It sounds like they're skipping the PR part, which is the part EVERYBODY hates. We want to see the games. We don't care about attachment rates, what statistics and focus groups they've been monitoring, ect.

ChubbyGuy40

That is the most bullsh1t defenses of bullsh1t defenses. Congrats.

This is the third year the Wii-U will have been at E3. What will they have to show off besides games and system changes?

And this will be the first time they will be showing the WiiU at E3 after it's already been on the market. They could show some interesting games, 3DS stuff, and whatever other software changes they have done with the systems interface and all that jazz. Actually buying the concept that "nintendo did it to cut out the stuff we all hate" is buying some grade A nintendo bullsh1t.

I'm sure they thought this through and are planning for (what they think is) the best move.

But this is a bummer.

It bums me out as a gamer because I want Nintendo to unload the software hype machine at E3.  I always love the overdose that E3 brings.

It bums me out as a System Warrior because good or bad, this takes their presentation out of the post E3 fun.

This sucks.  At least we have a console reveal or two to fill the void though.

Full statement below;

In the past we invited reporters, investors and analysts, industry partners, such as software publishers, and distributors who attended E3 to our large-scale presentations. We also used them as a communication tool in which we broadcast our presentations on the Internet to reach out to video game fans around the globe. I believe that many are expecting us to host a similar event this year.

On the other hand, since we set out on new endeavors such as Nintendo Direct two years ago in October, we have been paying special attention to the fact that different people demand different types of information from us. For example, as video game fans are looking for information about games, it seems that they are less interested in sales figures that investors and analysts on the other hand attach much greater importance to, and distribution partners are looking for information on how we are going to market our products in the immediate future. At previous financial briefing sessions we announced information about our products, showed videos and even uploaded the recording of these events onto our website, but given that we now have an established method such as Nintendo Direct, we feel that we will be able to deliver our messages more appropriately and effectively by doing so individually based on the various needs of different groups of people.

At E3 this year, we are not planning to launch new hardware, and our main activity at E3 will be to announce and have people experience our software. Many people are certainly very interested in learning more about the Wii U titles that we are going to announce. We will use E3 as an ideal opportunity to talk in detail mainly about the Wii U titles that we are going to launch this year, and we also plan to make it possible for visitors to try the games immediately. As a brand new challenge, we are working to establish a new presentation style for E3.

First, we decided not to host a large-scale presentation targeted at everyone in the international audience where we announce new information as we did in the past. Instead, at the E3 show this year, we are planning to host a few smaller events that are specifically focused on our software lineup for the U.S. market. There will be one closed event for American distributors, and we will hold another closed hands-on experience event, for mainly the Western gaming media. Also, I did not speak at last years presentation, and I am not planning to speak at these events at the E3 show this year either. Apart from these exclusive events for visitors, we are continuing to investigate ways to deliver information about our games directly to our home audience around the time of E3. We will share more information about them once they have officially been decided.

During the E3 period, we will utilize our direct communication tools, such as Nintendo Direct, to deliver information to our Japanese audience, including those who are at this financial briefing, mainly focusing on the software that we are going to launch in Japan, and we will take the same approach outside Japan for the overseas fans as well.

I wasn't worried for Nintendo until I read this. Why would they not do a press event at E3? It can't cost them that much money to do an event. Maybe they might try to upstage E3 with some crazy Nintendo Direct. But this is huge news. There really isn't a way to spin this in a positive way. Good luck Nintendo fanboys.

I made it through all the words. It looks like Nintendo is banking on the majority of gamers not paying attention to E3. I can speak from experience on this one. I take the week off of work usually and when asked what i "did on my vacation" I end up explaining what E3 is and what games/systems are coming out in the near future. Maybe they are on to something. Maybe they are just throwing In the towel. It sounds like a bad idea to me but who knows? It seems as if I am in the demographic they aren't worried about.

People don't get it. In the States at least E3 is a big deal. It is on Spike TV and they dedicate 3 full days of at least 8 hours of coverage and interviews. Nintendo Direct? How many people actually know what that is? 5% of all gamers?
Even if they thing they will get blown out my the new hardware, 3rd party devs constantly saying "We won't nothing to do with it." or they have no real gameplay to show of the games they have announced, they have to be there. They have to show something. Because all of the Nintendo Direct news? That has only been shown on game websites. Not CNN, not, posters at Walmart, not signs at Gamestop.
This is a big screw up. I honestly think Nintendo realizes they now have a niche machine on their hands and they simply are not gonna bother hyping it when they can't compete. I bet it will get minimal support for a few years and Nintendo releases something else.

timbers_WSU

They will have conferences like the Fall conference at E3 to reveal info related to the WiiU and 3DS.

I just recognized something. Maybe this is their grand plan. They want to rely more on word of mouth from other people to increase the sales of the WiiU. If this plan works WiiU hardware sales may skyrocket. Ninty does not have to deal with the weird E3 conferences if they do this.

The Wii was popular long before it came out on the market, E3 really help push the system.  Nintendo clearly states, "we are not launching a console," so they do not want a full fledged E3.  Stupid move imo.

