this corner I didnt know was there and he bashed my head in? Yay I get to play the whole level again now but THIS time its going to be....completely the same :(. There are DEFINITELY trial and error parts, like knowing exactly where to stand with the dragons burning stuff, and when they will come through. Nothing helps you but learning from death. I beat the game and the awful ending (or lack there of) made me like it less.

But you dont get one shotted ever. And if you are worried about the odd corner enemy the game teaches you quickly NOT to let your gaurd down. Plus the little blood messages pretty much tell you everything, the online was probably the best implemented ive played in an rpg like this. What I noticed throughout the game was that I was dying a lot less in the second half than I was in the first. I think Nintendo has spoiled you with its ridiculously easy gameplay that you dont enjoy replaying levels anymore:P I hate too many checkpoints.

lol you know that I play more than Nintendo games right? I mainly game on PC and even PS3 more than Wii. Mario Galaxy 2 was way too easy in areas :(. I just don't find it fun to die and then when you do, your a "ghost", lose all your souls, and start at the beginning. It ruins the flow and while I can take going back through again (even if boring cause monsters do the same thing every time), I can't take it again and again :P. And yes at times is it my fault for having a ton of souls on me and then dieing? Yeah sorta it is. But it is no fun to spend a couple hours racking up souls and such, then dieing and losing them all. Makes you want to quit and not come back. IMO there are better ways to go about challenging the player. Darksiders was pretty good at this I think. The combat was (in many areas not all) actually quite fun and challenging.

PS - levels that are practically pitch black are not fun :P. I HATE that place with a passion.

While I agree this game will probably be quite good, I didn't play the first one so I don't really know, All I can say is Skyrim will blow this game out of the water in terms of 'best rpg of 2011'Brazil_Surfer
I have played both Oblivion and Demons Souls and to be honest, Oblivion was terrible! If it's any indication as to what Skyrim will be then no thank you. Oblivion was almost childishly easy and the only redeeming factor in Oblivion is nothing other than polish and content, i finished the main storyline and some of the DLC but after doing the first DLC expecting a good boss type fight i realised i hit him i think 2 times and he died, it was pathetic!

I never again want to play a game where the story builds me up to think i'm going head to head with some super being who has wiped out entire armies just to kill him in 2 heavy hits.. Atleast Dark Souls will be giving RPG fans a real challenge none of the handholding story-driven retard level gameplay that Oblivion had.

More difficult? Day one buy for sure! People always said that Demon's Souls was cripplingly hard, but i thought it just a step above average in terms of difficulty from what I've played. Basic quick strategic reflexes are all you needed to play that game.

I didn't find Oblivion to be all that polished or easy. And Skyrim is looking WAY better than Oblivion so far.

This "vision" could even be felt in the original game. Even wiht no hype and no advertising or publihser faith (originally wasn't even going to be released in the US) it had more attention to detail, **** and depth than most games with multi-million dollar budgets and huge ad campaigns.

You could tell the creators really wanted the player to be imbedded in the game world and lore, the feeling of lonelyness the creator says he wants the player to feel when playing the games is something you can actually almost feel. It's quite diffrent from most games where you sit down and play with absolutly no feeling at all.

They need to change a couple things about the Demons Souls formula....

Change #1: Don't award the player their full health bar after they've proven they don't need it... this just doesnt make any sense.

Change #2: Having to start at the beginning of the level with all enemies respawned is not difficulty... its Monotonous!

Change those 2 things... and I'm a happy camper.

Thank you for saying that. A lot of people don't get that simple concept so they cry that it's too hard.

Demon's Souls was one of the best RPG's I've ever played. Naturally, I cannot wait for Dark Souls to be release (and play it on the PS3, where the experienced players will be at :P).

Did you play Demon's Souls?

