It's time to make this happen. With the new and *Improved!* Playstation 3 price we can now make a brand new price comparison between the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3, between the most *valuable* of the two SKUs (Elite is a wash, 80GB is a wash).

The Xbox 360 Premium SKU retails at $399 and comes sans HD format playback, wi-fi, and an expanded hard drive. It is, however, a decent value proposition and does provide a hard drive, some online materials, and a shiny DVD drive. In order to play games online through Xbox Live you must pay a $50 annual fee for Xbox Live Gold Membership.

The Playstation 3 60 GB SKU retails at $499 and comes with an internal Blu Ray drive for HD movie playback and Blu Ray disc games. It comes equipped with Wi-fi and an expanded hard drive that can be replaced with any 2.5" compatible SATA hard drive. Online gaming is free. It also comes equipped with a web browser no one cares about.

For basic feature parity we will take the Xbox 360 Premium SKU and add costs as needed, because that's how I'm gonna do it.

XB360P $399 + (XBL G $50p/y)4 years + $200 ext HD + $100 Wi-Fi = $899.

PS3 60 $499 + $0 = $499.

Oh, my lord, look at that, I think we have a winner as far as value judgments are concerned.

kingsfan_0333

not that many people feel that HD-dvd is important yet. I am one of them. many people don't think Wi-Fi is important I am one of them. I Would rather buy XBL because they have more demos.. better arcade games, more videos. I would pick a xbox 360 game even if the price where the same which will never happened because we can expect a Xbox 360 price cut really soon.

doubt that.

the 3 year warranty is gonna cost MS an extra billion to implement.

also the problem why they are breaking is the cheap components they use in them. so expect revised 360 to cost more to produce

dropping prices only sells more 360s which means more to repair

wow, that post was pretty..unsupported.

Refer to my earlier posts. I supported each of his claims with reasonable analysis and provided sources for each of the facts cited.

hahaha what a silly guy

first of all sony took all MS ideas second of all

you get a ethernet cord a 120Gb har drive, Hdmi, Microphone, and Some of the best games that ever came out for about 500$

ps3 you pay about 700 bucks for a piece of &^%$ that wont even satisfy your needs, the copied downlaods demos and eveything,

market place for xbpx can let you watch movies and sony maybe what, they got kilzone 2 OMG

we got mass afftect, blue dragon, GEARS 2 , bio shock, halo 3, and im too tired its 2 oclok in the morning so my brain is friend

so dont start saying dis, sony has only one good idea, blu ray, OMG they charge double for a movie for a tiny dif in pic, i saw the difference, there is none

sony fans G-E-T A- L-Y-F-E

Wrong.

Why is it that I always have to stave off the accusation that the Xbox 360 has better multiplats, better games, etcetera. Time to go to bed, sweet Jesus Christ.

OK

LINK1Here you'll see costs of a 3 year warranty. Mind you refunds to people that paid for repairs, also 360 made up to this day are prone to those same failures so its not like your 360 won't die since MS extended the warranty

Its common sense they will sell more systems with a price drop

That just means e.g 50 less income per system and with still the possiblity of it needing repair

It is my understanding the 360 does HD out of the box. It plays its games in HD resolutions (if you got tv that does HD) and it plays movies at HD resolutions (downloaded and reg dvd upscaled to hd resolutions). The only thing it doesnt have is an "hd format" being hddvd/blueray for higher capacity.

Both the premium and elite are cheaper up front regardless of all the extras included in the price. It would be different if we were comparing a ps3 with a snes. But then again the 3do was the big console on the block at the time of the snes and look how it turned out.

The_Game21x

Problems with your post: There is a gigantic difference between upscaled DVDs (which are still, in all respects, 480p picture quality at best), and Blu Ray DVDs, which play in native 1080p. If you can't tell the difference by reading these words, go to Best Buy, watch a Blu Ray display on a 1080p set, then get back to me and tell me if it was any different than an upscaled DVD.

PS3 is still more impressive in many respects than the Xbox 360. Let me provide one that doesn't require fancy tech-talk or developer interviews (though there are plenty to support it). The Blu Ray drive and the standard HDD both provide something to games that the Xbox 360 cannot provide with it's non-standard HDD and DVD drive. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune streams everything, from animations, audio, texture, level data, environments, and character models, from the HDD and the Blu Ray disc in order to eliminate loading times from the game completely. Game data can be cached on the standard HDD for easy access and streaming information can be placed on the disc. Additionally, 60 gigs versus 20 gigs obviously provides a substantial step up in space for downloadable games, movies, pictures, what have you. Also, the third-party 2.5" SATA drive that you can use to replace it can be used for further advantage.

Gigantic games like Lair, Heavenly Sword, and Resistance (compare Resistance's 30 levels and plenty of HD FMV to Gears' 7) already pay testament to the strength of these features.