Ninty has tried to advertise the console and to reveal more info about the console and the games that will release on it and these have failed to generate more demand for the console. The WiiU is a really confusing product and is somewhat hard to advertise. The best way ninty can increase consumer demand for the console is show public/private demos for the game instead of wasting an hour or two showing games. They have nintendo direct to show games now and lots of people watch it.

They have nothing to show, except games they have already announced/shown. Now in playable state.

Nohtnym

As funny and sad as that would be, its highly implausible.  This isn't Square Enix we're talking about.  Nintendo is usually on top of their development schedules and there is no way all their internal and 2nd party studios have just been twiddling their thumbs.

Is E3 really that big of show these days? No offense to the average Geek but to the average Joe, E3 probably doesn't exist and why on Earth would you put all your eggs in one basket? E3 is out of date by the way its presented in this day and age of internet media. If i remember right doesn't MS turn up for the TGS, if so whats different between not turning up altogether and turning up ? More presentations like Nintendo Direct please. Saying that ND has been lousy for WiiU but not 3DS. Yes Bayonetta 2 and W101 was kinda cool but not information on both said titles One which should of been released by now aswell.

I've been reading posts for months from WiiU fanboys that have been saying Nintendo is saving everything for E3-- Metroid, Mario, Destiny, and GTA. Now they're posting that E3 isn't that important. They are living on another planet. I smell failure. Nintendo is going to E3 without a first person Metroid or a 3D Mario. It's going to be the same crap we've seen for 2 years that still hasn't come out, but we've already played seven times like Mario Kart and Super Smash.

I would have liked all the games condensed in one show that would have been the best Nintendo related 1 hour video ever, but whatever they are doing instead will showcase the same content so in that sense I'm not disappointed.

Plus the former is unlikely nowadays with Nintendo's "5 key titles" bullshit, we want an epic show with 20 games even though I undestand from a sales perspective people will ignore the other 15 and focus on the 5 big ones.

We have to accept being fed small portions at a time over the course of a year instead of one grand meal.

They will be there in some way.

There E3 confererences are usually very very underwhelming anyway.

Nintendo directs are extremely corny but better.

I need to know what does "large-scale presentation" mean to them. But one thing is sure, all eyes in the gaming industry: gamers, media, investors, distributors, partners, competition and so on will be on E3. All those.

Time will tell if this was a good decision or not, they may very well want to focus on their own thing(direct)but we all know that it doesn´t have anywhere near the pull or relevance of E3 for the industry and the general gaming audiences aside from their core fanbase, and while this wouldn´t be a huge deal for many other companies, for a major harware manufacturer to pull out of the conferences may do them more harm than good.

They probably realised that on this specific E3 they would be completely trucidated by sony and microsoft regardless of what they had to show, won´t be surprised if they come back next year, wich they probably will tbh.

The one we refer to as press conference, the main event. The same information/content will reach us but trough other means.

How silly. Nintendo need to capture the core gamer and e3 is the perfect place, nobody except fanboys will watch their crappy mini meetings.BigBoss255
Do I really need to reiterate why that's a problem just by that one example?

At least journalists re-cap their Nintendo Directs.

Basically this sends a message to the industry that Nintendo can't keep pace with the competition anymore, which is what people have long been saying about them.

They have nothing to show

Whether true or not; that is the optic. This is Nintendo conceding defeat and trying to sneak by E3 without getting chased with torches because they know they are going to disappoint. There are only two things I can take away from this-- either Nintendo has nothing interesting for WiiU and it will spell the demise of the system or Nintendo is putting a bullet in the platform. Either way, the WiiU is dead.

Early wiiU demise all but confirmed at this point. The Nintendo drones have been spamming every negative wiiu topic today, so damage control is under way. Unless the project is nearly ready for release, they will soon be cancelled. joehult
Oh yeah, because the anti-Nintendo side of things has been any better.

They have nothing to show lolol. Not being at E3 means even less people will be interested in Wii U. At least they are honest... whats the point of going to E3 when Sony will be there with the way stronger PS4 showing off more of KZ Shadow Fall, Naughty Dogs next gen game, and a ton of other REAL next gen games.

RIP nintendo, stay with 3DS

They have already released their console and received little to no hype from the world's media... Since E3 is pretty much marketing and networking this is just a bad move for Nintendo from a business point of view because that is exactly what Nintendo needs.

Nintendo directs aren't viewed outside of the gaming media and that's what E3 is there for, but like most of Nintendo's recent marketing decisions I'm not too surprised they have made another DERP choice. The next Wii U Nintendo Direct NEEDS to be BIG otherwise it will alienate their fanbase. If all they show is a Mario and the remade Zelda tittle then no wonder they chose to drop out of a presentation.

At Nintendo the inmates are running the asylum. How anyone can spin this as good news is beyond me.

EDIT

The only positive spin is they save money. But you have to spend money to make money. If you don't spend on advertising you wont' sell any hardware or software. SMH Iwata has always been the worst of them and now he runs the show. Good grief.

It makes for some entertaining reading at least.  Its amazing how quickly things can escalate around here.  The exaggeration is already beyond reason and this is only the start.

And what will it all mean in the end?  Not shit.  E3 doesn't carry the mainstream impact that some people here apparently seem to think.

But honestly, if Sony or MS had made this move they would be getting this very same doom thread. Â
