It's time to make this happen. With the new and *Improved!* Playstation 3 price we can now make a brand new price comparison between the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3, between the most *valuable* of the two SKUs (Elite is a wash, 80GB is a wash).

The Xbox 360 Premium SKU retails at $399 and comes sans HD format playback, wi-fi, and an expanded hard drive. It is, however, a decent value proposition and does provide a hard drive, some online materials, and a shiny DVD drive. In order to play games online through Xbox Live you must pay a $50 annual fee for Xbox Live Gold Membership.

The Playstation 3 60 GB SKU retails at $499 and comes with an internal Blu Ray drive for HD movie playback and Blu Ray disc games. It comes equipped with Wi-fi and an expanded hard drive that can be replaced with any 2.5" compatible SATA hard drive. Online gaming is free. It also comes equipped with a web browser no one cares about.

For basic feature parity we will take the Xbox 360 Premium SKU and add costs as needed, because that's how I'm gonna do it.

XB360P $399 + (XBL G $50p/y)4 years + $200 ext HD + $100 Wi-Fi = $899.

PS3 60 $499 + $0 = $499.

Oh, my lord, look at that, I think we have a winner as far as value judgments are concerned.

But...Jack Tretton expected PS3 sales to double due to the price cut.

And the PS3 is profitable, while the Xbox 360 is not. Source: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aYWkGuoeuipo&refer=home

And both the PSP and the PS2 continue to sell more than the Xbox 360 since launch, while more PS2 games are in the top 20 than Xbox 360 or Wii games.

At the same time Peter Moore explains that the latest warranty extension is costing them over $1 billion this year alone and Sony is going to make $600 million in net profits. Teh Wowz.

What about online? With the new and *Improved!* price, 4 years of Xbox Live Gold catch you with a bad knock in the head. You end up paying more than me just for playing GRAW 2 online! Oh, snap!

cool u get more bang for ur buck with PS3.

but if u only care about the games.

400 versus 500
470 versus 600

and 50 bucks a year for the best console online service is no biggie. thats less than a dollar a day.
I dont want to get the HDDVD or the Wifi for my 360. so really I still got the cheaper up front system. with the better game library so far. and all the major multiplats which will either look the same or look better on 360. Oh and the online is better on the 360 as well.

Does the term "dedicated server" mean anything to you? How about the terms "bullet lag" and "host advantage?" Ring a bell?

According to Team Xbox, which is apparently NOT composed of Xbox 360 fanboys, Xbox Live Gold is a ripoff.

To pay $300 assumes you play in SD and offline. If you play in SD and offline, go right ahead and buy the Core SKU. Uh oh, looks like you forgot something. That little something is a memory unit! Looks like you're looking at $340 at the very least, chief. Unfortunate lot o' yas, really.

host advantage is a Itch. but as far as lag my connection is great. I get almost no lag. and bullet lag isnt as big in fact i rarely get it. host advantage i only see with the shot gun on gears. there is no other distince advantage i have seen. and peer to peer doesnt bother me. since there really isnt much lag when i play. maybe im lucky. and xbox live has the content and right now more games take advantage of xbox live. so still the better console online service is XBOX live. all u gain with PS3 is dedicated servers. with Xbox live u gain a lot more at this point.

$30+$6 if you don't discriminate.

The Playstation 3 also works with any HDMI cable and any Bluetooth headset, including those your father might happen to have lying around.

Did you win yet? Oh. Wake me up when you win.

Additionally, I think you need to purchase peripherals from Microsoft, including Microsoft wireless controllers (since they charge royalties on third-parties wireless controllers, a la Rock Band), hard drives, and wi-fi.

Unfortunate, really. As it turns out, my ability to use any flash drive on the market, any USB cable on the market, any hard drive on the market, any HDMI cable on the market, any wireless controller, and any Bluetooth headset is actually an advantage.

You never know, my PS3 is connected 24/7 wirelessly because my modem is downstairs.

And blu-ray was an incredible add, watching movies at 1080p is priceless.

But you forgot about the only thing that matters, and that's Xbox Live Gold Membership. Regardless of the extra hard drive space, HD format, etcetera, you're still getting shafted and in a 4 year time span you end up paying $100 more than the Playstation 3 owner regardless. Wanna play offline? Cool, your choice.