I find it funny that you say Resistance is so much bigger than Gears of War, yet its campaign tops out at about 12 hours. Gears tops out at about 8. Wow. Huge difference there.

Have you ever played the game? People don't critique Resistance for being short, that's for sure. Hard mode versus normal mode feels like a different experience due to the additional weapons that allow for some different tactical decisions. And, at the end of the day, the difference between the two games is still quantifiable. 30 versus 7.

Add the play& charge kit to the 360's price, oh and since the d-pad is USELESS add the arcade stick price for fighting games(optional)

$399 deal with it.

kingsfan_0333

No XBL deal with it.

optional service...deal with it.

So Online gaming which we've had all last gen should be optional next gen?????

umm it was option last gen too. It's an optional feature no matter when it was offered.

Fact: XBOXLIVE recently within the last few months reached 6 million users.

How can a feature that is used by only a little more than half the fanbase be considered required? What a joke...I'm pretty sure I just destroyed every argument that online is necessary.

I think by your logic you could destroy any argument ever created for "optional" things. The very act of even buying a next-gen system is optional. A vast majority of people don't even have next-gen consoles and play only their PS2s. Why are we even considering next-gen?

Was your strategy to exagerate my post to try and make it less true? I'm pretty sure you failed miserably. But I will simplify it based on your failed strategy:

Among360 console owners, online is optional...which is quite clear considering only about 50% of 360 owners have xboxlive. If this is not quite clear, than perhaps you need to ask someone for help.

Quite the condescending post, champ, but I assure you I have no "strategy" to make your post less true. In fact, your post is very valid. Enjoy your $400 dollar console that you play by yourself.

Clearing up the trouble made PlayStation 3 profitable several months ago, giving the company room to cut prices, analyst Doherty said. Microsoft still loses money on each Xbox 360 it sells, he said.

i can't believe sony actually makes money from ps3 amazing.

Fact: When you go to a store, and look at the price stickers, the 360 is cheaper.

/thread

Redfingers

Funny.

It is true though. I mean, when you went into the store and bought a PS2, didn't the price affect your decision at all (well unless you have all three last-gen consoles)?

LOL let's asume that xbox360 costs $900 and ps3 is $500... But still wonder why xbox360 outsells ps3. As you posted before, you said that many sony fans are waiting for a price drop and $100 price drop is going to double its sale. Are you reading your arguement?

1st, if ps3 is much cheaperin price, wouldn't manygamers would've jumped in already and bought a ps3 instead of xbox 360? And why would sony need a price drop since ps3 is SO much cheaper than xbox 360?

2nd, you can NEVER EVER use the excuse, "people are waiting for price drop" arguement because you said it yourself, ps3 is much cheaper than xbox 360

so, since you can't use that arguement, why would you think $100 drop would double in sale?

The only thing you don't need for the Xbox 360 is the external hard drive, so it would be $699 vs $499, but still, the PS3 is cheaper.

Homer_Sapien's view on the thread:

TC created a thread supporting that the idea that Sony isn't expensive (which was the ENTIRE point of this thread, but many people missed it), and many lemmings, and some cows too, got angred and came up with pointless, invalid, or even misinformed posts.

Through it all, the TC maintained his composition and supported his arguements with links, and known facts.

Sure, there were some good, well thought-out counters towards his arguements, but it just doesn't compete.

If this were an official debate, I would declare the TC as the victor simply on the reason that everyone against him was either border-line retarded, or just unfortunately didn't come out clearly above their b-l retarded counterparts. Well done.

Now for MY conclusion:

The entire point of this thread is to stop people from argueing that the PS3 is expensive, because hey, it isn't. I for one am sick and tired of people saying "Yeah, but it's soooo expensive!" It isn't! You get a LOT of value for your money. Don't get me wrong, you get value with the 360 too. But, now the prices between the two are very, very close, so, none of them are expensive.

Now, no more, please, my brain hurts a little.

So now I have to uninstall a game whenever I want to play it? the convenience huh???

Redfingers

But cross game invites are convenient! I need them! They're worth the extra $50 annually!

Yeah, kind of like having a web browser on your PS3, being able to use any third party peripheral on the market, and saving money not paying for royalties on wireless third party controllers. That's kind of nice too.

Live > PSN

Even sony agree's, let me guess, MS is paying them huh?

Yeah, but Team Xbox doesn't.

TEH RIPOFF>PSN

This is an editorial. Do you know what an editorial means? It means that this is an OPINION, NOT A FACT. So stop using it as one. Just because one person on that site states that is a rip-off doesn't make that the overall opinion of the site. It's like how newspapers have an editorial section. Just because they post opinions, doesn't neccesarily mean that that is their opinion. I think your being very trite, and only use selective points to build up your agrument. There are tons of points that invalidate a lot of your points that you skip, just because they destroy your agrument.

