Two recently published patents reveal that Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (The PlayStation division of Sony) is considering using stereoscopic screen sharing.

With Sony's new 3DTVs viewing images in stereoscopic 3D is the most obvious trick, but this patent, if implemented, would make it possible for two players to share separate images on the same screen.

Hit the jump for more details:

A real world example may be playing Twisted Metal or Killzone 3 with a friend. Rather than playing in split screen, you could choose to use the stereoscopic setting so that each of you only sees your own character's point of view on the screen. Your friend will no longer be able to cheat and see where you are, or check out your plays on Madden. Also interesting is that the patent drawings show glasses with earbuds, like those old Oakleys. Imagine being able to get your own audio signal while you play.

Thats..... freaking cool man.

Figures. We finally end the scourge of screen-looking in splitscreen just as splitscreen gaming is seemingly on its deathbed.

Woah, did I read that right? Each person sees a completely different screen?

Bravo, Sony.

I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure it's the same idea as stereoscopic 3D: you run two different sets of images at the same time, and use specially designed glasses to separate the two sets. The only difference is that instead of alternately showing both sets to the same person in order to create a 3D effect, this method only shows them the one set of images and blocks the other. The diagram in the OP is pretty straightforward:

In the link I posted above, MS seem to be doing it with some sort of camera trickery I think? Both sound cool.

Only one thing worries me... it will need new glasses to do that since those glasses that they sell now only supports flickering between the eyes.

The same way as stereoscopic 3d. For 3d, the screen refreshes at 120 frames per second. The even frames are for one eye, the odd frames are for the other. Shutter glasses open and close in sync with the tv refreshing so that the left eye only sees the left eye frames and the right eye only sees the right eye frames. This would work the same way, but the even frames would be for one player and the odd frames would be for the other. Instead of the glasses rapidly alternating left-right-left-right, they open and close both sides together so on the even frames both of player1's lenses are closed, and open on the odd frames, while player2's glasses are the opposite. Both players have a full screen while unable to see the other's, even though they are simultaneously playing on the same screen.

This is a MUCH cooler use of stereoscopic screens than 3d.

Wait...So the image would have to render 4 times... So it also has to render 30fps per eye...3D at 120fps!!!! Sony wasnt lying I jest of course.

No,current 3D is like stereo for eyes, but this insted of send frames to seperate eye (by glasses blacking out one eye each frame) it will send seperate glasses for seperate person (1st glasses back outs 2nd not and vice versa each frame). So as 3D is stereo for eyes, that patent showing dual mono chanell for eyes, diffrent way of use stereo :) so it will work at 120Hz

I was mostly jesting in my post. I understand how the 3d tech works =P But god knows what sony is going to cook up in terms of marketing the product.

No doubt the two images are polarised then. Ooh, thank you, I think I've worked out how it works and my initial guess was very close. Assuming i'm right of course XD.

If it has nothing to do with what Sony is doing - then why did the original article link to a lengthy one about a similar MS project? http://www.geekypopular.com/2010/07/09/a-1400-word-return-on-microsoft-bringing-the-future/

Sorry deleted my last post because it sounded too hostile, but sony isn't working on 3d technology that doesn't need glasses. If you read the article, it has nothing to do about 3D effect without glasses. Thus that post has nothing to do with what Sony is doing.

I was expecting something like this to come along eventually.

After all, the first attempted use of the parallax barrier like the 3DS uses that I'm aware of in commercially available technology wasn't used to make 3D, but it was used in a car (2010 Range Rover, I think?) so that one person could use the dashboard screen to view GPS directions while passengers could watch a movie on the same screen.

Shame splitscreen isn't exactly in every multiplayer game anymore...

Since I love local MP, it's great news for me. I just hope for some good implementations of this technology ... anyway, guess I better set my planed purchase date for a 3D Tv a bit later until it's know what exactly is required to use this technology. Guess it all depends on the glasses?

They'll probably be too wimpy to put this out.

Nintendo will take the risk, beat them to their own game and have Sony playing catch up after.

Doubt it Sony is looking for anyway to make people buy their 3D TVs so probably once this technology is out they will put it to use.