He got hit from the back without blocking, if that wasn't an instant death then it's more fogiving than Demon's Souls ever was. Even the zombies on stage one could kill you in one or two hits if you're not on guard...that armored bull thing that just ran into him, looks like it would kill you5 times over if it hit youon DS.

remembers silly death from weak looking street mutts in two or three strikes lol

Dragons, Octupus Men (Mind Flayers), Giant Bearbugs, Assassins, Giant Depraved Ones, Black Skeletons, Grim Reapers, and Filthy Ones are all normal enemies in the game that can easily OHK a player that isn't min-maxing (and some can still 1shot a min-maxer). Heck, if you played as a magic user, most things in the game would one shot you all the time.

And if Demon's Souls is anything to judge this by, I'll play it and beat it with little to no trouble.

And continue to  at DS fans who think they have the hardest game ever.

OneSanitarium

it's not the fact that it's hard that attracts people to demon's Souls it's the awsomeness of the gameplay and the amazing atmosphere, the difficultyis just a point some people latch on to beause it's the one thing they can't overcome.

I never really thought demon's souls was THAT hard it's just a selling point to open a discussion on the game

The gameplay was just a matter of "Don't run ahead if you don't know whats there. Also, Block most of the time and attack after being attacked". I found it boring.

The atmosphere was only really existant in the swampy levels (been a while since I've played the game, don't remember the names anymore) and the boss with Maden Astrea or however her name is spelled.

Also, why are so many bosses weak to fire? I know it's not really that many, but using fire always seemed smart.

Yeah for people who aren't good at the game. Demon's Souls is pretty much a joke if you do it in co-op and/or with magic. The only real difficulty comes from using melee only.

I too beat it with minimal problems. but you have to realize that difficulty is a highly subjective thing and it is almost impossible to say that X game is harder than Y. Demons Souls tampered with mechanics people arent exactly used to anymore such as very limited checkpoints and cheap shots on the player. I can understand why people thought the game was hard, as one mistake could possibly be your last and the game is very punishing compared to most modern games, with the whole soul form, dropping souls on death, level resetting.

Personally I thought Demons Souls was one of the easiest games I have ever played. Hell I died more in some single missions in Super Mario Galaxy 2 than I did in my both of my Demon's Souls playthroughs. I felt that Demon's Souls was an easy game because of an AI easy as hell to abuse, plentiful of magic grass healing you with no penalty or limitations, broken magic, attacks too easy to evade, lack of overall enemy variety, redicilously slow arrows, most bosses posed no actual threat some I beat without ever taking damage.

Carshamy: The number of hits it takes to kill you can range from 1-7(-1900) dephending on the enemy, difficulty, your armor and of course, how much you pump up your vitality.

never once felt cheated in DS. Difficulty was overrated, but it was still really hard. I wonder if some who say it was easy played it on White Tendency? Also, fire blast was too strong, that's my major complaint, but NG+ fixed that I hear. Demon's Souls was a great game. My only complaint was the lack of story and how it got easier as I went on in some areas, leading to a bit of weird inconsistency. But tbh, I did play in some areas under white tendencies. so i cant say if I ever played DS at its hardest offering. Still, the game was highly satisfying/rewarding. A much better choice for GOTY than UC2 as far as I'm concerned.

Wait, why?

The part where it says "more difficult than its predecessor" just confirmed it, Demon Souls was too hard so i wont bother with this

Demons Souls was not that difficult. This is good news because i love a challenge. Cant wait for Dark Souls, its going to be Epic from the look of things.

You found the game boring but you beat it 3 times? Difficult or not, it was not why I loved the game, I felt it controlled a lot better then many action RPGs and the atmosphere of course. The precise blocking and attacking was much better then in most other games. Difficult or not, 99% of games released these days are a joke and make it hard to even die at all. Demon's Souls wasn't particularly hard, it was more like what you'd hope games would be like.

The precise blocking and attacking was much better then in most other games. Difficult or not, 99% of games released these days are a joke and make it hard to even die at all. Demon's Souls wasn't particularly hard, it was more like what you'd hope games would be like.

I enjoyed it at first, but that went away by the end of the first playthrough. I continued to play through it because I like grinding. By the time I traded it in, i was about level 212. Not the highest, but thats where I stopped when i traded it in.

