I really don't see the big issue here.
They will use their own shows. Uhm this has been happening for a long time now and we have debated why and all that. It's difficult to reach an audience at E3. A lot of stuff at E3 drowns in the announcement of a few big things.
So, they are moving further away from E3 to put weight on their own shows. That is all they are saying.

You people are so eager to see Nintendo disappear.

Lost a lot of faith in them just now, I don't get how in the world there is one single positive to this... There sure as hell are tons of negatives.

Is E3 really that big of show these days? No offense to the average Geek but to the average Joe, E3 probably doesn't exist and why on Earth would you put all your eggs in one basket? E3 is out of date by the way its presented in this day and age of internet media. If i remember right doesn't MS turn up for the TGS, if so whats different between not turning up altogether and turning up ? More presentations like Nintendo Direct please. Saying that ND has been lousy for WiiU but not 3DS. Yes Bayonetta 2 and W101 was kinda cool but not information on both said titles One which should of been released by now aswell.dobzilian

Sooo... Ninty will miss out on one of the biggest press covered events of the year?

Desmonic

Nope.

Yup. No conference. And don't tell me that public demos=press conference at E3.

Why don't you clarify that this is your stance from the beginning? We are not mind readers.

And yeah you're wrong about conference = all that matters. The vast majority of consumers don't watch them live, or at all. What they do is click on IGN and check out trailers / info there. Nintendo's stuff will be available there just as it always has.

Wait Nintendo are going to be at E3 there just holding smaller press conferences instead aiming at certain groups, read the articules before passing judgement.

there doing one for america and one for the west, there just not doing a massive one in one go but several small one's it could work out better for them. instead of trying to compete with xbox and playstation

The point I was making (and my apologies if I wasn't clear enough) was the non-gaming press. The ones that grab the eye of the casual. All the "moms", "dads" and so forth that may just read an interesting article about the WiiU (or PS4/Nextbox) on their daily newspaper the day after the press conference. Non-gaming press couldn't give a crap about the trailers or closed events. They'll mostly report only the big, flashy conferences! And that's what Ninty will be missing out. (this E3 at least).

Same goes for mos TV reports about E3.

How about we wait and see if that actually happens or not.

By the way, whatever happened to "Sheep only play sales. I'm not a shareholder so sales don't matter to me. I just want game announcements."

I don't think Nintendo has ever not gone. E3 is the biggest gaming media event if the year. You don't just not go unless their is a problem. I'm guessing no games to fill in two hours. No one wants to hear about Wii Fit U for 30 mins.

Considering people were criticizing all three last year for selling out. BPoole even had a sig on it.

I dont subscribe to the BPoole magazine, but last year's E3 'dissapointed' because people thought there would be new console reveals.

Thinking these companies would reveal anything earth-shattering at the closing end of a generation is dillusional.

I thought Nin's last e3 presser was quite good until the end....

Last Year's E3 also didn't show anything "New".

The Newest thing to be shown last year was Watchdogs. Everything else we already knew about, which is why I'm hoping everyone saves everything till then.

Then again, Sony already announced the PS4 so E3 will be nothing, but showing off the system itself and Microsoft is bound to just show everything this May making their E3 lackluster.

And If Nintendo isn't going to show anything at E3 they might as well show everything now.

I've been reading posts for months from WiiU fanboys that have been saying Nintendo is saving everything for E3-- Metroid, Mario, Destiny, and GTA. Now they're posting that E3 isn't that important. They are living on another planet.

I smell failure. Nintendo is going to E3 without a first person Metroid or a 3D Mario. It's going to be the same crap we've seen for 2 years that still hasn't come out, but we've already played seven times like Mario Kart and Super Smash.Dustin_W

Far as we know, their major announcements may be going to be in these smaller meetings. Like that one time Bayonetta 2 was announced in that pre-Wii U release live stream.

Because of that, I still say, wait until E3. They may not have a big conference, but there will still be announcements, just in a different way.

Even if they are continual installments of their IP's, remember this: Money talks. That and several fans still want these franchises to survive.

I don't quite understand the differences in what they're going to do, but I do know this: whatever they do, Nintendo must make a spectacle of it. If they're going to show games behind closed doors or simply have kiosks in the corner running demos, that's not nearly enough. They must come out hugely enthusiastic and give hype to their product as much as possible. At this point, the way they present their games is just as important as the games themselves because the Wii U feels dead and irrelevant. They have to put serious effort into getting everyone insane with excitement towards the future, and I'm sorry, but revealing stuff on Nintendo Direct and with small events is a very bad idea at this juncture. I'll save judgement until I see what they're doing, but hopefully they realize this.

I guess it all depends on your interpretation of 'new' doesnt it.

Game reveals are what E3 is known for, there were quite a few last year. quite a few from Nintendo.

I can't remember what was revealed last year.

A lot of the stuff I remember being "revealed" last year were things that were revealed the previous E3 (2011) or They were already announced a few months before.

I remember when E3 was a time when it was nothing but new stuff. Not just New Footage of Games we already knew were coming.

They write articles about the games not the conferences. People will write about the new 3D Mario, and it'll get headlines everywhere, despite lack of a conference.

It'll get headlines on the gaming press. Not on non-gaming press. Non-gaming press just covers the conference and what's announced on the conference, not so much with what's announced outside of it.

That's just how it goes really. It sucks yeah, they make many mistakes (misinformation) while covering gaming related news, but when E3 comes you'll just hear about stuff talked, shown or mentioned at the big press conferences.

You're speaking as if 3D Mario / Smash 4 / Mario Kart is some random game from the show floor lol.

Or as if a game like X needs mass media coverage to sell its designated 1m copies.

