Not another one of these "Lets add a bunch of accessories into the 360's price to make it seem more expensive than the PS3!" threads...

Xbox 360: $400

PS3: $500

End of Story.

The accessories are OPTIONAL and not in any way required. Take that "mandatory" crap elsewhere. :|

Redfingers

Do you play online?

Wait, you just lost. I don't care what the answer to that question is. Read the front page again.

Do you even have a PS3?

No. This is a joke thread for my own amusement. Yes, I have a Playstation 3. That matters how?

And do you play online and use PSN at all?

Problems with your post:

In the beginning, there was installed base. With an attractive pricing and feature arrangement, consoles get sold. When consoles get sold, developers eyes light up with dollar signs and come-'a-knocking. When the happens, we get all those games and then some, presumably.

So everything begins with the value assessment.

Additionally, as I said, HD movie playback is included with the console, meaning you are not limited to games software in order to experience your PS3.

Additionally, last time I checked, the Playstation 3 has more games lined up this year and more games announced in 2008 than the Xbox 360. When's the last time you saw Lair, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, and Warhawk? Because you CLEARLY need to, and immediately.

I envy in some ways 360 games, but I do not envy the 360 lineup.

kingsfan_0333

Ok and where is the value for those of us who wouldn't use those features?

Don't look to hard for it, because it isn't there. Like I said, if you NEED the Core SKU, and nothing else, no online gaming (therefore no Wi-Fi, etc), no HDTV, etc, pony up $340 and enjoy your (admittedly, toned down) experience and leave the rest of us alone.

What's your definitions of "toned down"? Because IMO, inferior multiplatform games, madden running only 30 fps compared to the 360's glorious 60 fps, GTA missing out on 360's exclusive content - I think all of these fit into the "toned down" category.

Oblivion, Virtua Tennis, Fight Night, Rainbow Six, Ridge Racer, and Need for Speed would like a chat with you.

As would UT3, Haze, Burnout Paradise, and Dark Sector (lead platform games or timed exclusives).

Ninja Gaiden=1080P+60FPS. Show me an example of this on the Xbox 360 and you win a prize.

Wow, this trick is as old as the Rosetta stone. How's about adding the car you used to drive to Best Buy to get the PS3? Or, hell, what about Best Buy itself? Couldn't have gotten the PS3 without Besy Buy either. And your house...and electrical capabilities...etc.

Redfingers

Okay. I'll add the car, the gas, the cost of a Best Buy franchise ownership opportunity, and my house, if you do the same.

But, wait, that's a completely different argument. Claim invalidated.

The same house will cost the same amount of money no matter what console you own, the same car will cost the same amount of money, etc, etc, your argument sucks, get over it.

TOTALLY missed my point...

ROFL. Because you can't just uninstall the game off the HDD when you're done playing Oblivion. 60 Gb's is PLENTY of space.
SergeantSnitch

I know I mentioned this in my original post. So reread it to make sure you caught everything, and I mean everything.

The Playstation 3's original hard drive (and this includes the discontinued 20 gig models) can be replaced at any time with any, that's right, any compatible 2.5" SATA hard drive. That means the numbers are limitless. Additionally, you have the freedom of choosing any third party supplier you wish, because Sony doesn't require you to purchase their peripheral at a premium ($100 for a 20 gig and $170 for a 120 gig is rather overpriced, wouldn't you say?).

And, again, you can do this at any time. So even though you can purchase a 120 gigger on the internet for far less than you can if you were to purchase Microsoft's peripheral, you could wait three years, check the capacities, and the prices (both of which will be better by this time), and throw it in your PS3. So no worries.

And like the guy above me says, you can uninstall the game.

Bro I was talkign to DoctorBunny who was trying to say that PS3 needs 800gigs of sapce.

you add crap to the 360 to help the PS3 not seem more expensive.your arguement sucks in reality. if u wanna say to get all the extra features of PS3, u need to spend more with 360 this thread would make more sesne. but for just upfront gaming. Its 360 400-470. and PS3 500-600. with 360 also needing a 50 dollar charge for xbox live. those are the only gaming related charges that matter. Wifi, the need for a HD movie format, etc is all extras that are personal preference.

