Did the cube launch at the same time as the PS2, no it didn't and that crippled it right away. By the time the Cube launched it was going up against an established PS2 with an already formidabble library as well as the fact that the PS2 rode in on the PS1's success. That will also cripple the Vita as well, you cannot give your competition up to a year head start and hope to catch up (The PS3 and Wii doing it are the exceptions and not the rule). When has a Nintendo console launched first and lost saleswise to it's competition.

Did the Wii launch at the same time at the 360? No it didn't and it made no difference.
Exceptions or not, I don't think a one year difference makes any major impact in the sales. Botched launches do though.
The 360 had unreliable consoles and few good games, the PS3 had a horrendous price tag...The Wii won because it had a successful launch and was UNIQUE.
Besides, Nintendo was so successful with the Wii and DS largely because of the casual market. Why should the casual market come to Nintendo when smartphones outclass the 3DS?
Touchscreen? Phones have that.
Good graphics? Phones have it.
3D? Phones are getting it but it's an unpopular gimmick.
Games? Thousands of them on the App Store. Very few 3rd-party ones on the 3DS due to lack of developer confidence in the system.
Cheap? The iPhone 4 is $150. The 3DS is $250. Which is the better deal?

I don't think established Nintendo franchises are THAT influential to draw significant numbers to the system.
(Maybe 20 million casual, 20 million hardcore lifetime sales or less)
What sold the Wii and the DS was their uniqueness.