NOT! Cannot add live to the price for 4 years as we are not sure what will happen next year. Paying for online might go away sometime next year so not so on that one.

HD dvd player. Guess what, the consumer has decided and with less than 200,000 units sold that means that consumers do not care for hd movies as they want to play games on their gaming console. Yet another crazy concept! So DO NOT EVER put the hd player in this price comparsion again as sales numbers prove it isn't wanted!

WI-FI is optional and not necessary. I have my ps3 wired alone with my 360 so.

PS3 60 gig,$499 HDMI cables $49.99, blu tooth headset $79.99 Total price=629.99

360 pro $399, 1 year live $49 =$449.99

This will be how consumers will view it so deal with it!

A more fair comparison is this....Oh and this is a feature for feature comparison, so 360 fanboys dont give me the "thats not needed BS!)

XBOX 360 Premium...$350(assuming MS will have its first price drop)+$200 for HD DVD addon + $100 for WiFi adapter = $650...(this is also using XBOX Live's Silver set p which is "FREE" but cannot be used to play games online but allows downloads

PS3 60 GB...$500 + ????...wait! What? Hmmm!!! What about HD movie playback? Oh thats built in. How about WiFi?? Built in!!!Oh you gotta pay for online? Nope. Thtas free as wel and you can actually play games online with it!

So as you can see, the PS3 60 GB is BYFAR the better deal and is also now geting the games!!!

Additional cost of Blu-ray movies against standard DVD and Blu-ray games to 360 games over 4 years $700.

PS3 is much more expensive and Cows know it. They wouldn't keep making these threads if they didn't

Oh, my lord, look at that, I think we have a winner as far as value judgments are concerned.

kungfuchaos

Umm, not everyone needs a HDMI hook up and who doesnt own a Blue Tooth headset for their cell phone already? So your post is wrng and you are grasping at straws to make the 360 sound cheaper!!! Simply make out of the box, feature for feature comparisons!!! The 360 is ripping the cnsumer off!!

Yes and sony isn't. I mean they are "true hd" with their cheap composite cable. And you shouldn't generalize and say everyone has a blu tooth headset. If that is the case then why did the majority of the people playing warhawk didn't have a headset.

I was in the beta on my system and only a few people had them. THE MAJORITY did not!

And yes you need hdmi as I did with my plasma set. I had to get my own hd cables as sony wouldn't even include cheap component.

So why is ripping who off?

Just a quick question, being that I dont use wi-fi or the extra hd space or an hd dvd. Can I add 60 plus dollars a year for blue ray kovies? You can hype a blue ray machine but then say well no one will buy movies for it

add a couple of hundred $ for therapy fees to the 360. Going trough that ring of D and talking with customer support for hours really gets your head messy and needy for a shrink. j/k

But...Jack Tretton expected PS3 sales to double due to the price cut.

And the PS3 is profitable, while the Xbox 360 is not. Source:

Jack Trenton also says Sony don't need to pay for 3rd party support and paying for that support is bribery.....

And Sony have lost $2 billion on the PS3 already, while the 360 was rumoured to have been bringing in small profits quite a while ago.

It seems with all of these price comparisons, the HDDVD player and Wifi are ALWAYS brought into the picture....not everyone actually needs WiFi, and who the hell wants HDDVD player? Neither are needed for playing games either. Therefore, the 360 is ( currently) $400, and the PS3 is now $500.

And both the PSP and the PS2 continue to sell more than the Xbox 360 since launch, while more PS2 games are in the top 20 than Xbox 360 or Wii games.

At the same time Peter Moore explains that the latest warranty extension is costing them over $1 billion this year alone and Sony is going to make $600 million in net profits. Teh Wowz.

PS3 sales will not double. PSP and PS2 sold more because they're both far cheaper and the PS2 has a gigantic library of games. Profits don't mean anything to you, me or the next guy over. They only matter to SONY, MS, and Nintendo. Why are you acting like profits are important here?

It is not always about price but about which console suits your needs better. Here are the numbers broken down for ME!

X360 Premium $530 AUD
A 2nd wireless control$50 AUD
HD-DVD not interested in $0
Wireless not needed because my house is hubbed $0
12 months subscription $60 AUD

PS3 60GB $1000 AUD
A 2nd wireless control $75 AUD
Component cable $25 AUD

Total
X360 = $640 AUD
PS3 = $1100 AUD
Price difference = $460 AUD
With a saving like that I could buy a Wii for $380 AUD with money to spare!

This just proves that depending our your personal needs and preferences the X360 or PS3 could be the better buy.

Also, I could be a fanboy and say the X360 games are way better than the PS3 and in addition the X360 games only cost $78 compared to PS3 games for $88.