Remember when OoT 3D was not even part of E3 2010, but it was a random PR stealth release after the conference and it became the biggest talker of the entire 3DS lineup? And the best selling 3DS game out of all 3DS games shown at that conference, lol

Wasn't it the '06 e3 that pretty much saved the company, suddenly they think a closed door, mini conference will do the trick? If you are going to reveal something, you make it as big and loud as tolerable. If you plan on killing something due to a lack of interest, opposite.

The problem here is that there's just no feeling of aggresiveness and drive. Sure, they're going to announce games, but from hearing this news it's like they're leaving it up to us to get excited. As a business, that's on them. They need to push their product in every way possible and be shoving upcoming games in our faces, and from this announcement it just feels like another lazy, ho-hum display of their "enthusiasm". I've never felt such a degree of general apathy from any company as I currently do from Nintendo. Hopefully this changes, for their sake.

From a consumer perspective, nothing changes. When we visit IGN this year, we will see the same articles, hands on impressions, interviews and game footage. Just as any other year.

Whether it's worse or better for Nintendo business wise -- we can only guess. Nintendo is the one with all the stats.

There is a point here even though you're a joke poster.

It's about target audience. Fans of Nintendo franchises will get their info through other means (watching Nintendo Direct on the official homepage, official facebook/twitter/youtube channels, trailers on 3DS & Wii U eShop) i.e. straight from Nintendo to you, no middle man.

For the casuals it's tv ads, jimmy fallon, oprah and whatever.

But with this they are basically saying fck you to the curious, but doesn't really care about Nintendo products, guy who's watching E3 for the western AAA games.

Luigi's Mansion 2 on 3DS launched in March 2013 and it has sold over a million copies. I am simply amazed by this number. Nintendo still knows how to market and sell products.

I hope nobody here actually believes your average gamer really watches E3 press conferences. I have lots of gamer friends and most of them don't really watch the whole thing even though i was sharing it to them. Nintendo will still be at e3 although they won't be having a press conference anymore.

That doesn't say Nintendo won't be at E3 that said Satoru Iwata won't be at E3 and is very confusingly translated. "Apart from these closed events, during E3, we are deliberating how to deliver game information to those at home using new methods, so we will announce further plans later." That sounds like they'll be at E3 to me, just that they won't be announcing every single game they have or something.

Pretty much agree and the wishfully thinking could be hoping they're just playing a brilliant game of rope-a-dope and suddenly come out swinging just in time for the launch of the new consoles

We shall see.

Smart move...the only gamers who seriously watch E3 press conferences are...well us...here in gaming forums wasting our lives arguing about gaming consoles

They have fully established their Nintendo Directs as a means of getting their info and announcments out to the public and can easily do one at any time they please for a small cost

So why have a conference at E3 this year when they have no hardware to show off? Why waste millions of dollars renting out a theatre and using a bunch of oversized screens just to show their games when they can do that on a Nintendo Direct?

Just host a hour long + Direct the day before E3 and announce any new games and what is going to be playable on the show floor immediately as soon as E3 starts

I hope nobody here actually believes your average gamer really watches E3 press conferences. I have lots of gamer friends and most of them don't really watch the whole thing even though i was sharing it to them. Nintendo will still be at e3 although they won't be having a press conference anymore.lordlors
Yeah but the news reports when exciting new things are announced. Nobody watches apples conferences but when an IPAD is announced it's all over the news.

Wasn't it the '06 e3 that pretty much saved the company, suddenly they think a closed door, mini conference will do the trick? If you are going to reveal something, you make it as big and loud as tolerable. If you plan on killing something due to a lack of interest, opposite. joehult
E3 is the only gaming event the world pays attention to. It's the only gaming event the TV news stations report on. When the Wii was announced it was on every news station and CNBC.

I think there was a counter that showed over a million concurrent viewers on one of the webstreams last year. It's not just "system warriors" watching, you have pretty much every major electronics site covering and live-blogging the big 3 press conferences (they might not go to all the software shows, but they definitely go there for hardware reveals and for Nintendo).

There is no explanation for this other that Nintendo continues to avoid making investments in their own business. Everything they do is now low budget, and I guess doing away with a major press conference is just one more way for them to do it on the cheap.

[QUOTE="Grey_Eyed_Elf"]They have already released their console to little and received little to no hype from the world's media... Since E3 is pretty much marketing and networking this is just a bad move for Nintendo from a business point of view. Nintendo directs aren't viewed outside of the gaming media and that's what E3 is there for, but like most of Nintendo's recent marketing decisions I'm not too surprised they have made another DERP choice. The next Wii U Nintendo Direct NEEDS to be BIG otherwise it will alienate their fanbase. If all they show is a Mario and the remade Zelda tittle then no wonder they chose to drop out of a presentation.Bread_or_Decide

At Nintendo the inmates are running the asylum. How anyone can spin this as good news is beyond me.

EDIT

The only positive spin is they save money. But you have to spend money to make money. If you don't spend on advertising you wont' sell any hardware or software. SMH Iwata has always been the worst of them and now he runs the show. Good grief.

it's not fully good news as investors won't like it one bit...but it's not fully bad new either

it's a risk and I admire that...it's why I still really like Nintendo, they're freaking crazy and take way more risks than the other two companies....sony and MS just try to mirror each other, but Nintendo to me is just entertaining to watch sometimes even though I don't fully agree with where they go with things

like this specific move for example...I don't fully agree with it, but I understand their motives

and those same electronic sites and live bloggers will cover their Nintendo Direct the day before as well

That's the beauty of their Directs....they don't have to wait for a press conference to announce something...if they got something to say, they'll do it whenever they want