So get over it.

the real costs
360 premium-400+50 bucks for xbox live. 450
360 Elite- 470+50 bucks for xbox live. 520
PS3 60gig- 500
PS3 80gig- 600

thats the upfront cost. everything else like annual fees is long terms expenses. the point is PS3 is still more expensive but it makes up for that in being the better overall value for the extras it has. Which those extras only matter to the people who actually want them.

[QUOTE="DrinkDuff"]Jesus, do you want to add the price of electricity too? How about an HDTV? How about the games? You can't live without the beer hat and the reclining chair. Oh and don't forget the xbox 360 carrying case with a master chief action figure, a windows keychain, and two accessory pouches for extra convenience! :roll:Redfingers

I'm pretty sure that all of those things cost relatively the same amount regardless which console you buy, unless you're attempting to be anal, and I'm not. I'm attempting to be objective.

Sorry kid, you can't claim Jack Tretton is a reliable source and claim to be objective. That's an oxymoron.

I didn't say he was a reliable source of information, I said that Peter Moore *isn't* by demonstration.

Jack Tretton isn't a reliable source of information but I have no doubt that sales will increase as a result of the price cut. How much? IDK. How could I? But they will. Therefore the GBA argument's pretty trite. Especially considering PSP and PS2 outsell XBox 360 since launch, right?

Then what was the point of yet another "Sony fanboy feel good Price comparison" thread again if none of the previous 1000 threads just like it has yet to help the PS3 outsell the 360?

The point is that all we need to consider the base price. We could spend all day adding accessories (controllers are a good example) left and right to make the consoles about equal in price. But they aren't equal.

360=$400

PS3=$500

That is it, end of story. Even if you were considering XBL (which is the only thing close to mandatory for the system) The 360 would still come out to $600. But see, here's the catch: it may be $100 more then the base price of the PS3, but instead of the stagnate library of PS3 games, you get a great library of 360 games from (almost) the past two years and a great online service to boot. It is pretty much a fact right now that 360 has the superior library and no matter how you spin it, it is the main advantage the 360 has over the PS3. And while the prices of the systems are getting close at this point, it still comes down to games. You could have the cheapest console in the world, but if it has no games it becomes useless. The PS3 is nice, but right now it is behind in its game quality.

But cross game invites are convenient! I need them! They're worth the extra $50 annually!

Yeah, kind of like having a web browser on your PS3, being able to use any third party peripheral on the market, and saving money not paying for royalties on wireless third party controllers. That's kind of nice too.

Live > PSN

Even sony agree's, let me guess, MS is paying them huh?

Fuss about what? Did you miss the topic line or the OP? The "fuss" has been all about people attempting to invalidate my OP and rattle my chain. E3 is in like 3 days. Wait like me. Then we'll have a whole bunch of new stuff to discuss.

If the Xbox 360 wins the console war by the end of E3 or Sony slips on a banana, I'll hand it to you, and say that this entire thread doesn't count, I was completely wrong, yada yada. But that's a completely different conversation, for a completely different day. And right now, I'm right. Period. Read the OP again.

It's time to make this happen. With the new and *Improved!* Playstation 3 price we can now make a brand new price comparison between the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3, between the most *valuable* of the two SKUs (Elite is a wash, 80GB is a wash).

The Xbox 360 Premium SKU retails at $399 and comes sans HD format playback, wi-fi, and an expanded hard drive. It is, however, a decent value proposition and does provide a hard drive, some online materials, and a shiny DVD drive. In order to play games online through Xbox Live you must pay a $50 annual fee for Xbox Live Gold Membership.

The Playstation 3 60 GB SKU retails at $499 and comes with an internal Blu Ray drive for HD movie playback and Blu Ray disc games. It comes equipped with Wi-fi and an expanded hard drive that can be replaced with any 2.5" compatible SATA hard drive. Online gaming is free. It also comes equipped with a web browser no one cares about.

For basic feature parity we will take the Xbox 360 Premium SKU and add costs as needed, because that's how I'm gonna do it.

XB360P $399 + (XBL G $50p/y)4 years + $200 ext HD + $100 Wi-Fi = $899.

PS3 60 $499 + $0 = $499.

Oh, my lord, look at that, I think we have a winner as far as value judgments are concerned.