I don't feel the blocking was all the precise or anything. I also feel the leniency for Just Blocks was way too long. I don't like being able to casually stroll around an Just Block on instinct. Though I only did it on the common enemies and never the bigger ones, because I never realized what it was until I was grinding, and at that point I was just running backward through a level and soul stealing Black Phantoms.

The first three times I beat the game, I only used melee.

There may have been more leniancy then expected, but I mean its rare for your swing or block to go unexpectedly, in a lot of games, you may mash attack and once in a while it clips through objects and stuff, but a lot of the times in Demon's Souls, swords bounce off walls and blocking is pretty realistic for what areas you are defending and stuff. With the left hand/right hand system, it goes farther then the average action RPG in terms of action combat depth. They are even using it in Skyrim now.

I still need to play the first! I remember reading TW2's hardest difficulty is supposed to be really hard. Wonder which will truly be more difficult.

On hardest for The Witcher 2, its like Diablo 2's hardcore more where if you die, your file gets erased.

More games need that.XD

Pretty much how I feel. Everyone saying "I dont want to replay the same level over and over again" well stop dying and you wont have to. Seriously gamers today act like if you lose in a game you should be rewarded for your previous work but so what? Just run through without thought and die then start at a checkpoint and rinse and repeat until you beat the game? If you play the game smart and take the time to know what you're doing its not a very hard game but if you screw up its not going to just give you all of your souls and start you up again all nice and deep into the level as if sloppy play is encouraged.

Games shouldnt have checkpoints inside levels the levels themselves are good enough checkpoints.

Mitu123, have you tried this and this? (nethack has no option to turn it off though)

The game may just have given him a bad taste in the mouth. In WoW Cataclysm (a game/expansion I dislike) I got 2 characters up to the level cap despite disliking it, I was hoping it was going to be good eventually but alas the day never came.

Despite me constantly complaining about never being challanged in Demon's Souls, I loved it. And I loved it for exactly the same reasons you listed: The atmosphere, the combat as well as the storytelling (contrary to what many people say Demon's Souls had a story, it was just really subtle)made the game shine really brightly and became one of my favorite Action RPGs of all time (top 10).

Only pros dual wield two Keel Smashers.

I liked the bouncing off the walls feature a bit, but I never really had it happen to me. Though, I don't remember what weapon I used the most.

My favorite aspect of Demon's Souls, believe it or not, was when you were standing on steps, your feet would actually be on individual steeps, it wasn't just some ramp textured to look like steps.

I don't know why thats my favorite though.:?

Looks sick. Hopefully its a little easier this time around.Easyle
Demon's Souls was pretty easy, I hope it's not easier. Besides, they just said, "more difficult" game. I can't wait. Loved Demon's souls!

Difficult is ok. Not being able to pause a game is stupid no matter how you defend Demons Souls. The restarting was annoying as he'll. I dont't mind hard games, and I loved DS. But some design choices are perplexing.

Can't wait. Demons Souls was the only game I enjoyed on PS3 and since I'm not giving Sony's gaming department any more money it's good to know this one will be multiplat.

Demon's Souls had a lot of safe areas though, its not like monsters respawn or anything. I mean if you need to immediately pause, it might be a problem. Restarting isn't too bad, you get through A LOT faster after the first time.

I personally thought restarting was great, and wish other games could be more punishing. NG series being the only other modern games that are punishingly difficult.

Not to mention having to restart also made grinding pretty easy early on.

A fanmade roguelike seems to come out every other day, those are punishingly difficult.

You cannot pause the game? now that's awful, you should be able to stop or take a break from the game any time you want, i hope there is a pause in Dark Souls, because that's just awful game design, even Ninja Gaiden in the NES has a Pause button, this doesn't make sense from a design point of view, this isn't a hard game, this is just devs messing with users.

This. Like I said in my previous post, how can you even feel like you accomplished anything beating a level riding on checkpoints? If you cant beat the level on one go then you cant beat the level whether you finish it or not.

Demon's Souls doesn't have a pause button in the traditional sense but it's not like you are fighting demon's every second. You can relax in the Nexus before returning to different worlds to battle.