Is this the same Jack Tretton who said he'd pay $1200 if someone could find a PS3 sitting on the shelf for more than 5 seconds back in January (he still owes me $9600 BTW)

And is this the same Jack Tretton who claimed SOny don't buy exclusives even though numerous evidence says otherwise?

Yeah, I thought so.

No, that's the Jack Tretton that reduced the sales projections to 12 million and then fell short by 400,000 consoles. That Jack Tretton.

You see grown ups don't mind spending extra money for nice services. Kids who have no jobs and depend on mom and dad for everything do though. So i understand why you would hate on 360. You can't afford it, and hey thats fine.

And without a 800gig HDD in the PS3 because of how much space each game takes, oblivion over a gig, and how many I play i'll need it. so How much do those cost?

The maximum on the ps3 is limitless it seems

How do they still lose??elaborate.Unforgiven2870

Well, when you still miss out on a huge number of features, you lose. For example, HD movie playback, HD game playback (no HDMI, no 7.1 surround, composite cables on 360 core SKU), no online gaming (no Gold Membership, no Wi-Fi), and a smaller hard drive=lose.

But...Jack Tretton expected PS3 sales to double due to the price cut.....

Had to stop reading right there.

Is this the same Jack Tretton who claim the Killzone 2 trailer was gameplay?

Is this the same Jack Tretton who said he'd pay $1200 if someone could find a PS3 sitting on the shelf for more than 5 seconds back in January (he still owes me $9600 BTW)

And is this the same Jack Tretton who claimed SOny don't buy exclusives even though numerous evidence says otherwise?

Yeah, I thought so.

No, that's the Jack Tretton that reduced the sales projections to 12 million and then fell short by 400,000 consoles. That Jack Tretton.

No the same Jack Tretton who helped in the production of a system that can't even out sell the GBA or even get over 100k a month in sales.

Redfingers you disappoint me I thought you was one of the good cows :(. I can't believe your using that old and tried agrument to justify your PS3 purchase. Here is the real price comparison

360: $300/$400/$480/ with the Elite and the$400 you could start HD gaming out of the box. You don't even need 50$ for online gaming the box comes with a free month of Xbox live :D

PS3: $600 You need the Bluetooth headset and HD cables.

You're sure it's not the same Jack Tretton who claimed Sony would ship (ie: manufacture) 6 million PS3's by March and missed that mark by 500k units.

We can do this all day, kid. ;)

To play games out of the box Xbox 360 costs anywhere from 300 - 480 dollars. PS3 costs anywhere from 500 - 600 dollars. Nothing else is needed.

/Thread

swaginator

To pay $300 assumes you play in SD and offline. If you play in SD and offline, go right ahead and buy the Core SKU. Uh oh, looks like you forgot something. That little something is a memory unit! Looks like you're looking at $340 at the very least, chief. Unfortunate lot o' yas, really.

For those basic costs you can play games just fine. Not everyone plays online (I do). Why make such an ignorant post?

I said go right ahead. Pay $340 and be happy. But you still lose.

You see grown ups don't mind spending extra money for nice services. Kids who have no jobs and depend on mom and dad for everything do though. So i understand why you would hate on 360. You can't afford it, and hey thats fine.

Hmm. Let's see, let me make a value assessment. The highest quality HDMI output available, 7.1 surround sound, HD movie playback, high-capacity game storage medium, higher capacity hard drive, free online, and wi-fi....

or cross-game invites. I'll take my hundred dollars and everything cited above instead of the latter, TY, good nite.

No, it does not. Learn to discriminate and to price check. You will learn very quickly that you can get things for cheap when you don't have to pay Microsoft licensing fees and royalties on third party electronics and buy peripherals exclusively for that company.

The Sony fanboys had to behave themselves for the past 8 months after Sony became the joke of the industry and they were the joke of this forum.

Now that they think the momentum is with Sony, the fanboys in them is coming out.

Teh Wowz.

Popularity of a console does not decide if it is better

As long as enough people have 360's, halo 3 and xbox live by november that i can play some good ctf, i dont give a crap about any other console