Redfingers

if you're using that logic that shows how intelligent you are than i'll you mine:

xbox 360 sold: 11.6 million

ps3's sold: 3.5 million

x360 is 1 year and 8 months old

ps3 is 8 months old

20:8=2.5

3.5x2.5=8.75 million within the same time period

omg cows lose...

Again, sales are projected to double. Who knows what will happen. With a presumed ten year lifespan for the Playstation 3, it's got a whole lot of head room. I'm not saying it will last that long, I'm saying Sony, developers, consumers want it to. It could easily happen and the entire landscape could change. If it changes, no big deal, I still get Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and all that. I'll cry another day.

Sales don't make the OP invalid. Let's stay on the topic please.

Let's see, the arguments go like this: "I don't need Xbox Live, Wi-Fi, a hard drive, component cables, HDMI, or Blu Ray, so this argument doesn't apply to me." Then get out. That doesn't make the OP untrue.

But...Jack Tretton expected PS3 sales to double due to the price cut.

And the PS3 is profitable, while the Xbox 360 is not. Source: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aYWkGuoeuipo&refer=home

And both the PSP and the PS2 continue to sell more than the Xbox 360 since launch, while more PS2 games are in the top 20 than Xbox 360 or Wii games.

At the same time Peter Moore explains that the latest warranty extension is costing them over $1 billion this year alone and Sony is going to make $600 million in net profits. Teh Wowz.

Hahaha. MS pays TeamXbox to write a negative Xbox Live review, as well. That's how it works. It goes both ways.

I paid $30 for online per month (worth every penny), didn't need to buy an HD dvd drive or Wi-Fi. To me (A GAMER 1st) the cost was $330.

PS3 60 $499 + $0 = $499.

You have to buy either an HD component video cable or and HDMI in order to play games in HD. I bought an HDMI cable since Sony didn't include one. I haven't bought a headset yet but I'm sure that will set me $40. I doubt I'll need it since there is very little communication on PSN anyway.

Oh, my lord, look at that, I think we have a winner as far as value judgments are concerned.

To a gamer, value is brought through its games. In otherwords, the X360 at $500 is worth more to a true gamer than the PS3 simply because it has a bigger and much better game library. I bought my console to play games NOT watch movies so for most gamers the blu-ray player is of little value.

I'm sure that microsoft will respond with its own price cut. The first person to hit $200 (the sweet spot) will end up raking most of the sales.

Don't look to hard for it, because it isn't there. Like I said, if you NEED the Core SKU, and nothing else, no online gaming (therefore no Wi-Fi, etc), no HDTV, etc, pony up $340 and enjoy your (admittedly, toned down) experience and leave the rest of us alone.

istreakforfood

you make it sound like wi-fi is important to play online games. yea no thnks. wired > wireless. i dont like wi-fi cause it can lag time to time from the buffering and that is a con when playing competitive online games for me. even when i use my ps3 i use my ethernet cables over using wi-fi when going online.

yeah wifi sucks. I have experienced these frustrations firsthand. Wifi is inferior in every way to ethernet. I can hardly play counterstrike anymore because my wifi connection will disconnect at random times, or just lag unacceptably. If I could take it back, I would, but there is no ethernet long enough to connect the network router to my computer over 60 ft away.

Oh my god...the return of the "360 + everything on the planet is more xpensiv!!"

Necro'd terrible arguments FTW?

Tsug_Ze_Wind

Exactly. It was a crap argument then, and it's even worse now.

People, the PS3 is more expensive. Get over it. Even if Sony does drop the price, you can bet your ass that MS is going to follow suit.

Redfingers

if you're using that logic that shows how intelligent you are than i'll you mine:

xbox 360 sold: 11.6 million

ps3's sold: 3.5 million

x360 is 1 year and 8 months old

ps3 is 8 months old

"Xbox 360 is selling more than the PS3." In an extremely limited timeframe, with extremely limiting factors for the Playstation 3 and an extremely preferable situation for the Xbox 360. Still doesn't apply to the OP, and still doesn't make it untrue. I am not a cow, I simply made a Playstation 3 purchase. I won with that purchase. Now anyone who buys one after today will win.

"Xbox 360 has more/better games." Not only is this statement soon to be completely untrue, given PS3's upcoming game lineup, it also does not apply to this thread and is completely irrelevant to both the topic and the OP.

Projected by Sony. Microsoft projects ot be in one billion peoples homes with the 360. one billion > double of 3.5 million

/logic

Redfingers

I had a chat with them...

oblivion told me that it wasn't worth waiting almost a full year for nearly the same graphics and some content than can be downloaded. It also told me that the 360 version had a higher average review score.

Rainbow Six on the ps3 told me that it was a loser because the average review score was lower than the average 360 score.

Ridge Racer told me that it didn't go multiplatform on the 360 with the latest edition. It wants to ask you why you chose this as an example.

Need for speed told me again that it was outrated by the 360 version.

Wow...ninja gaiden had nothing to do with my post. Thanks for the information though...although it did absolutly nothing in proving that the madden 08 ps3 version is "toned down".

And I couldn't chat with ut3, haze, burnout paradise, or dark sector...since none of those are out yet. So I guess i'll have to do what every other ps3 fan is doing and "wait".

lol i have to be honest with you...I can't wait to hear your excuses considering the ratings are right in front of you.

To play games out of the box Xbox 360 costs anywhere from 300 - 480 dollars. PS3 costs anywhere from 500 - 600 dollars. Nothing else is needed.

white_sox

To pay $300 assumes you play in SD and offline. If you play in SD and offline, go right ahead and buy the Core SKU. Uh oh, looks like you forgot something. That little something is a memory unit! Looks like you're looking at $340 at the very least, chief. Unfortunate lot o' yas, really.

RaveRabbid

1st point:

If you buy it from Microsoft, it costs $50. If you buy it from Ebay, it costs $30 (I assume "per month" was a typo, and if it wasn't you lose viciously). Very observant. Still, in four years time, that's $120 and it still puts you at $20 over the Playstation 3. BTW: at $330 you're still missing the online tools, component cables, and a memory card which are necessary for basic, functional gaming this gen. At the very least you need a memory card, at $40.

2nd point:

You can get an HDMI for $6 and you can buy a Bluetooth headset for less than $30. Mine cost $30 on Ebay. Literally 4 out of 5 of the players on Rainbow Six (probably a greater percentage) had headsets and were actively using them to harass me with annoying white noise and meaningless comments and swearing.

3rd point:

True gamers play Dragon Quest on the NES. Point destroyed. The term "True Gamers" is subjective and essentially meaningless. I could say "True Gamers play Halo" or "True Gamers play Resistance" as per needed. Bigger and much better game library point has already been confronted and dismantled. I will make this game instead. The Playstation 3 already has a bigger game lineup for this year and the next, consisting of many quality first and third party titles.

If Microsoft responds with a price cut, it will only be because they are forced into a corner. I expect them to be forced in a corner, but I don't expect them to react quickly. According to my source, Bloomberg.com, on the first page, Microsoft loses money on each Xbox 360 sold while Sony makes a profit. That means Sony has wiggle room that Microsoft does not. Sony is looking to make a $600 million profit this year (source: Gamespot) while Microsoft is going to take projected over $1 billion in losses from the latest warranty extension this year alone (source: Peter Moore's mouth). Additionally, Microsoft is probably rather preoccupied with fixing the Xbox 360's inherent defects on the assembly line as well as in the repair shop, meaning engineering, R&D, and advancing manufacturing costs that the Playstation 3 will not share in.

If they drop the price, there's a different argument.

If they drop the price, there's a different argument.

media center extender...$200?

To play games out of the box Xbox 360 costs anywhere from 300 - 480 dollars. PS3 costs anywhere from 500 - 600 dollars. Nothing else is needed.

Lemmings don't need to save games; they consider it last gen.

Cows don't need rumble, they consider it last gen

than why are they drooling over all of the news of a new controller with rumble?

Personally, I'm not interested. I like the Sixaxis controls because they are producing two franchises (Warhawk and Lair) and I hate rumble anyway.

thank you so much for giving me your personal interests. Unfortunatly if your opinion was the strong majority than there would be no need for a ps3 controller with rumble.

i guess it's not.

Sony is NOTmaking a profit on each PS3 sold. THey are still losing around $200 on each system. There is no way manufacturing costs have dropped that much in 6 months. No way in hell. However, the Xbox 360 is making a profit on each unit sold.
